Abstract

Complexes of formula [(C5H5)2TiAlR2]2 in which C5H5 is cyclopentadienyl and R is an alkyl group, preferably C1-C4 alkyl and particularly ethyl, may be used by themselves as catalysts in the low pressure polymerization of ethylene, and may be used in the presence of a transition metal halide in the polymerization of a -olefins, especially ethylene, propylene, and of oxygen containing vinylidene monomers such as alkyl methacrylates. The polymers so produced are highly isotactic, e.g. more than 95%. The complexes may be used in the presence of ethers and tertiary amines (towards which compounds they are stable). Specification 875,078 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises crystallisable complexes of formula [(C5H5)2TiAlR2]2 in which C5H5 is a cyclopentadienyl group and R is an alkyl group. The compound in which R is ethyl is specifically claimed. They may be prepared by reacting a bis-cyclo-pentadienyl titanium monohalide with excess trialkyl aluminium in a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature between 50 DEG and 120 DEG C, and crystallising the product. The complexes may be used in the presence of transition metal halides in the polymerisation of a -olefins, and by themselves in the low-pressure polymerization of ethylene.
