Abstract
A method of preparing a 12a-deoxytetracycline of the general formula and salts thereof by the addition of acids: ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 is hydrogen or chloro, R2 is hydrogen or methyl and R3 is hydrogen or hydroxyl, with the proviso that at least one of the substituents represented by R1, R2 and R3 is hydrogen, characterized in that the corresponding antibiotic of tetracycline having a 12a-kidroxyl substituent is contacted with metallic zinc in an aqueous alkaline solution in order to result in the reduction of the 12a-hydroxyl substituent and, if desired, the 12a-deoxytetracycline is reacted with an acid, forming the salt by the addition of acid.
