Abstract
A friction clutch is controlled by a control unit 8 which supplies current to an electromagnetic actuating device 1 so as to engage/disengage a friction clutch. The device 1 comprises a solenoid coil 5 and a magnetic element 3 that is displaced axially by current flow, thereby acting on the clutch via withdrawal bearing 11. Depending upon the type of element 3 used, eg a proportional magnet, either the withdrawal force or the withdrawal travel is controlled by control unit 8 altering the current. If a time interval is exceeded a time switch 23 activates a holding element (21, fig 2) which relieves the load on the actuating device when the clutch is disengaged. A sensor 31 and signal processor 33 may be included in the circuitry, these provide the control unit 8 with data so that it can compensate for wear and accurately control the clutch.
