Abstract
Improvements in the procedure for obtaining and collecting silicon nitrite in powder form. The synthesis of silicon nitrite (Si3B4) in powder form is effected by means of CVD by the reaction between ammonia and a silicon precursor compound in a quartz tubular reactor at temperatures lower than 1,200degreeC. The reactor can contain an inert porous material which acts as a collector of the Si3N4 powder produced. Alternatively the reactor can function as fixed or fluidized bed to collect the powder. The collector or the particles of the bed can be subjected to combustion in an oxidizing atmosphere in order to obtain the (amorphous) Si3N4 powder and can later be burned in order to obtain -Si3N4. The inoculation of -Si3N4 particles into the collector or into the bed allows silicon nitrite powder with an -Si3N4 structure to be directly obtained. The Si3N4 can be used to obtain advanced ceramic materials.
