Die Befeuchtungsvorrichtung 5 kann beispielsweise derart wirken, daß das Stickstoffgas über eine Wasseroberfläche geleitet wird und auf diese Weise Feuchtigkeit aufnimmt. Durch eine anschließende Kühlung,des feuchten Schutzgases mit Hilfe einer Kühlvorrichtung 6 wird dann dessen Feuchtigkeit und Temperatur eingestellt und geregelt, dabei wird die Luftfeuchtigkeit auf einen vorgegebenen Wert gebracht, beispielsweise 35 bis 65%. Damit kann der Überdruck im Innenraum 7 der Vitrine beispielsweise nach dem Öffnen und Schließen der Vitrine für einen vorgegebenen Zeitraum etwas erhöht werden, um zu erreichen, daß sich der Innenraum 7 der Vitrine schneller wieder mit dem Stickstoffgas füllt, indem die eingedrungene Luft infolge der Undichtigkeiten hinaus gedrängt wird.
