Description

  • Wall attachment for furniture, characterized in that it comprises a set of parts which when operatively mounted provide a flat assembly of thickness conveniently less than the width of a mortise (6) made vertically in the rear edge of the side panels (5) of a piece of furniture, and which with its ogival lever (4) forms a disc (19) which through rotary adjustment is housed in a housing (27) having a resilient perimeter formed in a resilient plate (26) fitted on the hook (2) in such a way that it is housed between the body of the hook (2) and the wall of the said mortise (6) opposite that in which the said base (1) is located, this disc (19) having peripheral teeth (28) matching four toothed segments (29) formed in the housing (27).
  • SCOPE OF THE INVENTION
  • This invention relates to a fitting for the attachment of furniture to a wall having the capability for adjustment in height, frontal inclination and of course laterally.
  • PRIOR ART
  • A great variety of devices for the attachment of furniture to walls are known in the field to which this invention relates.
  • Basic requirements for these devices are that they should be hidden from view but that they should nevertheless be reasonably accessible for making those adjustments through which the piece of furniture can be suitably aligned as part of a set of furniture or with respect to its surroundings, once the piece of furniture has been positioned in its installed location.
  • The need to associate these conditions with the provision of mechanisms giving rise to the adjustments indicated and with the limitations on location imposed by the design of the furniture itself and its relationship to other pieces of furniture abutting it which have to be adjusted in the same way all have the effect that known arrangements are of complex construction and complex to install, and have to be accessed through openings made in the back of the furniture so that adjustments can be carried out when the pieces of furniture are alongside each other. In such circumstances, for the purposes of hiding from view and installation it is necessary to take advantage of the fact that the back of the furniture is recessed, creating a space between it and the wall in which it is necessary to work in order to fit the attachment and support it on the sides and top of the piece of furniture (the back being generally weak for this purpose) through a fitting operation which is laborious and difficult to mechanize. When the back of the furniture is flush fitted the attachment has to be fitted within the piece of furniture leaving only the hook which attaches to the wall-mounted anchorage projecting behind (through the back).
  • EXPLANATION OF THE INVENTION AND ITS ADVANTAGES
  • This being the case, this invention provides a wall attachment for furniture comprising a set of parts which when operatively fitted forms a flat assembly of a thickness which is conveniently less than the width of a mortise which is made vertically in the rear edge of the side panels of a piece of furniture having a height and depth which are requisitely greater than the corresponding heights and widths of a said set of parts comprising a base, a hook, a spiral rotary lever for vertical adjustment, or a spiral lever and an ogival rotatory lever for frontal adjustment, or an ogival lever, in which the base lies against one side of the mortise and is screwed to the bottom thereof, the hook has a tip which is capable of engaging a hook support anchored to the wall to which the piece of furniture is attached, the spiral lever has its spiral perimeter supported on a lateral projection of the hook and rotates supported against the upper extremity of a vertical opening formed in the base, in which both the spiral lever itself and the lateral projection can be slidably adjusted, the ogival lever rotating and being supported on a lower bearing which is formed in the base and is provided with sliding rotary adjustment between the vertical edges of a groove which is formed in the said hook, while this ogival lever forms a disc which through rotary adjustment is housed in a resilient peripheral housing formed in a resilient plate which is installed in the hook in such a way that it is enclosed between the body of the hook and the wall of the said mortise opposite the same against which the said base abuts, the said disc having a toothed perimeter which matches four toothed segments formed in the said housing with radial members which are placed between each of the adjacent toothed segments, the spiral and ogival levers of which being each provided with first recesses for the application of a rotary activating tool, which are accessible through openings in the wall of the mortise corresponding to the interior of the piece of furniture.
  • This proposed arrangement has the virtue that it is installed embedded within the thickness of the side panels of the piece of furniture, thus at the same time solving many problems such as: hiding it perfectly from view, in which only the tip of the hook projects by the amount strictly necessary for attachment to the hook support anchored to the wall, with the result that, once the piece of furniture is mounted on the wall, all of it is wholly hidden from view; simple installation capable of simple mechanization through screwing to the base of the mortise; accessible and sensitive manoeuvrability through simple holes made in the inner wall of the mortise, providing the possibility of convenient independent adjustment of pieces of furniture abutting each other laterally; release of space within the piece of furniture for its essential purpose; application to pieces of furniture with both a flush or recessed back; applicability to both the right- or left-hand side panels of the piece of furniture, given that the said spiral lever and ogival lever are each provided with second recesses for the application of a rotary activating tool.
  • These and other particulars of the invention are detailed in the appended graphical illustration.

    DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • A preferred embodiment of the wall attachment according to the invention is described in the appended drawings in relation to the drawings and references listed above.
  • As shown in Figure 1, this attachment is embedded in the thickness of the side panel (5) of the piece of furniture and comprises a set of pieces which when operatively fitted offer a flat assembly of a thickness which is conveniently less than the width of a mortise (6) made vertically in the rear edges of the side panels (5) of a piece of furniture having a height and depth which are duly greater than the corresponding heights and widths of said set of parts comprising a base (1), a hook (2), a rotatory spiral lever for vertical adjustment, or a spiral lever (3) and an ogival rotatory lever for frontal adjustment, or ogival lever (4), in which the said base (1) abuts one side of the mortise (6) and is screwed to the base thereof, the said hook (2) has a tip (7) which can be engaged by a hook support (8) attached to the wall (9) to which the furniture is attached, the said spiral lever (3) has its spiral perimeter bearing against a lateral projection (10) of the said hook (2) and rotating supported against the upper extremity of a vertical space (11) formed in the said base (1) and which is slidably adjusted at the appropriate time, the said ogival lever (4) rotating supported on a lower bearing (12) formed in the said base (1) and provided with rotary and sliding adjustment between the vertical sides (14) of a groove (13) formed in the said hook (2), while the said ogival lever (4) forms a disc (19) which is housed with rotary adjustment within a housing (27) having a resilient perimeter which is formed in a resilient plate (26) fitted in the hook (2) in such a way that it is enclosed between the body of the hook (2) and the wall of the said mortise (6) opposite thereto against which the said base (1) abuts, the said disc (19) having a toothed perimeter (28) matching four toothed segments (29) formed in the said housing (27) with radial members (30) fitted between each of the two adjacent toothed segments (29), these spiral (3) and ogival (4) levers being each provided with first recesses (15, 16) for the application of a rotary activating tool (22) which can be accessed through openings (23) in the wall of the said mortise (6) on the interior of the piece of furniture.
  • Operative fitting of the attachment in the mortise (6) only requires the securing screws (24) to be screwed to the bottom of the said mortise (6), as a result of which the tip (7) of the hook (2) is located at a specific point to facilitate attachment to the hook support (8) anchored to the wall (9) and with respect to which the lateral position of the piece of furniture may be adjusted.
  • Once this has been fitted, the first recesses (15, 16) respectively of spiral (3) and ogival (4) levers are opposite the holes (23) provided for access and activation by the tip of rotary activating tool (22); obviously individual openings (23) may be converted into a single window covering the two. At this point it is worthwhile pointing out that one feature of the invention lies in the fact that these spiral (3) and ogival (4) levers are each provided with second recesses (20, 21) for the application of a rotary activating tool (22); this means that the attachment may be fitted to either of the left- or right-hand side panels (5) of the piece of furniture, with the sole difference that in one case activation by the tool (22) takes place on the said first recesses (15, 16) or the second recesses (20, 21).
  • Consideration of this assembly (Figures 1 and 2) together with the constituent details of the individual parts (Figures 3 to 13) will provide a rapid understanding of an operation which is in any event quite simple.
  • In order to adjust for height, it is necessary to rotate spiral lever (3) (in an anticlockwise direction in Figure 2) from the position in that Figure 2, and the piece of furniture will rise progressively until this spiral lever (3) bears against lateral projection (10) of hook (2) and against the upper extremity of the space (11) in base (1), a movement which continues until the time when the tip (25) of spiral lever (3) abuts against lateral projection (10).
  • The fact that the said spiral lever (3) has its active edge provided with parallel knurling (18) which in order to keep the adjusted position firm is matched by a rib (34) cut into the said lateral projection (10) of base (1) of the attachment and on the other hand the fact that this spiral lever (3) forms a prominence (Figures 8 and 9) which projects laterally against the body of the said base (1), a prominence which exerts an extra transverse pressure on the body of the spiral lever (3), helps to maintain the adjusted position. Furthermore, adjustment of spiral lever (3) in base (1) prevents oscillations from occurring in its plane, assisted to some extent by the fact that its flat active body is enclosed with rotary adjustment between the bodies of base (1) and hook (2).
  • In order to adjust the frontal inclination of the piece of furniture, it is sufficient to rotate ogival lever (4) so that one or the other of its symmetrical edges (depending upon which of the side panels of the piece of furniture is involved) presses against the corresponding vertical side (14) of groove (13) of hook (2) and through reaction, by rotating on bearing (12) of base (1), gives rise to tipping of hook (2) and this tipping has the result that the piece of furniture is adjusted frontally. In this rotary manoeuvre of ogival lever (4) a resilient offset in the form of a ratchet is produced between the toothed periphery (28) of disc (19) and the toothed segments (29) of resilient plate (26), this being made possible through the resilient nature of resilient plate (26) itself and the existence of the radial members (30) placed between these toothed segments (29); once the adjustment action is complete, the resilient plate recovers its initial condition and gives rise to coupling between toothed periphery (28) and toothed segments (29), which, also assisted by the inherent weight of the attached piece of furniture, firmly secures the point of adjustment established and provides fine adjustment within the possible range of adjustment.
  • Stability against tipping in its plane of rotation is in this case ensured through adjustment of ogival lever (4) in lower bearing (12) of base (1), and this is helped to some extent through the existence of its disc (19) which is enclosed within the body of said hook (2) and the wall of said mortise (6) opposite thereto against which said base (1) abuts.
