Definitions
- the present invention relates to an external bone- setting device for reducing bone fractures.
- an external bone-setting device comprising two arms which are fitted to respective portions of a fractured bone; and connecting means for connecting the two arms to each other.
- the connecting means comprise normally spherical joint means for connecting and selectively controlling the position of the two arms with respect to each other, to enable the surgeon to position the two fractured bone portions correctly; and fastening means for fastening the joint means.
- the connecting means normally being made of metal and located at the fracture when the device is applied to the patient, known devices of the above type have various drawbacks, foremost of which is the non-radiolucent nature of the connecting means, which prevents correct operative and postoperative x-raying to determine the correct position of the fractured bone portions with respect to each other.
- an external bone-setting device for reducing a bone fracture, the device comprising two arms which are fitted to respective fractured bone portions; and connecting means for connecting said arms and selectively controlling the position of the arms with respect to each other,- characterized in that said connecting means are made at least partly of radiolucent material .
- Figure 1 shows a view in perspective of a preferred embodiment of the bone-setting device according to the present invention,-
- Figure 2 shows a side view, with parts in section and parts removed for clarity, of the Figure 1 device
- Figure 3 shows a side view, with parts in section and parts removed for clarity, of a variation of the Figure 1 device .
- Number 1 in Figures 1 and 2 indicates as a whole an external bone-setting device for reducing bone fractures, and which comprises two arms 2, 3 which are fitted to respective portions of a fractured bone; and a coupling 4 for connecting arms 2, 3 to each other and selectively controlling the position of arms 2, 3 with respect to each other.
- Arms 2, 3 are made of a composite material comprising a resinous matrix, and a number of reinforcing fibers dispersed in the resinous matrix and preferably of glass, carbon or Kevlar.
- Arm 2 comprises a tubular body 5 having a longitudinal axis 6 and a closed, substantially spherical end 7 facing arm 3 ; and arm 3 comprises a tubular body 8 having a longitudinal axis 9 and an open end 10, which faces arm 2 and is shaped to define a substantially spherical seat 11 for receiving end 7.
- Ends 7 and 10 define a spherical joint 12, in turn defining part of coupling 4, which also comprises two members 13, 14 for fastening joint 12 and made of the aforementioned composite material, or a technopolymer material selected from the group comprising polyamides (PA) , polycarbonate (PC) , acrylic resins (PMMA) , acetal resins (POM) , cellulosic resins (CA, CAB, CAP, CN) , polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) , or a superpolymer material selected from the group comprising polyetherterketone (PEEK) , polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) , polyamide-imide (PAI) , polyimide (PI) , polybenzimidazole (PBI) , polysulfone (PSU) , polyetherimide (PEI) .
- PA polyamides
- PC polycarbonate
- PMMA acrylic resins
- POM acetal resins
- ends 7, 10 defining joint 12 are made separately from respective bodies 5, 8, and are fixed to respective bodies 5, 8 preferably, though not necessarily, by gluing; in which case, bodies 5, 8 may be made of metal .
- Member 13 comprises a tubular body 15, which is substantially coaxial with axis 9, is fitted in rotary and axially- ⁇ liding manner to body 5, and is defined internally by a surface 16 comprising a threaded portion 17, and a spherical-sector-shaped portion 18 having a radius of curvature substantially equal to that of end 7.
- Member 14 comprises a tubular body 19, which is substantially coaxial with axis 9, is fitted in rotary and axially-sliding manner to body 8, is defined externally by a cylindrical, at least partly threaded surface 20, and is defined axially, at one end, by a spherical -sector-shaped surface 21 having a radius of curvature substantially equal to that of end 10.
- member 14 is screwed inside member 13 so that portion 18 and surface 21 contact respective ends 7 and 10 to fasten ends 7 and 10 together, and therefore spherical joint 12.
- Arm 3 is a telescopic arm also comprising a sleeve 22, which surrounds body 8, coaxially with axis 9, is fitted in sliding and angularly-fixed manner to body 8 by means of a prismatic coupling 23, and is moved linearly along axis 9 and with respect to body 8 by an actuating device 24.
- the free end of sleeve 22 is fitted with a bush 25, which is coaxial with axis 9 and has an inner annular flange 26 extending radially inwards from the inner surface of bush 25.
- Device 24 comprises a screw 27, which extends through bush 25, coaxially with axis 9, to engage body 8, has an outer annular flange 28 extending radially outwards from the outer surface of screw 27, and is fitted in rotary and axially-fixed manner to sleeve 22 by means of flange 28, which is gripped axially between flange 26 and a ring nut 29 screwed inside bush 25.
- Arms 2, 3 are fixed to respective portions of the fractured bone (not shown) by respective known fastening devices 30, each comprising a respective slide 31, which is coaxial with relative axis 6, 9 , is fitted in rotary and axially-sliding manner to relative body 5 or sleeve 22, and is fastened to relative body 5 or sleeve 22 by a screw 32 extending crosswise to relative axis 6, 9.
- device 24 therefore provides for selectively controlling the position of sleeve 22 with respect to body 5, i.e. the position of the two devices 30 with respect to each other.
- Each device 30 also comprises a gripping member 33, a first jaw 34 of which is fitted in known manner to relative slide 31 to rotate, with respect to relative slide 31, about two axes (not shown) crosswise to each other, and a second jaw 35 of which cooperates with jaw 34 to grip two rods 36 having respective threaded ends for engaging the relative portion of the fractured bone (not shown) .
- Figure 3 is similar to Figure 2, and shows an external bone-setting device 37 comprising a tubular connecting rod 38 having two ends 39, each of which is shaped to define a respective substantially spherical seat 40 for receiving a substantially spherical end 41 of a relative arm 42.
- an external bone-setting device 37 comprising a tubular connecting rod 38 having two ends 39, each of which is shaped to define a respective substantially spherical seat 40 for receiving a substantially spherical end 41 of a relative arm 42.
- connecting rod 38 defines a double spherical joint 43, which forms part of a coupling 44 for connecting arms 42 to each other, and also comprising two fastening members 45 similar to member 13 and which screw onto connecting rod 38 to fasten joint 43.
- connecting rod 38 can be made of one of said technopolymer materials, or one of said superpolymer materials, and can be reinforced with an inner core (not shown) made of carbon; ends 41 are made of said composite material; and the two members 45 can be made of said composite material, or one of said technopolymer materials, or one of said superpolymer materials.
