Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an external bone- setting device for reducing bone fractures.
  • an external bone-setting device comprising two arms which are fitted to respective portions of a fractured bone; and connecting means for connecting the two arms to each other.
  • the connecting means comprise normally spherical joint means for connecting and selectively controlling the position of the two arms with respect to each other, to enable the surgeon to position the two fractured bone portions correctly; and fastening means for fastening the joint means.
  • the connecting means normally being made of metal and located at the fracture when the device is applied to the patient, known devices of the above type have various drawbacks, foremost of which is the non-radiolucent nature of the connecting means, which prevents correct operative and postoperative x-raying to determine the correct position of the fractured bone portions with respect to each other.
  • an external bone-setting device for reducing a bone fracture, the device comprising two arms which are fitted to respective fractured bone portions; and connecting means for connecting said arms and selectively controlling the position of the arms with respect to each other,- characterized in that said connecting means are made at least partly of radiolucent material .
  • Figure 1 shows a view in perspective of a preferred embodiment of the bone-setting device according to the present invention,-
  • Figure 2 shows a side view, with parts in section and parts removed for clarity, of the Figure 1 device
  • Figure 3 shows a side view, with parts in section and parts removed for clarity, of a variation of the Figure 1 device .
  • Number 1 in Figures 1 and 2 indicates as a whole an external bone-setting device for reducing bone fractures, and which comprises two arms 2, 3 which are fitted to respective portions of a fractured bone; and a coupling 4 for connecting arms 2, 3 to each other and selectively controlling the position of arms 2, 3 with respect to each other.
  • Arms 2, 3 are made of a composite material comprising a resinous matrix, and a number of reinforcing fibers dispersed in the resinous matrix and preferably of glass, carbon or Kevlar.
  • Arm 2 comprises a tubular body 5 having a longitudinal axis 6 and a closed, substantially spherical end 7 facing arm 3 ; and arm 3 comprises a tubular body 8 having a longitudinal axis 9 and an open end 10, which faces arm 2 and is shaped to define a substantially spherical seat 11 for receiving end 7.
  • Ends 7 and 10 define a spherical joint 12, in turn defining part of coupling 4, which also comprises two members 13, 14 for fastening joint 12 and made of the aforementioned composite material, or a technopolymer material selected from the group comprising polyamides (PA) , polycarbonate (PC) , acrylic resins (PMMA) , acetal resins (POM) , cellulosic resins (CA, CAB, CAP, CN) , polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) , or a superpolymer material selected from the group comprising polyetherterketone (PEEK) , polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) , polyamide-imide (PAI) , polyimide (PI) , polybenzimidazole (PBI) , polysulfone (PSU) , polyetherimide (PEI) .
