Abstract

Use of an aqueous emulsion which contains a soap and an organic solvent for hardened epoxy resins, for removing epoxy resin joint filling compounds from panels or tiles.

Description

In wet rooms and in rooms in which chemical agents are used and in which tiles are laid, it is necessary that the joints of these tiles are sealed with epoxy resin against moisture and against chemical agents. Epoxy resin has the property of reacting very quickly. For this reason, one must work very carefully on the one hand, i.e. care must be taken to ensure that the epoxy grout only reaches the joint to be processed and not the tiles immediately adjacent to it. If the grout is still on the tile, it must be removed immediately, because otherwise it can no longer be removed or only with great effort. But even if the processor responds immediately, removal is only possible with great difficulty.

So far, the excess material has been removed from the tile surface by pulling it diagonally with the elastic joint filler or the trowel and the remaining joint material has been emulsified on the surface with as little water as possible. It was absolutely necessary to clean the tile surfaces again with a clean, soft sponge. In the case of unglazed tiles and those with matt glazes in particular, they must be washed off without residue before curing.

In practice, turpentine has also been used to remove the last residues of the epoxy grout.

But here, too, a veil often remains that cannot be removed or can only be removed with difficulty. Rubbing with spirit to remove the veil from glazed surfaces is also recommended.

Diese organischen Lösungsmittel sind jedoch aus Umweltschutzgründen unerwünscht und man ist bei der Entwicklung von Reinigungsmittel bestrebt, ihren Anteil stark zu reduzieren oder ganz auf sie zu verzichten.CH-PS 670 832 describes an organic, chlorohydrocarbon-free stripping, solvent and paint remover which is composed of a resin solvent from the group of the esters, a swelling agent from the group of oxygen heterocycles, a solvent for surfactants and thickeners, one or more surfactants from the group of alkylbenzenesulfonates and one or more thickeners from the group of alkylhydroxyalkylcelluloses, the agent containing one or more aprotic or non-aprotic polar solubilizers. However, these organic solvents are undesirable for reasons of environmental protection and efforts are being made in the development of cleaning agents to greatly reduce their proportion or to dispense with them entirely.

This detergent composition is suitable for removing cellulose lacquer layers, paints, enamel lacquers, glazes, printing inks and similar materials from the skin without affecting them too much when the agent is used. In order to achieve a suitable cleaning effect, the composition must additionally contain an abrasive. Such an abrasive-containing detergent composition can only be used for purposes in which the abrasive effect of the abrasive cannot cause any damage to the surface to be cleaned.

The invention has for its object to facilitate the cleaning of smeared with epoxy resin tiles.

This object is achieved according to the invention by the use of an aqueous emulsion which contains a soap and a suitable organic solvent for hardened epoxy resins, the proportion of the soap being 10 to 30% by weight, based on the organic solvent.

Among the organic solvents, esters of lower fatty acids with lower alcohols are preferred. Butyl acetate proved to be particularly suitable.

Soaps suitable for the purposes of the invention are the sodium or potassium salts of saturated and unsaturated higher fatty acids, resin acids, rosin and naphthenic acids, which are commercially available as solid or semi-solid mixtures. The potassium salts of higher fatty acids, the so-called soft soaps or potassium soaps, have proven to be particularly suitable. Their proportion is significantly higher than is necessary only for the emulsification of the organic solvent and is about 10 to 30%, in particular 15 to 25% by weight of the amount of the organic solvent.

It has proven expedient to first distribute the soap evenly in the solvent, ie to dissolve it partially or completely, and then to dissolve it Add cold water to form the desired emulsion. The amount of water is usually 4 to 6 times the amount of the organic solvent.

A mixture which has been found to be very suitable for removing epoxy resins from plates or tiles has been obtained by diluting a mixture of 100 liters of butyl acetate and 20 kg of soft soap with 500 liters of cold water.

The product thus produced can be filled into canisters and is ready for use in this form.

With the agents according to the invention, epoxy resins can be removed easily and effectively without any residues and thus free of fog. It can also be used to remove spots that were discovered afterwards. This removal of any residues of epoxy grout is achieved in a much shorter time than with the previously known methods. The time saved compared to the conventional way of working is more than 50%.
