Definitions
- fabric softeners have so far generally been used in the form of dilute, about 2 to 10% aqueous solutions.
- these diluted solutions have several disadvantages. You can e.g. should not be stored cold, because after freezing and thawing, they assume a gel consistency and can no longer be brought into homogeneous solution. Another disadvantage is the high excess water content of these solutions.
- the invention thus relates to liquid fabric softeners consisting of an aqueous solution or dispersion of compounds of the formula 1 in which R 1 is methyl-branched alkyl or alkenyl each having 12-30, preferably 14 to 18, carbon atoms, R 2 C 1 -C 4 -alkyl and A is an anion and optionally further auxiliaries.
- the quaternary ammonium compounds of the above formula are obtained by conventional methods starting from methyl-branched fatty acids. From these acids, the amide and therefrom the nitrile are produced with ammonia, which is converted into the di-alkylamine by hydrogenation. This di-alkylamine is then alkylated and quaternized by known methods.
- the methyl-branched alkyl or alkenyl radicals are isomer mixtures with different positions of the methyl group.
- Anion A is preferably a chloride, methosulfate, ethosulfate, methophosphate or ethophosphate ion. Methyl is preferred as R 2 .
- these cationic softening compounds are expediently used in the form of their concentrated solutions in lower alcohols, preferably isopropanol or in a mixture of these alcohols with water.
- the fabric softening agents according to the invention contain a certain amount of such lower alcohols (approx. 5-30% by weight).
- Another constituent of the fabric softener according to the invention can be customary nonionic dispersants or emulsifiers based on oxalkylates, which contribute to the fact that the fabric softener is readily dispersible in cold water.
- Suitable nonionic dispersants are e.g. Reaction products of about 2-12 moles of ethylene oxide each with an alkylphenol such as e.g.
- Xylenol but also with an alkylphenol with a long alkyl radical of 8-10 C atoms or with a fatty alcohol with 8 to 15 C atoms, in particular reaction products of about 5 to 8 moles of EO with 1 mole of alkylphenol or 1 mole of an 8 to 15 C-containing fatty alcohol or a mixture of such fatty alcohols.
- the amount of these nonionic compounds is 3 to 10 wt .-% in weakly concentrated fabric softeners with a content of the compounds of formula 1 of .ca. 10 to 30% by weight.
- Highly concentrated fabric softeners with a content of the compounds of formula 1 of approximately 30 to 70% by weight preferably contain 5 to 20% by weight of the nonionic dispersant. With the diluted, commercially available fabric softeners, it is not necessary to add such dispersants.
- Such more highly concentrated fabric softeners also preferably contain 5 to 30% by weight of an ethylene glycol, prepylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and the C 1 -C 4 -alkyl ethers of these compounds. It goes without saying that only compounds of this product group that are liquid are suitable. These compounds have a solubilizing effect in the fabric softeners according to the invention.
- the fabric softener according to the invention can be produced by simply mixing the components or their concentrated solutions. If necessary, perfume, dye, optical brighteners or other auxiliaries can also be added. To set the desired final concentration, it may be diluted with the necessary amount of water. The amounts of the individual components are selected within the limits specified so that the finished composition, including any additional amounts of water, perfume and colorants, is 100% by weight.
- the amount of the fabric softener according to the invention is 80 to 150 ml, 30 to 70 ml or 10 to 20 ml for a fabric softener with a compound of formula 1 of 2 to 10% by weight. -% 10 to 30 wt .-% or 30 to 70 wt .-%.
- the fabric softeners according to the invention which have good softening properties, can be dispersed well in cold water without it. disruptive gel formation occurs. It is advantageous here that these concentrates can be fed directly into household machines with suitable metering devices. This good solubility also allows the concentrates according to the invention to be diluted shortly before they are put into the washing machine, so that the fabric softener can also be traded in concentrated form and not only as dilute aqueous solutions. This eliminates the need to transport large, ultimately superfluous amounts of water at all stages of the trade.

Abstract
Description
It is known that certain cationic quaternary ammonium compounds, when added in the final rinse of the washing machine, can be used in various types of fabrics, e.g. Cotton, wool, synthetic cotton blend, give a good grip and at the same time antistatic properties. However, there are certain difficulties in producing formulations of these fabric softening agents with a higher concentration and distributing them evenly in the cold washing liquor, because when softeners are added in the form of concentrated aqueous or alcoholic solutions, gelatinous precipitates occur which can lead to the formation of stains on the laundry . It is also difficult to dilute such a concentrate to a commercially available 2-5% formulation.
Usually a gel-like mixture is obtained which is difficult or impossible to disperse in cold water.
For this reason, fabric softeners have so far generally been used in the form of dilute, about 2 to 10% aqueous solutions. However, these diluted solutions have several disadvantages. You can e.g. should not be stored cold, because after freezing and thawing, they assume a gel consistency and can no longer be brought into homogeneous solution. Another disadvantage is the high excess water content of these solutions.
It has now been found that it is possible to produce liquid, concentrated preparations of fabric softening agents which do not have these disadvantages of the dilute solutions and which are readily distributed even in cold rinse water.
The quaternary ammonium compounds of the above formula are obtained by conventional methods starting from methyl-branched fatty acids. From these acids, the amide and therefrom the nitrile are produced with ammonia, which is converted into the di-alkylamine by hydrogenation. This di-alkylamine is then alkylated and quaternized by known methods. The methyl-branched alkyl or alkenyl radicals are isomer mixtures with different positions of the methyl group. Anion A is preferably a chloride, methosulfate, ethosulfate, methophosphate or ethophosphate ion. Methyl is preferred as R 2 .
Die erfindungsgemäßen Wäscheweichspülmittel enthalten in diesem Fall eine bestimmte Menge solcher niederen Alkohole (ca. 5 - 30 Gew.-%).When preparing the liquid fabric softener according to the invention, these cationic softening compounds are expediently used in the form of their concentrated solutions in lower alcohols, preferably isopropanol or in a mixture of these alcohols with water. In this case, the fabric softening agents according to the invention contain a certain amount of such lower alcohols (approx. 5-30% by weight).
Another constituent of the fabric softener according to the invention can be customary nonionic dispersants or emulsifiers based on oxalkylates, which contribute to the fact that the fabric softener is readily dispersible in cold water. Suitable nonionic dispersants are e.g. Reaction products of about 2-12 moles of ethylene oxide each with an alkylphenol such as e.g. Xylenol, but also with an alkylphenol with a long alkyl radical of 8-10 C atoms or with a fatty alcohol with 8 to 15 C atoms, in particular reaction products of about 5 to 8 moles of EO with 1 mole of alkylphenol or 1 mole of an 8 to 15 C-containing fatty alcohol or a mixture of such fatty alcohols. The amount of these nonionic compounds is 3 to 10 wt .-% in weakly concentrated fabric softeners with a content of the compounds of formula 1 of .ca. 10 to 30% by weight. Highly concentrated fabric softeners with a content of the compounds of formula 1 of approximately 30 to 70% by weight preferably contain 5 to 20% by weight of the nonionic dispersant. With the diluted, commercially available fabric softeners, it is not necessary to add such dispersants.
Such more highly concentrated fabric softeners also preferably contain 5 to 30% by weight of an ethylene glycol, prepylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and the C 1 -C 4 -alkyl ethers of these compounds. It goes without saying that only compounds of this product group that are liquid are suitable. These compounds have a solubilizing effect in the fabric softeners according to the invention.
The fabric softener according to the invention can be produced by simply mixing the components or their concentrated solutions.
30 bis 70 Gew.-%.The amount of the fabric softener according to the invention, based on a washing machine load of laundry (approx. 4 kg), is 80 to 150 ml, 30 to 70 ml or 10 to 20 ml for a fabric softener with a compound of formula 1 of 2 to 10% by weight. -% 10 to 30 wt .-% or 30 to 70 wt .-%.
The fabric softeners according to the invention, which have good softening properties, can be dispersed well in cold water without it. disruptive gel formation occurs.
The following examples serve to explain the invention.
3 % Primär- und Tertiär-Aminanteile.400 g of isostearylamine are mixed in a stirred flask with a thermometer and gas inlet tube with 20 g of Raney nickel and gassed with 100 l of hydrogen / hour. The reaction temperature is brought to 160 ° C. in about 30 minutes and held for 1.5 hours. After cooling to about 50 ° C., the catalyst is filtered off and diisostearylamine is obtained in practically quantitative yield. The reaction product contains 92.3% secondary components, 4.7% and 3% primary and tertiary amine components.
Nach ca. 2 Stunden Reaktionszeit wird 1 g 50 %ige NaOH nachgegeben und weitere 1,5 Stunden bei 80°C umgesetzt.126 g of diisostearylamine and 25 g of 50% NaOH are reacted together with 100 g of isopropanol in a 1 liter glass autoclave with 28 g of liquid methyl chloride analogously to 1 c. This creates a methyl chloride pressure of approx. 5 bar. After a reaction time of about 2 hours, 1 g of 50% NaOH is added and the reaction is continued at 80 ° C. for a further 1.5 hours.
After the excess methyl chloride has been let down, the pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 6-7 and the remainder of the methyl chloride is removed on the reaction evaporator. After the precipitated NaCl has been suctioned off and 8 g of water and 15 g of isopropanol have been added, approximately 150 g of 75% strength diisostearyldimethylammonium chloride in isopropanol / water (1: 2) are obtained.
