Description

An arrangement for attaching a gas chromatograph column
This invention relates to an arrangement for attaching a gas chromatograph column.
In a hitherto known apparatus the column is attached to the under side of the gas chromatograph cover. Moreover, the cover is lifted with the help of a telescopic arm. However, poor conditions for inspecting and replacing the column are drawbacks of this solution, since handling of the column has to be done from underneath the cover. There is always a possibility of breaking the column when attaching it from its lower end and moving up, and the procedure is also in other respects difficult. A further drawback of the solution is the awkward location of the necessary electrical cables and gas tubes as well as other connections, because when lifting the cover construction twenty centimeters with the telescopic arm, the cover pulls along at least the same amount of cables, which might break or fall into an improper place.
The purpose of this invention is to avoid the troublesome drawbacks in the art and achieve a simple and reliable arrangement for attaching a column, as well as an arrange¬ ment that has advantageous working conditions.
In the arrangement of the present invention the column is attached to a horizontal cover that is hinged at its edge, and the column hangs essentially downward from the cover when it is closed, and when the cover is opened, the column turns into an unobstructed space and is essentially in a horizontal position for mounting.
The invention is described more specifically in the following text by referring to the attached drawings, in which figure 1 illustrates a side view of a preferred of the invention and figure 2 illustrates the same embodiment viewed from straight above.
In the figures, number 1 indicates the chassis of the gas chromatograph itself, number 2 indicates the oven cover which is fastened with hinges 3 to the chassis. It can be clearly seen from the figures that the column 4 is fastened directly onto the cover 2. In other words the column rises with the cover when the cover is opened, whereby it also cools quickly at room temperature. The column 4 may be fastened to a frame 5 to make the installation easier.
The cover 2 may be equipped with, for example, an electrical or hydraulic closing device or other such apparatus which can slow down the closing speed of the cover while it closes freely, so that the column will not be damaged during closing. The tubes for the gases and also the electrical cables and other such things are fastened to the cover 2.
An advantage of a modification according to the invention, in addition to those mentioned above is; for example, that the column can be installed and serviced in an unobstructed space while it is in an almost horizontal position, in which case the manipulation occurs quickly and safely and the risk of breakage decreases essentially. Furthermore, it is easy to make all the connections on a cover that is hinged at its edge and there is no danger of breaking the cables or of their falling into an improper place. A self-evident advan- tage of the modification is that the oven can be made extre¬ mely small, which in turn brings about certain advantages in its handling techniques.
