Abstract
Se describe un proceso para la lixiviación de un metal de valor a partir de un material mineral que contiene hierro, donde el proceso incluye los pasos de lixiviar el material mineral en una solución de sulfato ácido de modo de formar una sal de sulfato de hierro en una solución de lixiviación; agregar dióxido de azufre a la solución de lixiviación durante y/o después de la lixiviación para regenerar ácido; y recuperar la sal de sulfato de hierro a partir de la solución de lixiviación. El metal de valor generalmente es Zn, Cu, Ti, Al, Cr, Ni, Co, Mn, Fe, Pb, Na, K, Ca, Ag, Au o un metal del grupo de platino. La solución de lixiviación también puede incluir cloruros. Se puede recuperar uno o varios metales de valor, tales como níquel y/o cobalto, con las sales de sulfato de hierro y se pueden separar luego de las sales de sulfato de hierro. Las sales de sulfato de hierro recuperadas se pueden descomponer a óxidos de hierro sin descomponer las sales de sulfato de los otros metales o mientras también se descomponen las sales de sulfato de los otros metales, aquellos otros metales recuperados a través del tratamiento posterior de la calcina de óxido de hierro. El ácido regenerado normalmente es reciclado dentro del proceso de lixiviación.
