A process for the preparation of 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxybenzofuran from ortho-methallyloxyphenol by heating, by rearrangement or the ortho-methallyloxyphenol and then cyclisation of the rearranged compound thus obtained, wherein at least the cyclisation step is carried out by heating in the presence of an effective amount of a catalyst consisting of a tin derivative. A process for the preparation of 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxybenzofuran from ortho-methallyloxyphenol by heating, by rearrangement or the ortho-methallyloxyphenol and then cyclisation of the rearranged compound thus obtained, wherein at least the cyclisation step is carried out by heating in the presence of an effective amount of a catalyst consisting of a tin derivative which is not SnCI4 .
