Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for producing a profiled wooden panel, the purpose of which is to create a decorative and covering means for different surfaces, even if these surfaces are curved or include different planes.
The invention is particularly applicable for covering and cladding furniture, walls or columns, floors, room dividers or the like. However, it can also be used for any surfaces that need to be protected or decorated.
There are various types of coverings for different surfaces that also improve the external appearance or provide protection. Most of these are used for very specific purposes and therefore their field of application is very limited.
In addition, these covers are very difficult to attach to curved surfaces or to surfaces that contain different levels.
US-A 299 382 also discloses the possibility of using wood strips or strips having a central longitudinal cut which can be cut to any desired depth, wood strips having a plurality of narrow grooves running parallel to one another and close to the edges of the strips, or wood strips having large recesses or grooves with rows of small grooves between them.
A 4 073 672 describes a method for treating a panel made of cellulose, for example. This panel is given properties similar to those of natural wood by compacting it under pressure and heat. A problem involved with this type of panel is due to the fact that it is difficult to provide this type of panel with a durable surface design by means of embossing, since the surface has a tendency to "spring back" to its original surface shape. US-A 073 672 describes how, in order to solve this problem, the panel can be fixed to a damping or backing element which, according to one embodiment, is attached to the panel by means of a bonding agent. According to US-A-4 073 672 this back element can form an integral part of the final product.
The claimed method has been introduced to achieve the aims and to avoid the inconveniences mentioned above. The method can be used to obtain a decorative cladding panel having a flexible support such as fabric, plastic, cardboard, fibres, laminated metals or the like with an appropriate thickness depending on where it is placed.
A sheet, preferably made of wood and machined to have a number of segments divided by channels in which the sheet will be thinner, is glued to this support. The repeating segments create the motif of the panel.
All segments remain connected to each other to form a single piece; however, the connections between them, defined by the aforementioned channels, allow it to be flexible without breaking. This makes it possible to attach the panel to very curved surfaces as well as to surfaces with different levels.
In the manufacture of the panels according to the invention, an adhesive is first applied to the carrier and then the wooden panel is placed on top of it. Then the whole formed by the carrier, the adhesive and the wooden layer is pressed to achieve complete bonding of the wooden layer to the carrier. When the wooden layer and the carrier are then firmly bonded together, finally the surface of the wooden layer is milled with the desired details forming the various segments and channels, so that between the segments of the motif shown there is a thinner area or channel in the wooden layer.
Due to the flexibility of the support and the arrangement of motif segments in the wood layer, the panels according to the invention have the advantage that they can be attached to any surface, even if the surface is strongly curved or has sharp changes in plane. All this leads to a very wide field of application of the wood panels without reducing their effectiveness in each specific case. On the other hand, the simplicity of the manufacturing process leads to the obtaining of high-quality panels at low prices.
For a better understanding of this description and forming a part hereof, a single figure is attached in which the subject matter of the invention is shown in an illustrative and non-limiting manner.
The figure shows a perspective view of the decorative cladding panel produced by the method of the present invention, with the thickness of the support (1) and that of the adhesive layer (2) exaggerated.
The following is a description of an example according to the invention with reference to the reference symbols used in the figure.
Thus, the decorative covering produced by the claimed method comprises a flexible fabric carrier (1) to which a wooden layer (3) is attached by means of an adhesive layer (2).
The wooden layer (3) is worked in such a way as to define a series of segments (4), the repetition of which forms a motif, divided by channels (5) in which the thickness of the layer (3) is much less.
According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the segments (4) are given a uniform cross-section, with the upper side having a convexly curved edge, but they can also have other geometric features as long as channels (5) are introduced between the segments (4) in which the thickness of the wood layer (3) is small.
This design must be such that the connections between the segments (4) are flexible without breaking easily, so that the panel has considerable flexibility when necessary. These panels can therefore be attached to surfaces with different areas or curved planes.
The manufacture of the panels involves applying the adhesive layer (2) on the carrier (1) and laying the sheet (3) on top of it before the segments (4) and channels (5) are formed therein. Then these components are pressed together to achieve a greater adhesive strength.
Once the carrier (1) is firmly connected to the layer (3), the layer (3) is milled to form the segments (4) and the channels (5).
