Um ein möglichst schattenfreies Nummernschild zu erhalten, wird erfindungsgemäß die an den belichteten Kanten in bekannter Weise abgeschrägte oder ausgekehlte Glasplatte auf der die Kennzeichen aufweisenden Rückseite aufgerauht und es werden die Lichtquellen so zu dem in gewissem Abstand von der Glasplatte befindlichen Rückstrahler angeordnet, daß sie gleichzeitig die Glasplatte und den Rückstrahler beleuchten. Das vom Rückstrahler zurückgeworfene Licht hebt die Schattenbildung der auf der Glasplatte befindlichen Zeichen auf. Hierbei ist die Aufrauhung der Rückseite der Glasplatte wichtig, weil sie das Licht des Rückstrahlers besser in die Glasplatte eindringen läßt und es nicht etwa von einer glatten Oberfläche der Glasplatte zurückgeworfen wird.
