Zur Lagerung von bewegten, insbesondere rasch bewegten Teilen im Hochvakuum, z. B. rotierenden Blenden, rotierenden Antikathoden in Röntgenröhren oder rotierenden Trommeln in Molekularluftpumpen, sind die in der Technik bekannten Lagermetalle nicht brauchbar, da diese Lagermetalle nur bei öl- oder Fettschmierung genügende Gleitfähigkeit besitzen. Eine derartige Schmierung ist aber bei Lagern, die sich im Hochvakuum befinden, nicht anwendbar. Außerdem müssen die für solche Lager verwendeten Metalle genügend hohen Schmelzpunkt aufweisen, um die bei der Herstellung der Vakuumgefäße zwecks Entgasung erforderliche starke Erhitzung (mindestens auf Rotglut) zu ermöglichen. Die in der Technik bekannten Lagermetalle für öl- oder fettlose Lager sind deshalb nicht verwendbar, weil sie meist einen Zusatz von Weißmetall, das einen zu niedrigen Schmelzpunkt hat, aufweisen.
