Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein verbessertes Verfahren zur Verwertung dieser Stoffe in Brennkraftmaschinen. Sie besteht darin, daß man heiße feste Verkokungsprodukte, insbesondere Schwelrückstände kohlenstoffhaltiger Stoffe, zusammen mit überhitztem Wasserdampf unter solchen Bedingungen der Temperatur verwendet, daß Wassergasbildung eintritt. Beispielsweise werden die Verkokungsrückstände, die bei der Verschwelung von Braunkohle erhalten wurden, durch geeignete Fördermittel unmittelbar aus dem Generator unter Luftabschluß über eine Mahlanlage, in der eine Aufbereitung zu Staub erfolgt, der Maschine, z. B. einem Dieselmotor, zugeführt. Vor dem Eintritt in die Maschine findet zweckmäßig eine Wärmezufuhr, z. B. durch stark überhitzten Wasserdampf oder Auspuffgase, statt, so daß die Temperatur des Kokses etwa 6oo ° beträgt. Alsdann erfolgt die Einführung der festen pulverförmigen Rückstände in die Maschine mit überhitztem Dampf, wobei der Dampf im Zylinderraum mit dem Brennstoff sofort unter Wassergasbildung reagiert. Der Brennstoff kann auch vor seiner Einführung in die Maschine derart mit Wasserdampf beladen werden, daß die einzelnen Brennstoffteilchen bei ihrem Eintritt in den Verbrennungsraum bereits von einem leicht entflammbaren Wassergasmantel umgeben sind. Das Wassergas bewirkt eine sofortige Zündung der Gas-Luft-Koks-Mischung. Es läßt sich auch z. B. derart arbeiten, daß man feste Verkokungsprodukte von gewöhnlicher Temperatur vor ihrem Eintritt in die Maschine vorwärmt und durch hochüberhitzten Wasserdampf auf eine für die Wassergasbildung geeignete Temperatur (6oo bis 7oo °) erhitzt.
