Abstract

A lead-acid battery housing (4) made from plastics material is constructed to rupture in a predetermined manner in the event of an internal gas/air explosion during charging or service. The housing is moulded to provide a number of relatively wear lines of fracture (1) supported by a strong cagelike framework (3,6). An internal explosion thus results in immediate break-up of the housing (4) into defined sections (2) accompanied by rapid pressure release. All sections (2) are bent outwards but retained by the reinforcing action of the edge construction to reduce danger to personnel. USE/ADVANTAGE - For vehicle batteries. Considerably reduces danger to personnel from battery case fragments projected by accidental explosion as experienced with conventional construction. Little extra cost is involved since mutually self reinforcing edges and angles of individual cells inherently provide strong cage.

Description

The invention relates in particular to a battery housing Plastic according to the preamble of claim 1.

Develop batteries with, for example, a lead-acid filling oxyhydrogen gas during charging and self-discharge. This detonating gas can be made via a specially designed vent escaping. However, part of this gas remains in the battery cavities not filled with liquid. Especially during or shortly after charging the battery there may be an ignitable mixture in the gas space. Coming it then leads to an ignition, the ignition source being internal as well external, there may be an explosion of gas mixture and the battery will be destroyed. The Battery case is torn open in an explosion, whereby Tear off individual small housing parts and remove them to the outside can be hurled. Throw such torn off en particles pose a risk of injury to near the Battery located persons.

A remedy for this problem is provided by the invention Solution with the formation of a generic battery case ses according to the characterizing features of claim 1.

Zweckmäßige Ausgestaltungen dieser Lösung sind Gegenstand der Unteransprüche.Appropriate configurations of this solution are the subject of Subclaims.

The principle of the invention is to break lines in arrange individual areas of the battery housing so that can break open the predetermined breaking lines in an explosion, while the opening surface areas each on one Keep the end firmly connected to the housing.

Be a lot over a side surface of the battery case number of individual areas that can be opened If so, care must be taken to ensure that a kind of Truss is provided in the housing on which the individual popping open surface sections can find permanent hold nen. This is the only way to achieve the goal of throwing away to avoid individual small housing wall parts safely.

If a battery is divided into individual compartments, it is for that to ensure that in each chamber area on predetermined breaking lines jumpable wall areas are provided.

The housing wall design according to the invention is particularly suitable especially for automotive batteries. There they are to open wall areas to be placed so that in built-in State of the battery personnel waiting at one Explosion leaking acid are not directly endangered can.

An embodiment is shown in the drawing a view of a battery housing wall surface with two un shows different predetermined breaking line arrangements.

In principle, the predetermined breaking lines must be arranged that they do not have a whole area section, for example enclose in a ring. Because that’s exactly what would happen what should be avoided according to the invention, namely that  Throwing out individual wall areas in the event of an explosion inside the battery case.

The predetermined breaking lines 1 are therefore always arranged in such a way that surface sections 2 are formed which, after springing open at the predetermined breaking lines 1 , can buckle permanently attached to standing housing wall parts. The buckling areas must therefore be in places of increased wall strength of the housing. In the battery housing shown in the left part of the drawing, these regions can be the edge regions 3 of the battery housing, it being possible for the increased strength to be generated by the connection of abutting wall regions given there.

In the example shown in the drawing, the battery housing is divided into individual chambers or cells 4 , which are separated from one another by partitions 5 which are firmly connected to the outer wall of the housing. The Verbindungsbe rich of the individual partitions 5 with the outer wall of the housing also represents a wall area of increased strength, in which abutting surface sections 2 can buckle without being completely detached from the housing.

If a plurality of rising surfaces 2 are to be arranged in one of the walls of a single cell 4 of the battery cabinet, a framework made of reinforced wall areas 6 is to be provided there, on which the rising surface sections 2 can be bent. When executing the battery housing in the right half of the drawing, the framework extends from reinforced wall areas into the edge areas of the battery housing as well as into those areas in which a cell wall ( 5 ) is connected to the outer housing wall.

In addition to the specific examples here based on two embodiments Written breaking line arrangements are still arbitrary many other patterns possible, provided that everyone popping up Section only one retaining bridge remains around which the be hitting area can pop up without leaving the housing entirely to be severed.

If reinforcements are provided in the buckling areas, see above these areas must be truss-like in the housing assembly tied to detachment.
