Diese Steuerung besteht aus dem eigentlichen Dampfcylinder α mit keilförmigen Ansatzflächen und den beiden Führungsbalken b bl. Die letzteren sind hohl; b enthält die Schlitze zur Dampfeinströmung, b1 diejenigen zur Dampfausströmung. Die Anordnung der Dampfkanäle ist eine solche, dafs sich immer die entgegengesetzten Schlitze des Cylinders und der Gleitbalken decken. Um hierbei einen plötzlichen Stofs zu vermeiden, ist die Anordnung getroffen, dafs der Kolben zuerst den Dampfaustritt absperrt und dann auf ein Dampf kissen drückt, welches durch das Arbeitsvermögen des Schwungrades federartig zusammengeprefst wird und dann eine bedeutend höhere Spannung besitzt, als hinter dem Kolben herrscht. Ist der Druck in dem Raum vor dem Kolben genügend gestiegen, so wird der Cylinder in der Richtung der Kolbenbewegung sich verschieben. Hierbei werden der Dampfeintritt c und der Dampfaustritt i geschlossen und die Kanäle c1 und z1 geöffnet, worauf sich der gleiche Vorgang auf der entgegengesetzten Seite wiederholt. Damit der Cylinder nicht über die ihm gestattete Grenze sich verschiebe, wird ihm hinten und vorn ein elastischer Anschlag gegeben, welcher ihn am Weiterrutschen hindert.
