Description
Spreugkapsel. Spreader capsule. The metal sleeves used to make detonators from copper, brass, zinc, aluminum, iron etc. change, especially in the present of moisture, the pop mercury of the pop set by becoming metallic Mercury is excreted and the fulminates used in the pods are concerned Metals are created. These fulminates are unstable and quickly decompose Time and the detonators become ineffective and useless as an initiator. One has sought to eliminate this disadvantage by z. B. those made of brass or iron-made sleeves copper-plated because the copper is less corrosive The fiery mercury acts as zinc or brass. Also tin-plating of the Sleeves made from copper are often used for the same reasons. But tinned copper sleeves still have a noticeable effect on fumed mercury, so that z. B. detect metallic mercury in the brass of the projectile fuse lets when such detonators are loaded with a tinned mercury capsule and store in this charged state for a long time, about two years. Much more resistant to fatal mercury than the sleeves made of the aforementioned metals are sleeves made of metals of the iron group. Also the chemically pure, above all Carbon-free iron shows hardly any detectable effect on prolonged contact on the mercury. Manganese, nickel and cobalt behave even better.
The sleeves made from these metals are not only expensive but also difficult to pull. It is sufficient to achieve the stated purpose if sleeves made of soft, easily drawn metals such as copper, brass, zinc, etc., with a thin plating or an electrolytic layer of metals of the iron group be provided. Such capsules can also be used after loading with the pop set become damp without decomposition of the fumed mercury occurs.
