Description
Process for making waterproof paper. It is known, Paper or cardboard by coating or soaking with solutions of pulp esters, like cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate, waterproof and waterproof. But this process is only superficial. Water resistance and water resistance achieved because the relatively very viscous solutions are only imperfectly in the inside of the paper and especially the cardboard can penetrate. Very dilute Solutions of pulp esters, however, dve through the paper more easily, however In this case, in order to achieve sufficient water resistance, it must be repeated Treatment. Be undertaken, which causes considerable costs and a significant Loss of valuable solvents for pulp esters has resulted. Namely In the case of paper spun into threads, the penetrates even when thin solutions are used for decoration Liquid difficult to get into the inside of the thread, so that perfect water resistance of paper yarn cannot be achieved by impregnation with pulp ester solutions. Impregnation of the spinning paper before spinning is not possible because then the paper does not absorb moisture and does not spin well.
These evils are alleviated by the procedure described below Avoided: One adds to the paper stock during the grinding in the Halländer or also before or after in the stirring vat, but before processing into paper or Cardboard, nitrated, acetylated or otherwise esterified cellulose and processed this mixture of substances just like any other paper stuff on the paper or board machine or on the hand strainer on paper or cardboard. The amount of the addition of pulp esters depends on the desired water resistance and can range from 1 to 5 percent or fluctuate even more. Has proven to be of practical use. an allocation of io Percent dry esterified pulp found on 100 kg of finished paper or Cardboard.
The dried paper or cardboard is then treated with such solvents I> e trades which are suitable the pulp esters. to loosen or soften. Such Solvents are, depending on the type of pulp ester: alcohols, ethers, formic acid esters, amyl acetate, acetone, Chloroform, acetic acid, trichlorethylene, and all pulp esters in general Fabrics. This loosens the pulp ester particles that are distributed throughout the paper and- made sticky. After the evaporation of the - solvent - the fabric fibers cemented together by the dissolved or softened pulp esters, and the paper receives a waterproof coating, which at the same time maintains the resilience of the Paper against tearing and other injuries increases.
The solvents can be almost completely removed by compressing the vapors can be recovered and used again by doing the thing with the solvent treated product dries out in a closed space or container the evaporated solvent is sucked off and compressed by cooling. The Solvents can emollient substances, such as glycerine, or drying agents fatty oils or similar substances, are added to give the product a larger To give suppleness.
Spinning papers are expediently after-spinning: or weaving Treated with the solvent, as the pulp esters in the paper do not have any dampness Difficulty and in this way a well-turned and by the afterthought Solvent treatment made waterproof thread of great 'durability can be. The solvents are appropriate for the type of pulp ester used to choose.
