Barcode-Lesegeräte üblicher Bauart sind als stationäres System, oder als tragbares Gerät in Pistolen- oder Stiftform (Barcodestift) ausgeführt. Bei Lesegeräten in Stiftform ist es notwendig, über das Barcode-Label hinwegzufahren. Das eingelesene Barcode-Wort wird entweder gleich weiterverarbeitet (Beispiel Registrierkasse in Kaufhäusern) oder in einem Zwischenspeicher abgelegt, um später im Ganzen ausgelesen zu werden (Geräte zur Erfassung von Warenbeständen). Die Barcode-Daten werden optisch von der Barcode-Leseeinheit eingelesen und an den Speicher (2) weitergegeben. Wird der Tongeber zu diesen Zeitpunkt an die Sprechmuschel eines Telefongerätes gebracht, so können diese Signale über die Telefonverbindung übertragen werden.
