Beim Kauf oder bei der Mietung eines Kraftfahrzeuges oder einer Wohnung bzw. eines Hauses erhält der Käufer oder Mieter in der Regel neben dem Hauptschlüssel einen Ersatzschlüssel, der zum Aufschließen der Tür des Raumes, also der Wohnung oder des Hauses oder des Kraftfahrzeuges dient, wobei bei letzteren der Ersatzschlüssel auch zum Anlassen des Motors geeignet ist. Dieser Ersatzschlüssel wird normalerweise an einem sicheren Ort in der Wohnung des Inhabers aufbewahrt. Es passiert jedoch mitunter, daß beim Verlassen der Wohnung oder Aussteigen aus dem Fahrzeug der Hauptschlüssel versehentlich in der Wohnung oder im Fahrzeug vergessen und die Tür beim Schließen automatisch verriegelt wird, so daß sie von außen ohne Schlüssel nicht mehr zu öffnen ist. Der Hauptschlüssel kann auch verloren gehen oder gestohlen werden. Der Besitzer der Wohnung oder des Fahrzeuges hat dann keine direkte Möglichkeit, in den Raum zu gelangen. Dies ist ärgerlich, wenn z.B. ein Fahrzeug weit entfernt vom Wohnort abgestellt ist und daher keine Möglichkeit besteht, in absehbarer Zeit in den Besitz des Ersatzschlüssels zu gelangen. Bei fehlendem Wohnungsschlüssel muß ein Fachmann geholt werden, der das Schloß der Eingangstür öffnet. Das Sicherheitsfach kann kann sichtbar oder auch unauffällig, also verdeckt, angebracht werden. Da es nur mittels Werkzeugeinsatz ohne Kode gewaltsam zu öffnen ist, bleibt die Sicherheit gegen unrechtmäßige Entnahme des Schlüssels voll erhalten. Der Besitzer hat dadurch hohe Sicherheit gegenüber Diebstahl. Andererseits ist es beispielsweise auch möglich, einer Vertrauensperson, z.B. telefonisch, den Ort und Kode des Sicherheitsfaches zu übermitteln, so daß diese den Raum mit Hilfe des Schlüssels öffnen und z.B. ein abgestelltes Fahrzeug benutzen kann.
