The invention relates to handsets for telecommunications, preferably with one-hand operation, according to the preamble of claim 1.

One-handed telecommunications devices, whether wired or wireless, are manufactured by a number of manufacturers worldwide. Each manufacturer produces a variety of models. There are many millions of these handsets in use worldwide, and the number is growing at a rapid pace.

These handsets have an elongated housing, the dimensions of which are becoming smaller and smaller. The controls that are essential for the user - microphone, loudspeaker or earphone, display and keyboard - are located on the front of the housing. All handsets of all models from all manufacturers worldwide have one thing in common: in the natural hand position, the display is at the top and the keyboard at the bottom. This arrangement means that the thumb used to operate the keyboard in one-handed operation has to adopt an unnatural position. With extremely miniaturized handsets, this is no longer sufficient; the handset has to be pushed far up in the hand, so that it no longer sits securely in the hand. The handset can fall to the floor.

The present invention solves the problem of remedying this problem by swapping the position of the display and keyboard, while all other components such as loudspeaker, microphone and, if applicable, antenna retain their position.

The invention will be explained in more detail in the form of two embodiments with reference to the drawing.

Fig. 1 shows a commercially available handset for wireless telecommunications, held by the hand of a user. A miniaturized housing can be seen, which contains transmitting and receiving electronics, and an antenna at the top of the housing. On the front of the housing, from top to bottom, you can see the opening for a loudspeaker or earphone, a display, a keyboard with a large number of keys and a microphone.

In the natural hand position shown in the drawing, the thumb, which is usually used for one-handed operation, is at the height of the display. If the user wants to operate the keyboard with the thumb, he must first push the handset upwards in his hand, which worsens the mechanical hold of the handset in the hand, and then operate the keyboard with an unnaturally angled thumb.

Fig. 2 shows the handset of Fig. 1 after the modification according to the invention. The display is now at the bottom, i.e. next to the microphone, and the keyboard is at the top, i.e. next to the loudspeaker or antenna. It can be seen that the keyboard is now at thumb height, so that the keys can be pressed without having to move the device in the hand and angle the thumb unnaturally. The display is not covered in the process.

Fig. 3 shows a second embodiment of another, also commercially available handset for wireless telecommunications, here with a flap hinged to the bottom of the housing that carries the microphone. With this handset too, the thumb is at the height of the display when the hand is held naturally, so that it is not possible to operate the keyboard without contortions.

Fig. 4 shows the handset of Fig. 3 after the modification according to the invention. With a natural hand position, the keyboard is now at thumb height and can therefore be operated without any problem. There is no risk of the display being covered.

Handset for telecommunications, preferably with one-hand operation, essentially comprising - a housing, - electronics in the housing, - a speaker or earphone, a microphone, a display and a keyboard on the front of the case - and if necessary an antenna on the housing, characterized by the features: - the keyboard is next to the earpiece, - the display is located next to the microphone.
