"Compact Disc" protective cover

The invention relates to the development of a "Compact Disc' ⁷ (CD) protective cover which can be used in a variety of ways, as a packaging, shipping and storage cover for audio CDs and CD-ROMs, whereby the design of the CD protective cover ensures comfortable handling for the user through a particularly defined and positioned grip and tab.

The CD protective cases currently on the market can be described as so-called "closed systems" because a closure must be opened or closed before handling the audio CD or CD-ROM. The new CD protective case, on the other hand, is converted into a storage case after the closure surface with flap has been removed once and can therefore be described as an "open system". This improvement compared to other CD protective cases means that there is no need to open or close it beforehand, after which the audio CD or CD-ROM can be easily removed or inserted.

Once packaged, the CD can be stuck into computer magazines as an insert or sent by post in a mailing envelope. After receiving the audio CD or CD-ROM, the user can convert the CD mailing envelope into a convenient CD storage case by cutting off the closure area along the perforation. The simplest way to produce a CD storage case that is ideal for archiving. For example, a simple 5.25-inch "floppy disc box" or a standard DIN A6 index card box can be used as an archive, in which the CDs can be handled like index cards. The production of archiving systems for CD protective cases will not be discussed here, but left to the market. This also applies to the various options for adhesive or connection techniques that can be used to connect the front (2) to the base (1).

The advantages achieved with the new CD protective cover are in particular that such a simply designed CD protective cover enables a folding box printer to punch and print folding boxes and pack CDs in them ready for shipping (addressed) in one operation. Due to the mirror-image curve, the manufacturer is now able to produce the opening and the flap in one operation with one punching or cutting tool and without any leftovers.

The same advantages apply to the production of CD protective covers from different plastic qualities.

Fig. 1 shows the base area (1) with 13 cm ² , the unfolded front area (2) with the opening (3), the closure area (4) with the flap (5) and standard CD (6). The defined curve (3) x->f (x)=±r*cos(x/k) begins at the section of the front area (2) with the opening (3) ideally at 82=8.5 cm and the closure area (4) with the flap (5) ideally at Si=7.5 cm. Within the definition range of the section ab = cd (Fig. 1), the intervals for the start of the curve of the front area [cd] (2) and closure area [a _; b] (4) are ideally set to [4.0;9.0] cm each. The variable r represents the radius value of the cosine function and is ideally set to 2 cm (2), because this value for the support points (7, 8) from the turning point (WP) [3,25.0] and WP [9,75.0] (3) in the y-direction proved to be the optimal value for the stabilizers {3, 7, 8) on the sides. The base area (1) is dimensioned so that there is a clearance of 0.5 cm on the left and right of the sides (9, 10) for handling the CD. This allows the user to easily remove or insert the CD without any resistance.

The notch (11) for the tab has a length of 5 cm, a side distance of 4 cm each and runs parallel at a distance of 2.5 cm to the lower base or front surface edge (12).

Fig. 2 shows the CD protective cover with a closed front surface (2). The base surface (1) with the three unlabeled index fields (13), front surface with opening (2, 3), the closure surface with flap (4, 5), the perforation (14), index fields (13) and the indicated standard CD (6) can be seen. The CD protective cover can be manufactured with or without the index fields (13) printed on. For direct sales, the closure surface (4) can be omitted when the CD protective cover is manufactured, because the audio CDs or CD-ROMs in transparent packaging are attractive and sales-promoting due to the predominantly creatively designed CD surfaces.

Fig. 3 shows a closed CD protective case on which it can be seen that the tab (5) of the closure surface (4) is inserted into the notch (11) of the front surface (2). The notch (11) as a closure is not necessary, but the tab (5) can

can also be sealed or secured with an adhesive strip or round sticker. The sealing surface (4) is dimensioned so that it offers sufficient space for franking (15) , positioning a barcode (16), sender (17) and address field (18).
