The present invention relates to an agent for dyeing or tinting human hair with improved usage properties.

It is generally known that hair dyes are divided into two categories: on the one hand, permanent hair dyes, which basically contain hair dye precursors, which, together with oxidizing agents, develop the desired color on the hair depending on their composition; and on the other hand, semi-permanent hair dyes, which contain direct dyes that do not require any oxidizing agent to develop their coloring performance. Accordingly, the colors are also less permanent than those that can be achieved with permanent dyes.

These color compositions based on direct dyes are usually applied either as tinting shampoos, as lotions or as tinting fixatives, possibly also as aerosol foam. In some cases, especially for dyes based on plant-based dyes, the use of powdered products has also been suggested, which must be mixed with water before being applied to the hair.

All these compositions have the disadvantage that, when used, they not only dye the hair as intended, but also the scalp and the adjacent parts of the facial skin.

The present invention is therefore based on the task of creating a hair dye based on direct dyes that does not have these disadvantages.

This object is achieved according to the invention by adding a polyethylene glycol and/or a polypropylene glycol, preferably with a molecular weight between about 150 and about 50,000, to a hair dye or tinting agent which contains at least one direct hair dye.

The preferred amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or polypropylene glycol (PPG) in the hair dyes according to the invention is about 0.5 to about 10, preferably 1 to 9, in particular 2.5 to 7.5% by weight, calculated on the total composition of the ready-to-use hair dye (i.e., in the case of concentrates such as powders, the information naturally refers to the product diluted with water immediately before use. The concentration in the powder is then of course correspondingly higher). Mixtures of PEG and PPG can of course also be used.

The use of PEG or PPG not only reduces or prevents skin discoloration; surprisingly, there is also no negative impact on the hair dye effect.

In principle, all dyes approved for this purpose can be used as direct hair dyes; reference is made in particular to the German "Regulation on Cosmetic Products (Cosmetics Regulation)" in the currently applicable version, Annex 3.

However, cationic (basic) dyes are preferred.

Vegetable dyes can also be used alone or in combination with synthetic direct dyes, for example henna (red or black), alkanet root, laccaic acid (stick varnish), logwood powder, madder root and rhubarb root powder, etc.

The proportion of direct dyes in the compositions according to the invention is variable depending on the desired color and application form; in the case of powdered products, which are considerably diluted with water during use, it is generally between about 0.1 to about 25, preferably 0.5 to 10, in particular 1 to 5% by weight of the agent.

If the agent is available as a solution, dispersion, emulsion, gel or aerosol preparation for direct application, i.e. without prior dilution, the concentration used is correspondingly lower, preferably about 0.005 to about 2.5% by weight of the colorant, preferably 0.01 to 1.5% by weight, in particular

about 0.05 to 1% by weight, particularly preferably 0.1 to 0.5% by weight of the total composition. The compositions that can be considered as the basis for the hair dyes according to the invention are known per se; reference is made, for example, to the well-known monograph by K. Schrader, Grundlagen und Rezepturen der Kosmetika, 2nd edition (1989), pp. 800 to 815.

The polyethylene glycols and polypropylene glycols used according to the invention are commercially available products within a wide molecular weight range between about 150 and about 50,000, preferably between 250 and 35,000, particularly preferably between 1,000 and 25,000, in particular 2,500 to 20,000.
The same applies to polypropylene glycol.

Suitable commercial products are, for example, the various ¹¹ Polywachs® types, e.g. "Polywachs® 550", "Polywachs® 650", "Polywachs® 1000", "Polywachs® 1550", "Polywachs® 4000", "Polywachs® 5000/6000", and "Polywachs® 12000" or "Carbowaxe®".

An overview can be found, for example, in Schrader, I.e., p. 234 235 and in H. P. Fiedler, Lexicon of auxiliary substances for pharmacy, cosmetics and related areas, 3rd edition (1989), pp. 964 - 969.

Corresponding polypropylene glycols are also known, cf. Fiedler, I.e., pp. 990 - 991, e.g. the commercial products "Polyglycol &Rgr;®" from Dow Chemical Co. or "Witconol®" from Witco Co.

The hair dye and tinting agent according to the invention can contain at least one synthetic or natural hair conditioning polymer, preferably in an amount of 0.1 to 10, in particular 0.5 to 5% by weight of the total composition. Although in principle all types of polymers can be used, i.e. non-ionic, anionic, amphoteric and cationic polymers, cationic polymers are preferred within the scope of the invention.

If the products according to the invention are color powders, they usually contain a water-soluble or at least swellable powder base, for example starch, maltodextrin, cyclodextrin, silica gel, polyethylene glycols, etc., preferably in an amount of about 10 to about 70, in particular about 20 to about 50 wt.% of the total composition.

These components are known, as is the use of surfactants, particularly when it comes to tinting shampoos, preferably in an amount of about 5 to 30% by weight of the agent.

Suitable surfactants are anionic surfactants such as long-chain N-acylaminocarboxylic acids
and their salts such as N-lauroylsarcosinate
and -glutamate, amphoteric surfactants such as betaines, &zgr;. B. Cocoamidopropylbetaine, as well as nonionic and cationic surfactants,
ζ. B. C-[2~C;L8-alkyl!polyglycol ethers, and ethylene oxide/propylene oxide copolycondensates and long-chain quaternary ammonium compounds,
ζ. B. Distearyl or dilauryldimethylammonium chloride.

Cationic surfactants are preferably used in paint emulsions or dispersions.

The colorants according to the invention can contain the additives customary in such compositions, the type and character of which depends on the form of application of the agent, e.g.
Fats, fatty alcohols, emulsifiers, pH regulators, protein hydrolysates, solubilizers, preservatives, perfumes, etc.

If the colour powder is used, it is mixed with water in a ratio of about 1 : 5 to about 1 : 30, preferably
1 : 10 to 1 : 20, mixed, evenly distributed on the hair and after about 20 to 30 minutes
removed by shampooing.

Solutions, gels, emulsions, dispersions, etc. are applied directly to the hair to be colored.

The following examples illustrate the invention and the effects achieved thereby.

Analogous to example 1, but without polyethylene glycol 1000.

Both products produced a light reddish-brown, indistinguishable hair color in the half-side test.

The skin-staining effect of both products was compared by applying them to the fingertips of each hand of 8 test subjects. After 2 minutes, the hands were washed with warm water.

It was found that for all 8 test subjects, the fingertips of the hands treated with a gel according to Example 1 were largely discolored, while a clear red-brown color remained on the fingertips of the hands treated with a gel according to Example IA.

An analogous composition 2α did not contain PEG-200.

The staining was carried out on 8 test subjects in a half-side test, as described in Example 1.

In both cases, a dark reddish-brown color was obtained; in the fingertip staining test, the subjects treated with the composition according to Example 2A consistently showed a coloration, in contrast to those treated with the composition according to Example 2.

One example, 3A, did not contain PPG; instead, it contained diatomaceous earth.

Before use, the powders were mixed in a ratio of 5 g powder with 80 ml water and the resulting thickened solutions were applied to the hair of 8 test subjects in a half-side test as described in Example 1 and rinsed out after 15 minutes of exposure.

An indistinguishable natural brown hair color was obtained.

The fingertip staining test carried out analogously to Example 1 showed consistent staining with the composition of Example 3A and no staining with that of Example 3.
