Abstract

A hand-held tool opens cardboard boxes. The tool has a main handle (50) incorporating a retractable ratchet-fixed knife blade and a set of hinged jaws incorporating a standard knife blade to open nylon straps. The tool further incorporates a fixture to remove metal staples.

Claims

1. A device for opening cardboard boxes, characterized by a main body ( 10 ) and a cover ( 20 ) combined with the main body, the main body and the cover being made of one piece with a symmetrically formed head plate ( 12 , 22 ) on the upper side and an inclined blade groove ( 13 , 21 ) being formed under both plates, which receives a blade ( 30 ) for cutting off plastic packaging tapes spanning a cardboard box; further characterized by a staple removing device ( 40 ) which is arranged on the upper rear side of the main body ( 10 ) and is provided with a metal cover ( 42 ) which is provided at a set part with a staple removing body for removing staples from a cardboard box; and characterized by a telescopically displaceable blade device ( 50 ) provided in the lower part of the cover body ( 20 ) and pierced in the bottom by a groove opening for a blade ( 30 ) to push this blade outwardly through the opening and thereby cut off adhesive tape adhering to the joints and edges of a cardboard box.

2. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the main body ( 10 ) and the cover ( 20 ) together with their head plates ( 12 , 22 ) are molded in one piece from plastic, and that a protective plate is provided in front of the inclined blade groove ( 13 , 23 ), which is wider than the head plate ( 12 , 22 ).

3. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the staple removing device ( 40 ) comprises a metal reinforcing body ( 41 ) which is fastened in a cut groove ( 60 ) on the upper rear side of the main body ( 10 ).

4. Device according to claim 3, characterized in that the metal reinforcement body ( 41 ) is provided at its upper end with a projecting plate ( 411 ) extending from the main body ( 10 ) and having a stop notch ( 412 ) in the back, and that the metal cover ( 42 ) is placed with its opposite sides at a suitable location of the device for opening cardboard boxes, being firmly connected at the upper end to a top cover ( 427 ) whose front edge abuts against the stop notch ( 412 ) of the metal reinforcement body ( 41 ) while staples are being removed.

5. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that an elongated opening ( 61 ) is formed between a lower, front, connected part of the main body ( 10 ) and the cover ( 20 ), which can be closed by a cover plate, and that the main body ( 10 ) has a chamber ( 18 ) on the inside of the cover plate ( 62 ) which serves to store reserve blades ( 30 ).
