Water vapor permeable composite shoe sole comprises openings closed with a barrier material to prevent ingress of foreign bodies, where the barrier material is supported by a stabilizing system of crosspieces and the openings are separated by tread sections. An independent claim is also included for footwear comprising a sole as above and a watertight, water vapor permeable functional layer.
