Seit den Zeiten Dom Perignons hat zwar die prinzipielle Verschlusskonstruktion überdauert, ansonsten hat sich jedoch fast alles verändert. Neben Champagner gibt es eine Vielzahl von weiteren, miteinander hart am Markt konkurrierenden Schaumweine wie z.B. Sekt, Prosecco, Cremant, Cava, etc., die Zahl der allein in Europa pro Jahr abgefüllten Schaumweinflaschen übersteigt die Milliardengrenze, und die dazugehörigen Kapselverschlüsse werden vollautomatisch in Abfüllstrassen auf die Flaschen appliziert. Der Konsum von Schaumwein stellt im Gegensatz zu früheren Zeiten, als dieses Getränk den Reichen und Adligen vorbehalten war, heutzutage ein Allerweltsvergnügen für nahezu jedermann dar, mit der Proletarisierung dieses Luxusgetränks einher ging dann auch der Ersatz des nur aufwendig zu erstellenden Naturkorkstopfens des Kapselverschlusses – insbesondere preiswertere Schaumweinsorten kommen heute ausschließlich mit Kunststoffstopfen auf den Markt. Dies hat neben den preislichen Vorteilen auch zur Folge, dass ein dramatischer Nachteil der (teureren) korkbasierten Kapselverschlüsse, der Anfälligkeit für durch Mikroorganismenbefall verursachte, geruchliche Inhaltskontamination, vermieden werden kann. Dieser schlicht 'Kork' genannte Geschmackston zerstört den Schaumweininhalt der Flasche unrettbar, bei Verkaufskosten von z.B. einer Flasche Champagner zwischen 50EUR–500EUR (je nach Jahrgang) eine in jedem Fall bittere Überraschung. Natürlich bestünde heute wie bereits erwähnt, prinzipiell die Möglichkeit des Einsatzes von Plastikstopfen statt Kork, analog zum Schaumwein-Billigsegment. Im Sektor der qualitativ hochwertigen Schaumweine wie Champagner, besserer Prosecci oder Crements sowie traditiosreicher Sekte ist diese Lösung jedoch schlicht undenkbar, das Billig-Image, das Plastikstopfen anhaftet, verträgt sich nicht mit dem Anspruch an Tradition und Kultur, das derartige, oft über Jahrhunderte kultivierte Edelmarken, für sich reklamieren Generell bestünde natürlich schon ein Ansatz, den alt-ehrwürdigen Schaumwein-Kapselverschluss ein wenig zu hinterfragen, schließlich haben seit Dom Perignons Zeiten auf dem Verschlusssektor enorme Veränderungen stattgefunden. Die meisten der Getränke, die heute mit Kohlensäure beaufschlagt auf den Markt kommen, sind heute alkoholfrei – z.B. Limonaden – und kommen (druckresistent) verpackt in Plastikeinwegflaschen mit Schraubverschlüssen zum Konsumenten (Absatzvolumen Plastikeinwegflaschen in Deutschland im Jahre 2005: 16 Milliarden Gebinde). Neben dem alles dominierenden Schraubverschluss gibt es natürlich auch noch andere Gebindeformen am Markt, zu erwähnen wäre hier die berühmte Getränkedose mit Blechlaschenverschluss – allerdings geht die Bedeutung z.B. der Getränkedose immer mehr zurück (mittlerweile nur noch ein Prozent Marktanteil am Gesamtmarkt der Einwegverpackungen). Die Vorteile, die der Schraubverschluss generell bietet (billig, druckresistent, geschmacksneutral, sicher etc.) haben in jüngster Zeit denn auch tatsächlich sogar manchen Weinabfüller zum Konvertiten werden lassen, dennoch kann von echter Akzeptanz und Markterfolg nicht gesprochen werden. Im Wein und Sektmarkt dominiert der Stopfen aus Kork oder Plastik (bei Weinen mittlerweile neben Kork und Plastik sogar manchmal auch Glas), eine breite Umstellung auf Schraubgewindeeinsatz, der dann natürlich auch entsprechende Änderungen bei der Produktion der Glasflaschen erforderte, ist abs. undenkbar. Leider ist die Öffnungsprozedur derartiger Flaschen mit Stopfen oft nicht gerade ein Kinderspiel, weder beim Wein, wo man nur mithilfe des speziellen Werkzeugs Korkenzieher zum Inhalt vordringen kann, erst recht nicht beim Schaumwein, wo zwar ein erheblicher Innendruck (3 Bar) bereit steht, um den Stopfen – – nach seiner Befreiung aus seiner Drahtsicherung – aus dem Flaschenhals zu treiben, dem aber ein noch wesentlich grösserer Reibungswiderstand durch extrem komprimiertes Stopfenmaterial im Flaschenhals entgegensteht um diesen Vorgang (unkontrolliert) zu verhindern. Die richtige Positionierung der innenliegenden Verschlusskomponenten im Flaschenhals wird garantiert durch die Begrenzung von deren Einführtiefe mittels am Steckrohr (2) angelagerten, ausfedernden Aufsetznocken (7) die sich im oberen Drittel des Steckrohres (2) befinden, das immer außerhalb des Flaschenhalses bleibt. Ebenfalls in diesem Bereich angeordnet ist ein Anschlag (8), der den Hub der kolbenartigen Verdickung (9) begrenzt, mit dem der Dorn (4) die Konushülse in die Flasche presst. Ausgezogen wird die Konushülse (3) dann beim Öffnungsvorgang durch einen am Dornende platzierten Mitnehmerkopf (10), der die Verkeilsituation mit einem Schlag/per Impulseintrag, beendet. Die Gewähr, daß ständig Kontakt zwischen einteiliger Verschlusskappe (1) und Dorn (4) besteht, um die jeweiligen linearen Bewegungen während des Öffnungs-oder Schließvorgangs unvermittelt übertragen zu können, garantiert ein Innengewinde (11), mit dem der Dorn (4), an seinem der Verschlusskappe zugewandten Ende ausgerüstet ist.
