Description
Gerätschaft zur UV-Bestrahlung und Entkeimung von Stäuben in und aus BriefsendungenEquipment for UV irradiation and disinfection of dust in and from mail
BeschreibungDescription
The subject of this application is equipment that irradiates and disinfects the surface and the contained or leaking contents of letters or packages with UV light. In this way, contamination by or the spread of microbiologically questionable or even dangerous contents can be greatly reduced or completely eliminated. Microbiologically dangerous ingredients (bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores...) either get into letters for criminal or terrorist reasons or due to poor hygiene, e.g. when sent from epidemic areas.
The device in the sense of this application irradiates letters on the surface and in particular when the mail is opened (possibly automatically). The general use of UV light for disinfection purposes - e.g. - for disinfecting drinking water has long been state of the art. This application concerns special embodiments with regard to letters and parcels.
In particular, when opening the shipment (2-1), a diffuse UV light distribution (2-2) must be set up so that no shadow areas with non-deactivated germs can arise. Escaping dust is deactivated in situ. Low-pressure mercury lamps with very short-wave line emission are particularly suitable as radiators.
External irradiation with a very high dose rate can also be advantageously carried out using medium-pressure mercury lamps (1-3). This has the advantage of a higher power density and the presence of slightly longer-wave UV radiation components that penetrate deeper into the mail item and also have a disinfecting effect inside. The mail items (1-1) can be continuously passed through the irradiation. Lightly moistening the mail item with a suitable spray mist (1-2) can increase the transparency of the envelope (1-1) for UV light and reduce overheating (fire hazard) in the extremely intensive radiation zone. In addition, photochemical activation of the moistening or the additives contained therein can have an additional disinfecting effect. The chemical disinfection effect would thus be limited to a short period after irradiation, and subsequent toxic effects of the moistening would no longer occur.
