Die zur Zeit im Handel erhältlichen Modelliermassen wie Gips und Pappmache sind für den Außenbereich nicht geeignet. Modelliermassen auf Zementbasis(Putz und Maurermörtel) sind nur mit dem grauen Zement erhältlich und einer feinen Sandmischung. Die Oberfläche ist nicht besonders ansprechend und wird im gestalterischen Bereich meist mit farbigen Lacken behandelt. Außerdem muss das Material bei der Verarbeitung feucht gehalten werden und bei größeren Arbeiten sind kleine Haarrisse kaum zu vermeiden.
