Abstract

The aid for making contact bifocal lenses compatible enables all visual impressions produced by bifocal lenses of the simultaneous system to be simulated without contact lenses being put on. Monovision is simulated, the different surface conditions from far to near can be continuously adjusted. Sight impressions are simulated fror each eye separately under binocular conditions. The dominant and non-dominant eyes are taken into account.

Description

When fitting bifocal contact lenses for presbyopic eyes, I presented repeatedly found that many different lens systems can be successfully adapted, the disadvantages of these lenses but always led to unsuccessful adjustments.

Through my two professions - exclusively contact lens adaptation as an optician and lecturer at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin - I gained experience in dealing with the bifocal lenses and realized why the previous BifoCL only function inadequately:
Due to the necessary vertical movement, the CL with alternating technology (distant part is at the top, the near area below, the CL is prevented from rotating by a prism) as a hard, dimensionally stable CL, which is often perceived by the lower eyelid as a foreign body. In brighter light or strong blinking, these CLs are decentred or rotated so that the visual acuity is subject to strong fluctuations.
The CL with simultaneous technology (far part and near part are distributed concentrically on the CL) always offers a sharp image through the corresponding part, but at the same time also a blurred image through the other area, so that a certain shadow is always perceived.

BifoCL of the simultaneous system are used by many manufacturers from a wide variety of materials offered, but no CL currently on the market fulfills the claim to be universal to be applicable.

The unanimous opinion among colleagues and manufacturers as well as at congresses again it can be heard that there must be individual properties of the CL wearer which are about Success and failure decide. So there is nothing left but to test all CL types, a very time and cost intensive process with an uncertain outcome.

So a new measuring device was created - Bifocall lens fitting aid - for quick pre-sorting of the necessary CL data.

One only has to give the eye the opportunity to look at a visual test through a device and now infinitely mix the areas of distance and proximity, so that an individual result arises.

The light coming from a visual test is transmitted through two polarization filters rotated by 90 ° fed to a beam splitter, in front of which there is a rotatable polarizing filter. Now watch a test person through this filter arrangement the visual sample, they will not notice anything special can, regardless of the axis of the rotating polarizing filter. The eye cannot determine through which light path it looks and does not know whether maybe both light paths are switched on (polarizing filter in 45 ° position).

Only when you put an optical glass with the strength of a suitable one in one light path Reading glasses uses (holder for near-addition glass), the above-mentioned blurred double images arise as Shadows, the intensity of which can be influenced by turning the polarizing filter.

This setting option enables me to design individual BifoCL in Dependence on the visual tasks, the sensitivity and the dominance distribution of the Pair of eyes of the individual CL wearer.

You can also find intolerance to this CL system if there is no setting is accepted.

It should also be emphasized that with this device even monovision (one eye distant, the other for proximity) can be simulated.

In conclusion, it remains to be said that the selection of the CL carriers and also the determination of the correct CL data is made considerably easier with this measuring device.

Claims (1)

1. The bifocall lens fitting aid greatly facilitates the fitting of bifocal contact lenses, because with its help all visual impressions generated by bifocal lenses of the simultaneous system can be simulated without a contact lens.
The claims extend in particular to:
simulating monovision,
the stepless adjustment of the different surface conditions from far to close,
simulating the visual impressions under binocular conditions for each eye individually,
the possibility of considering the dominant and non-dominant eye.
