KAISERLICHES PATENTAMT. Um den als Kesselumhüllungsmittel angewendeten Filz gegen das Verbrennen zu schützen, werden Platten von gewöhnlichem Kuhhaarfilz mit einer Mischung von gepulvertem Graphit und Wasserglas bestrichen. Die Befestigung der so behandelten Filzplatten auf dem Kessel oder auf Dampfrohren erfolgt durch die gleiche Masse, der man aber in diesem Falle eine gewisse Menge, etwa ein Drittel des Volumens, klein geschnittenes frisches Moos oder ein ähnliches Präparat einer saftreichen Pflanze beifügt, und zwar sind, um eine möglichst gleichmäfsige Stärke der Umhüllungslage zu erzielen, die auf einander zu legenden Enden der Platten entsprechend abzuschärfen, die Schärfstellen dick mit der Auftragungsmasse zu bestreichen und dann die Verbindungsstellen fest auf einander zu pressen. Nach dem Hartwerden der Wasserglasmischung tritt beim Heizen des Kessels ein Austrocknen und allmäliges Zerfallen der beigemischten Pflanzentheile ein, wodurch sich Poren in der Graphitverbindung bilden. Diese poröse Schicht ist ein sehr schlechter Wärmeleiter und trägt neben der Filzplatte vorzugsweise zur Erhaltung der Hitze im Kessel und in den Rohren bei. Aufserdem aber empfiehlt es sich noch, einen gleichen Anstrich nach dem Umhüllen aufsen auf die Filzplatten aufzutragen, weil dadurch eine sehr rauhe Oberfläche entsteht, die das Ausstrahlen der Wärme ebenfalls wesentlich verhindert.
