Durch geeignete Bemessung der in den Scheidewänden befindlichen Durchtrittsquerschnitte d kann man während der Strömung des Gases eine Reihe Druckstufen nebeneinander aufrecht erhalten und durch öffnen der entsprechenden Kammer den erforderlichen verminderten Druck erzielen. Die Regelung geschieht dann durch Zu- bezw. Ausschalten der verschiedenen Kammern. Dies kann durch einen Schieber er welcher die Austrittsöffnungen f der Kammern gleichmäßig überdeckt, bewirkt werden; jedoch können anstatt des Schiebers auch andere Absperrvorrichtungen, wie Ventilkegel, Klappen, Ventilteller oder dergl., angewendet werden.
