Die Erfindung bezweckt, die Herstellung eines schwefelhaltigen Baumwollfarbstoffs, der erhalten wird, wenn man den aus diazotirtem Nitroamidophenol (O H: NH2 : NO2 =1:2:4,) und m-Toluylendiamin entstehenden Azofarbstoff mit Schwefel und Schwefelalkalien verschmilzt. 115 kg krystallisirtes Schwefelnatrium, 29 kg Schwefel und ca. 25 kg Wasser werden zusammen gelöst und in die etwa 80° warme Lösung trägt man den unter Anwendung von 15,4 kg Nitroamidophenol und 12,2 kg m-Toluylendiamin erhältlichen Farbstoff nach und nach ein. Unter gutem Rühren wird die Temperatur allmählich auf ca. i6o° gebracht und auf dieser Höhe etwa eine Stunde gehalten; zur Vollendung der Farbstoff bildung erhitzt man alsdann noch ca. 3 Stunden auf 200 bis 2050. Das so erhaltene Product bildet eine schwarze poröse Masse, welche direct zum Färben verwendet werden kann. Es löst sich leicht in Wasser mit gelbbrauner Farbe; die gleiche Farbe zeigt die Lösung in cone. Schwefelsäure. Beim Ansäuern der wässerigen Lösung des Farbstoffs oder beim Durchleiten von Luft durch diese Lösung fällt der Farbstoff in braunen Flocken aus. Auf ungeheizter Baumwolle erzeugt der Farbstoff dunkel olivbraune Töne von bemerkenswerther Echtheit. Die Nuance dieser Färbungen wird durch Nachbehandlung mit Kupfer- und Chromsalzen nur wenig verändert.
