Description

The invention relates to a method for producing a paper or cardboard-like mica-containing insulation material based on the known method for processing mica according to French patent 1 005 600. Mica flakes of high surface activity are obtained, if you heat mica at about 800 ° C - the temperature to be used depends on the type of mica - a certain time, for example 10 to 15 minutes, that is, calcined. The calcination does not go as far as the complete expulsion of the crystal water, but a certain amount of crystal water remains in the mica. If this partially calcined mica is then finely dispersed in a liquid, generally water, the suspension takes on properties which in many respects resemble those of paper pulp. In analogy to paper production, one speaks of a mica pulp, which can then be further processed on a Fourdrinier machine. According to the invention, to produce a mica-containing paper or cardboard insulation material on glass silk, a suspension of calcined mica split into very fine flakes is applied, the liquid is sucked off and the material consisting of glass silk and mica layer is dried by supplying heat. In this way, an insulating material of high dielectric strength and high heat resistance is obtained which is superior to pure glass fiber. Glass fiber and mica layer are so firmly connected that when bending, as is necessary when processing the material for the insulation of current-carrying parts, the mica layer does not crumble or flake off.
