Insbesondere bei der Verwendung von eisernen Wasserleitungsrohren enthält das zum Spülen benutzte Leitungswasser oft hohe Anteile an Eisenoxyd und Eisenhydroxyd in fester Form, das sich im Gewebe absetzt und zu Beschädigungen führt. Ebenso werden bei hartem Wasser feste Kalkablagerungen in größeren und kleineren Partikeln durch die Wäsche gedrückt, wobei ein Großteil dieser Partikeln hängenbleibt, was ebenfalls eine Beschädigung der Wäsche hervorrufen kann.
