Abstract

In a process to improve the coating characteristics of a carton web, the web is first continually coated with an adhesive that sets the COBB surface liquid absorption characteristics to a maximum of 35 g H2O/m within 60 seconds on a surface area of 100 cm. By this process the web is pre-calandered. After passing through the wide nip (5) a further application (19) of an adhesive is made of at least eight percent with respect to the pigment mass portion in the printing ink. The web roughness is brought to a maximum roughness of 6 m in the wide nip (5). Prior to the wide nip the web is moistened and heated to at least 100C. The coating is applied at a rate of 15 g/m and has a water retention of 50 to 80 s. The nip (15) is formed between a hard surface and a soft surface.
