Description

Filter for the separation of spectral lines in the wave range of 240 up to 260 mu To isolate the Hg line 2537, e.g. B. for fluorescence analysis is so far only the chlorine filter is known. This consists of a cuvette of 5 up to 20 cm penetration width made of quartz, which with chlorine gas under pressure of 5 until about 1 atmosphere is filled. Connected in series with this chlorine cuvette is usually still a filter for the visible part of the spectrum. The handling this combined filter is very complicated, and the luminous efficiency is because of the relatively long light path is relatively small.

It has been found that the adsorption compounds of iodine with certain high-polymer organic compounds containing free OH groups, namely those caused by the action of iodine on polyvinyl alcohols, even in thin ones Layers absorb almost the entire spectrum in the range from 200 to 750 mp with the exception of a narrow passband between 230 and 280 m & t. The usage such layers as a filter to isolate spectral lines in this area, especially the mercury resonance line of 253.7 m # t, and their manufacture are Subject of this invention.

The production of such a layer acting as a filter is described in more detail below. A polyvinyl alcohol film with a thickness of 0.05 mm, the permeability of which in the UV wave range between 200 and 300 m # t is about 40% and more, is in an aqueous, about 0.1% iodine solution - possibly with the addition of volatile acids such as hydriodic acid or acetic acid, or of salts such as sodium chloride or other salts that do not absorb UV light - colored in such a way that the resulting adsorption complex iodine-polyvinyl alcohol shows a deep dark blue color in transmitted white light. The film is then slowly dried at about 20 ° C. so that as little iodine as possible escapes. Complete drying can then be carried out at higher temperatures. The depth of color is to be adjusted so that when measuring the light transmittance in the visible spectrum for the range of blue light, a transmittance of about 0.3 to 10 / is achieved. This makes the filter suitable for isolating the mercury line. Good values for the permeability of filters produced in this way over the entire spectrum from 200 to 750 m # t are shown in the table below. Wavelengths are given in m # t, transmittances = D in ° / o.

Instead of a single isotropic film made of polyvinyl alcohol-iodine, however, it is also possible to use two or more films made anisotropic by stretching and colored with iodine. Two of these foils are then arranged in such a way that the directions of oscillation of the light passing through them, but now polarized, are perpendicular to one another. It goes without saying that the values of the permeability given above can be varied and thereby also the half-value width and the permeabilities of the respective filter in the UV range.
