Zur automatischen Sortierung von Aufzeichnungsträgern, wie Briefe od. dgl., ist es erforderlich, auf diesen Markierungen aufzubringen, die von einer entsprechenden Auswerte-Einrichtung abgetastet und ausgewertet werden. Auf Grund dieser Auswertung werden Steuereinrichtungen beeinflußt, die beispielsweise den Laufweg eines Briefes in der Verteilanlage bestimmen.
