Abstract
The use of camera-based security systems is growing at a rapid rate in modern automobiles. In the same way, windshields, where many of the cameras are mounted, are getting larger and more complex in shape. As the industry moves towards the development of autonomous capable vehicles, the number of cameras required and the resolution of they increase. However, the optical quality of the windshield is less than optimal. One of the problems is caused by the typical black enamel frit that is imprinted on the glass, prior to heating and curving, to hide or obscure the camera components. Steep thermal gradients during bending, caused by the black frit absorbing heat, result in a high level of distortion in the camera's field of view. The object of the present invention is to provide an automotive laminated glass having an area of darkening produced by creating darkening after heating and bending of the glass by applying a substantially opaque thin insert to at least one of the surfaces of the adhesive layer of intermediate plastic, thin sheets or layers of glass in or near the camera's field of view that subsequently serves as the darkening rather than printing and firing an enamel frit on the glass. This results in a laminate that has superior optical quality, greater strength, and a lower probability of breakage compared to a laminate with a black band darkening.
