Abstract
The present application relates to a cover for a camshaft and a camshaft carrier assembly. A cover for a camshaft includes a central portion and a first end portion. The first end portion is disposed at a first end of the central portion. The first end portion defines a first end first opening and a first end second opening. The first end first opening extends through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a fastener. The first end first opening is centered on a first end axis extending through the first end portion. The first end second opening extends partially through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a pin. The first end second opening is offset from the first end axis.
Description
Technical Field
The present disclosure relates generally to the field of camshaft carriers.
Background
An internal combustion engine includes a camshaft that operates one or more valves (valves) of the engine. The camshaft includes a cylindrical rod having a series of eccentric lobes (or "cams") along the length of the rod. The cam actuates the valve by pressing against a lift portion of the valve. As the camshaft rotates, the shape of each cam pushes the valve, causing the valve to open and close based on the firing cycle of the engine. The camshaft is driven by the engine crankshaft via a timing belt or chain. The camshaft is held in place by one or more brackets.
Disclosure of Invention
Various embodiments provide a cover (cap) for a camshaft. The cover includes a central portion and a first end portion. The first end portion is disposed at the first end of the central portion. The first end portion defines a first end first opening and a first end second opening. The first end first opening extends through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a fastener. The first end first opening is centered on a first end axis extending through the first end portion. The first end second opening extends partially through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a pin. The first end second opening is offset from the first end axis.
In some embodiments, the central portion defines a channel sized to receive a portion of the camshaft.
In some embodiments, the first end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the first end axis extends through a center of the first end portion.
In some embodiments, the outer edge of the first end portion is substantially flat.
In some embodiments, the cap further comprises a second end portion disposed at a second end of the central portion opposite the first end, wherein the second end portion defines: a second end first opening extending through the second end portion, the second end first opening being centered about a second end axis extending through the second end portion; and a second end second opening extending partially through the second end portion, the second end second opening being offset from the second end axis.
In some embodiments, the second end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the second end axis extends through a center of the second end portion.
Various other embodiments provide a camshaft carrier assembly. The camshaft carrier assembly includes a camshaft carrier body and a camshaft cover. The camshaft carrier body defines a first carrier opening and a second carrier opening. The camshaft cover includes a central portion and a first end portion disposed at a first end of the central portion. The first end portion defines a first end opening and a second end opening. The first end first opening extends through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a fastener. The first end first opening is centered about a first end axis extending through the first end portion and is substantially aligned with the first bracket opening. The first end second opening extends partially through the first end portion and is sized for receiving a pin. The first end second opening is offset from the first end axis and is substantially aligned with the second bracket opening.
Various other embodiments provide a camshaft carrier assembly comprising:
a camshaft carrier body including at least one camshaft support defining a first carrier opening and a second carrier opening; and
a camshaft cover, the camshaft cover comprising:
a central portion and a first end portion disposed at a first end of the central portion, wherein the first end portion defines:
a first end first opening extending through the first end portion and sized for receiving a fastener, the first end first opening being centered about a first end axis extending through the first end portion and substantially aligned with the first bracket opening; and
a first end second opening extending partially through the first end portion and sized for receiving a pin, the first end second opening being offset from the first end axis and substantially aligned with the second bracket opening.
In some embodiments, the at least one camshaft support includes a support center portion and a support first end portion disposed at a first end of the support center portion, wherein the support first end portion defines the first bracket opening and the second bracket opening.
In some embodiments, the central portion defines a channel sized to receive a portion of a camshaft.
In some embodiments, the first end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the first end axis extends through a center of the first end portion.
In some embodiments, the camshaft carrier body further includes a camshaft carrier wall at least partially defining a camshaft opening sized for receiving a camshaft; wherein the outer edge of the camshaft carrier wall defines a plane.
In some embodiments, the outer edge of the first end portion is substantially flat such that the first end portion does not extend beyond the plane.
In some embodiments, the at least one camshaft support further defines a third bracket opening and a fourth bracket opening.
In some embodiments, the camshaft cover further includes a second end portion disposed at a second end of the central portion opposite the first end, wherein the second end portion defines: a second end first opening extending through the second end portion, the second end first opening being centered about a second end axis extending through the second end portion and substantially aligned with the third bracket opening; and a second end second opening extending partially through the second end portion, the second end second opening being offset from the second end axis and substantially aligned with the fourth bracket opening.
In some embodiments, the second end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the second end axis extends through a center of the second end portion.

Detailed Description
Embodiments described herein relate generally to camshaft carrier assemblies. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to a cover for a camshaft carrier. According to various embodiments, a camshaft carrier assembly includes a camshaft cover coupled to a camshaft support. Both the camshaft support and the camshaft cover include a failsafe feature that enables the camshaft cover to be coupled to the camshaft support in a single orientation. The error proofing feature advantageously improves the ease of assembly of the camshaft carrier assembly by enabling the camshaft cover to be positioned correctly relative to the camshaft support.
Before turning to the figures, various embodiments of camshaft carrier assemblies and components thereof are described herein. It should be understood that while individual components are described in detail, these details should be considered as examples only. Furthermore, the details may include variations described herein. Thus, it should be understood that although a single component may be described with respect to an embodiment, any component may be used in any other embodiment described herein unless otherwise specified.
Referring to FIG. 1, a perspective view of a camshaft carrier assembly 100 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. The camshaft carrier assembly 100 includes a camshaft carrier body 102 and one or more camshaft caps 120 (also referred to herein as "caps"). The camshaft carrier body 102 includes a camshaft carrier wall 104. The camshaft carrier wall 104 at least partially defines a camshaft opening 108, the camshaft opening 108 being sized for receiving a camshaft (not shown). The camshaft opening 108 is substantially cylindrical. The camshaft axis 110 extends through the center of the cylindrical shape of the camshaft opening 108.
The camshaft carrier body 102 also includes at least one camshaft support 106, the at least one camshaft support 106 extending outwardly from the camshaft carrier wall 104 and into the camshaft opening 108. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the camshaft carrier body 102 includes seven camshaft supports 106. However, it should be appreciated that the camshaft carrier body 102 may include more or fewer (e.g., at least one) camshaft supports 106. The camshaft support 106 is configured to support a camshaft. The camshaft support 106 is described in more detail herein with reference to FIG. 3.
Each of the one or more camshaft caps 120 is positioned at a respective camshaft support 106. Thus, in the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, camshaft carrier assembly 100 includes seven camshaft caps 120. More specifically, each camshaft cover 120 is coupled to camshaft carrier body 102 at a respective camshaft support 106.
Referring now to FIG. 2, a perspective view of a portion of the camshaft carrier assembly 100 is shown. Camshaft cover 120 includes a central portion 122 and a first end portion 130. The first end portion 130 is disposed at a first end of the central portion 122. The first end portion 130 defines a first end first opening 136, the first end first opening 136 extending through the first end portion 130 and being sized for receiving a fastener 190, the first end first opening 136 being centered about a first end axis 132 (shown in fig. 4) extending through the first end portion 130. The first end portion 130 also defines a first end second opening 138, the first end second opening 138 extending partially through the first end portion 130 and sized for receiving a pin 194, the first end second opening 138 being offset from the first end axis 132 (shown in fig. 4).
The central portion 122 defines an opening or passage 124, the opening or passage 124 being sized for receiving a portion of a camshaft. More specifically, the passage 124 cooperates with the camshaft support 106 to retain the camshaft within the camshaft opening 108.
As shown in fig. 2, the first end portion 130 is sized such that the first end portion 130 does not extend beyond the outer edge of the camshaft carrier wall 104. More specifically, first end portion 130 includes an outer surface 139. The outer surface 139 is substantially flat such that the outer surface 139 extends along a plane 114 defined by the outer edge of the camshaft carrier wall 104. The outer surface 139 does not extend beyond the plane 114.
Camshaft cover 120 also includes a second end portion 140, with second end portion 140 disposed at a second end of central portion 122 opposite first end portion 130.
As shown in fig. 2, a first fastener 190 extends through the camshaft cover 120 at the first end portion 130. A second fastener 192 extends through the camshaft cover 120 at the second end portion 140.
In the exemplary embodiment, camshaft carrier assembly 100 includes a camshaft carrier body 102 and a camshaft cover 120. The camshaft carrier body 102 includes at least one camshaft support 106. The at least one camshaft support 106 defines a first bracket opening 176 and a second bracket opening 178 (shown in FIG. 3). Camshaft cover 120 includes a central portion 122 and a first end portion 130 disposed at a first end of central portion 122. The first end portion 130 defines a first end first opening 136, the first end first opening 136 extending through the first end portion 130 and being sized for receiving a fastener 190. The first end first opening 136 is centered on a first end axis 132 extending through the first end portion 130. The first end first opening 136 is substantially aligned with the first bracket opening 176. The first end portion 130 also defines a first end second opening 138, the first end second opening 138 extending partially through the first end portion 130 and sized for receiving a pin 194. The first end second opening 138 is offset from the first end axis 132 and is substantially aligned with the second bracket opening 178.
Referring now to fig. 3 and 4, a perspective view of a portion of the camshaft carrier assembly 100 and a bottom view of the camshaft cover 120 are shown, respectively, in a disassembled state.
The first end portion 130 is substantially cylindrical in shape. The first end first axis 132 extends through the center of the first end portion 130. The first end second axis 134 is offset from the first end first axis 132 and extends through the first end portion 130.
As shown in fig. 4, the first end portion 130 defines a first end first opening 136 extending through the first end portion 130. The first end first opening 136 is sized for receiving a first fastener 190.
The first end first opening 136 is centered on the first end first axis 132.
The first end portion 130 also defines a first end second opening 138. The first end second opening 138 extends partially through the first end portion 130. The first end second opening 138 is sized for receiving a pin 194. The first end second opening 138 is centered about the first end second axis 134 such that the first end second opening 138 is offset from the first end first axis 132.
Returning to fig. 3, the second end portion 140 is substantially cylindrical in shape. The second end first axis 142 extends through the center of the second end portion 140. The second end second axis 144 is offset from the second end first axis 142 and extends through the second end portion 140.
As shown in fig. 4, the second end portion 140 defines a second end first opening 146. Second end first opening 146 extends through second end portion 140. The second end first opening 146 is sized for receiving the second fastener 192. The second end first opening 146 is centered on the second end first axis 142.
The second end portion 140 also defines a second end second opening 148. The second end second opening 148 extends partially through the second end portion 140. The second end second opening 148 is sized for receiving a pin 196. The second end second opening 148 is centered about the second end second axis 144 such that the second end second opening 148 is offset from the second end first axis 142.
As shown in fig. 3, the camshaft support 106 includes a support center portion 170, a support first end portion 174 disposed at a first end of the support center portion 170, and a support second end portion 180 disposed at a second end of the support center portion 170 opposite the first end. The support center portion 170 defines an opening or passage 172, the opening or passage 172 being sized for receiving a portion of a camshaft. More specifically, channel 172 cooperates with channel 124 defined by central portion 122 of camshaft cover 120 to retain the camshaft within camshaft opening 108. The channels 124 and 172 are substantially semi-circular such that the channels 124 and 172 define a substantially circular opening sized to receive a camshaft.
As shown, the support first end portion 174 defines a first bracket opening 176 and a second bracket opening 178. The first bracket opening 176 is aligned with the first end first axis 132. The first bracket opening 176 is sized for receiving a fastener 190. The fastener 190 extends through the first end first opening 136 and is received by the first bracket opening 176 such that the fastener 190 couples the camshaft cover 120 to the camshaft bracket body 102, or more specifically, to the camshaft support 106.
The second bracket opening 178 is aligned with the first end second axis 134. The second bracket opening 178 is sized for receiving a pin 194. The pin 194 is received by the first end second opening 138 and by the second bracket opening 178 such that the pin 194 aligns the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft bracket body 102, or more specifically, aligns the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft support 106.
Advantageously, the alignment of the first end second opening 138, the second bracket opening 178, and the pin 194 improves the ease of manufacturing the camshaft bracket assembly 100 by aligning the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft bracket body 102. Alignment of the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft carrier body 102 aligns the first end first opening 136 with the first carrier opening 176 such that the fastener 190 is received by both the first end first opening 136 and the first carrier opening 176.
The support member second end portion 180 defines a third bracket opening 182. The third bracket opening 182 is aligned with the second end first axis 142. The third bracket opening 182 is sized for receiving a fastener 192. The fastener 192 extends through the second end first opening 146 and is received by the third bracket opening 182 such that the fastener 192 couples the camshaft cover 120 to the camshaft bracket body 102, or more specifically, to the camshaft support 106.
The support member second end portion 180 defines a fourth bracket opening 184. The fourth bracket opening 184 is aligned with the second end second axis 144. The fourth bracket opening 184 is sized for receiving the pin 196. The pin 196 is received by the second end second opening 148 and by the fourth bracket opening 184 such that the pin 196 aligns the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft bracket body 102, or more specifically, aligns the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft support 106.
Advantageously, the alignment of the second end second opening 148, the fourth bracket opening 184, and the pin 196 improves the ease of manufacturing the camshaft bracket assembly 100 by aligning the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft bracket body 102. Alignment of the camshaft cover 120 relative to the camshaft carrier body 102 aligns the second end first opening 146 with the third carrier opening 182 such that the fastener 192 is received by both the second end first opening 146 and the third carrier opening 182.

Claims (15)
1. A cover for a camshaft, the cover comprising:
a central portion; and
a first end portion disposed at a first end of the central portion, wherein the first end portion defines:
a first end first opening extending through the first end portion and sized for receiving a fastener, the first end first opening centered on a first end axis extending through the first end portion, an
A first end second opening extending partially through the first end portion and sized for receiving a pin, the first end second opening being offset from the first end axis.
2. The cover of claim 1, wherein the central portion defines a channel sized for receiving a portion of the camshaft.
3. The cap of claim 1, wherein the first end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the first end axis extends through a center of the first end portion.
4. A cap according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the outer edge of the first end portion is substantially flat.
5. A cap according to any one of claims 1-3, further comprising a second end portion disposed at a second end of the central portion opposite the first end, wherein the second end portion defines:
a second end first opening extending through the second end portion, the second end first opening being centered about a second end axis extending through the second end portion; and
a second end second opening extending partially through the second end portion, the second end second opening being offset from the second end axis.
6. The cover of claim 5, wherein the second end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the second end axis extends through a center of the second end portion.
7. A camshaft carrier assembly, the camshaft carrier assembly comprising:
a camshaft carrier body including at least one camshaft support defining a first carrier opening and a second carrier opening; and
a camshaft cover, the camshaft cover comprising:
a central portion and a first end portion disposed at a first end of the central portion, wherein the first end portion defines:
a first end first opening extending through the first end portion and sized for receiving a fastener, the first end first opening being centered about a first end axis extending through the first end portion and substantially aligned with the first bracket opening; and
a first end second opening extending partially through the first end portion and sized for receiving a pin, the first end second opening being offset from the first end axis and substantially aligned with the second bracket opening.
8. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 7, wherein the at least one camshaft support includes a support central portion and a support first end portion disposed at a first end of the support central portion, wherein the support first end portion defines the first carrier opening and the second carrier opening.
9. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 7 wherein the central portion defines a channel sized to receive a portion of a camshaft.
10. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 7, wherein the first end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the first end axis extends through a center of the first end portion.
11. The camshaft carrier assembly of any one of claims 7-10 wherein the camshaft carrier body further includes a camshaft carrier wall at least partially defining a camshaft opening sized for receiving a camshaft;
wherein the outer edge of the camshaft carrier wall defines a plane.
12. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 11, wherein an outer edge of the first end portion is substantially flat such that the first end portion does not extend beyond the plane.
13. The camshaft carrier assembly according to any one of claims 7-10 and 12, wherein the at least one camshaft support further defines a third carrier opening and a fourth carrier opening.
14. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 13, wherein the camshaft cover further includes a second end portion disposed at a second end of the central portion opposite the first end, wherein the second end portion defines:
a second end first opening extending through the second end portion, the second end first opening being centered about a second end axis extending through the second end portion and substantially aligned with the third bracket opening; and
a second end second opening extending partially through the second end portion, the second end second opening being offset from the second end axis and substantially aligned with the fourth bracket opening.
15. The camshaft carrier assembly of claim 14, wherein the second end portion is substantially cylindrical such that the second end axis extends through a center of the second end portion.
