Inflatable toys are well known useful tools for keeping children occupied. Their inflatable/deflated adaptability makes these toys not only appealing to children, but also easy to pack and store in the deflated state. In fact, quite a small package can accommodate very large toys when inflated. This benefits both the toy retailer/packer and the end user. Therefore, inflatable toys such as beach balls, inflatable idols and the like are very common toys.

Areas in which this inflatable technology is particularly suitable are large structures or playgrounds. For example, castles and other enclosures are popular with children because such inflatable structures can be designed to be large and provide a soft, wide surface for children to play on/in. The inflatable toy can be designed to allow a child to climb or walk through one or more passages. This is often very attractive to children, especially those who are young. However, in our world of sound and sex, these simple structures can tire children. Simply providing space for children to hide or walk through is no longer high-level entertainment.

Therefore, there is a need for an inflatable playground that can attract children's attention or increase entertainment.

In other embodiments, the module can be made integral with the inflatable body or detachably connected to the inflatable body. In the latter case, the module may be placed in a pocket formed on the inflatable body. The bag may include a folded portion for holding the module in the bag. Additionally, the module can include a speaker and an IR emitter/receiver. In other embodiments, the module may include at least one lamp and/or two infrared emitters/receivers. A vibration detector can also be provided to wake up the circuit upon detection of vibration.

Detailed ways

Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same reference numerals represent the same components, an inflatable children's toy or playground according to an embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIGS. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1-5, the play yard 10 is designed to resemble a puppy or dog and preferably includes a body 12 that can be inflated and deflated. The body is preferably made of a material suitable for inflating properties, such as a polymeric material capable of being stretched. The inflatable properties of the body 12 are preferably such that the playground 10 is larger in the inflated state and more compact in the deflated state.

The body 12 of the playground 10 is preferably designed in the shape of a puppy or dog as described above, thus defining a head 14 flanked by a tunnel portion 16 and a recessed portion 18 . The head may include ear portions 20 and other markings to further artistically represent the dog. Of course, when imitating something else, these components can be very different. Tunnel portion 16 is preferably sized and shaped to allow the passage of children. As shown in FIGS. 1-5 , the tunnel section comprises a series of concentric sections 22 connected to the head 18 on one side and to the inlet 24 on the other side. This design provides better support for children within the tunnel section 16 . Additionally, tunnel portion 16 may include one or more transparent or translucent portions 25 to provide visibility within the tunnel. These allow the child to see the outside, as well as the parent or guardian to see the inside. Finally, the recessed portion 18 is designed to provide a pool-like structure connected to the tunnel portion 16 . In fact, in some embodiments, the recessed portion 18 allows water or other liquids to be stored therein. Similar to the case of the tunnel section 16, the recessed section 18 may include more than one concentric section 26 to provide stability to the section. A floor portion 28 (best shown in FIG. 2 ) may also be provided for storing liquid in the recessed portion 18 . Of course, in designs that are not suitable for storing liquids, this floor portion 28 can be omitted. It is to be noted that each section or subarea of each section of the playground 10 may be inflated independently of other sections or subsections.

When playing, it is preferable for the child to venture boldly through the tunnel portion 16, through the head 14, and into the recessed portion 18. In embodiments where the recessed portion 18 is designed to store water or other liquids, it would be a pleasure to eventually enter the recessed portion 18 from a dry area outside the tunnel portion 16 . Depending on the target age for which the playground 10 is intended, the structure will be sized accordingly. For example, a playground according to the invention designed for toddlers may be smaller in size than for older children. Additionally, as briefly stated above, other playground designs may be provided in accordance with the present invention. In fact, playground 10 can be designed to mimic any object, animal or theme. For example, Figures 17 and 18 show a playground according to another embodiment of the present invention, designed to resemble a duck. Many other aesthetic designs can also be used.

In addition to the useful design of the playground 10 described above, the device may also include a detection module, such as the detection module 30 shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 . A module such as module 30 is preferably used to enhance interest when playing the game field 10 . According to the invention, such a module can provide light and/or sound triggering according to certain actions on the components by the user (child) of the playground 10 . This is discussed in detail below.

As shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, the detection module 30 is a self-contained assembly that preferably includes an on/off switch 32, a speaker 34, and one or more transmitter/receiver combinations 36, among other components. Additionally, as best shown in FIG. 7, module 30 preferably includes a power source, such as a battery (not shown), contained within module 30 by means of a cover 38 or the like. 8 and 9 explain the arrangement of the modules 30 relative to the playground 10 . In particular, the module 30 is preferably housed in a pocket 40 formed in an upper portion of one side of the head 14 . At least one aperture 42 may be provided in the bag 40 so that at least one transmitter/receiver combination 36 of the module 30 may be exposed through the bag. These apertures 42 may be arranged such that the transmitter/receiver combination 36 faces in a certain direction, an example of facing forward is shown in FIG. 9 . Other designs may have the combination 36 facing downwards or may have more than one combination exposed. The fact that the module 30 can comprise more than one combination 36 means that it can be easily adapted to any situation.

Preferably, the module 30 is designed to detect any activity at or near the front of the transmitter/receiver combination 36 . Upon detection of any of these activities, the module preferably plays sound, displays video, or both. For example, as shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 , the module 30 is designed to play music and/or speech based on detecting activity in front of the transmitter/receiver combination 36 . The effective range for the detection of activity by the module 30 is preferably from zero to six inches, but obviously other ranges are possible depending on the combination 36 of the modules used. Thus, when a child normally playing playground 10 enters or exits tunnel portion 16, transmitter/receiver combination 36 preferably detects him and causes the module to play music and/or speech through speaker 34. This necessarily increases the interactivity of the playground 10 and prevents children from getting bored of the playground 10 quickly. The operation of the transmitter/receiver combination 36 is discussed further below.

Another embodiment of a detection module 130 is shown in FIGS. 10-13 . Basically, the module 130 is similar to the module 30 described above, therefore, similar components are given similar reference numbers but are all in the range of 100 plus a few. For example, module 130 includes an on/off switch 132, a speaker 134, two transmitter/receiver combinations 136, and a cover 138 that houses a power source (eg, three "AA" batteries). However, the module 130 also includes a test button 150 , an LED light window 152 and slots 154 formed on the back side of the module 130 . The slots 154 are preferably designed to help keep the module 130 in a package through the use of straps or the like. Likewise, the test button 150 preferably allows a person to test the operation of the module 130 held in the package. Finally, LED light window 152 is designed to provide a visual stimulus upon detection of activity by either combination 136 . Preferably, module 130 includes one or more lights (not shown) that are aimed at window 152 so that upon detection of motion these lights are illuminated. Preferably, the speaker 134 is also enabled to play music and/or speech at the same time. Module 130 is further shown and described in FIGS. 12 and 13 .

FIG. 14 depicts the arrangement of modules 130 in bags 140 . This bag 140 is similar to bag 40 in that it is designed to accommodate modules and may include an aperture 142, but bag 140 preferably also includes a folded portion 144 with an attachment mechanism for attachment to the body of the bag. For example, as shown, the folded portion 144 includes Velcro for attachment to a mating Velcro on the main body of the bag 140 . Of course, other attachment mechanisms could be used, such as snap buttons, zippers, and the like. This design preferably keeps the module 130 in the bag 140 in case it falls out. Accordingly, the module 130 may be placed side by side rather than simply being placed in an over and under position in the bag 140 . Note that in Figure 14 two different arrangements are shown, one sideways and one flat. In various arrangements, the location of the aperture 142 is different to allow proper operation of the transmitter/receiver combination 136 .

Both modules 30 and 130 may have transmitter/receiver combinations placed on any part of them. These arrangements clearly illustrate how particular modules are arranged in the playing field 10 . Additionally, both modules 30 and 130 can be designed to be turned off after a set period of inactivity. For example, if no activity is detected for 30 seconds, modules 30 and/or 130 may enter a sleep mode to conserve power. A vibration detector (not shown) may be provided in the module according to the present invention, so as to wake up the circuit of the module without requiring the user to turn on the power switch again. In this case, any vibration would preferably wake up that particular module. Of course, a simple activity detection can also be designed to wake up the circuit of the module.

Figure 15 shows a typical operation of a transmitter/receiver combination used in conjunction with a module according to the invention. Preferably, an infrared ("IR") emitter and an infrared receiver are housed in combination 36 or 136. When the combination is in active detection mode, the IR emitter preferably sends out a coded IR pulse train (described in FIG. 16) continuously at an angle (see FIG. 15). If a person or some kind of obstacle 50 appears in front of the emitter/receiver combination, an infrared pulse will be reflected to the infrared receiver. In this way, the transmitter/receiver combination will be activated and cause the module 30 or 130 to play a sound and/or display a bright light. Preferably, the emitter/receiver combination is painted black and suitably shrouded such that the emitter and receiver are isolated from any direct optical interference between each other.

Thus, according to the present invention, there is provided a playground 10 designed to be played in or around it, which includes a detection device that plays sound and/or displays visuals upon detection of motion. Clearly, this provides an improvement over other known toys within the children's toy industry. The inclusion of a separate module within the inflatable play yard makes the utility model easy to pack and store. Of course, in some embodiments, a module, such as module 30 or 130, can be made integral with the playground 10 or the like. Various modifications that can be made to the invention described herein will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.

Although the invention has been described herein with reference to specific embodiments, it should be understood that these embodiments merely illustrate the principles and uses of the invention. It should therefore be appreciated that numerous modifications may be made to the embodiments shown and that other arrangements may be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
