Abstract

A mounting kit comprising a player mounting system for carrying and detachably mounting a video player to a vehicle seat; and a display harness system for carrying and detachably mounting a video display unit to a vehicle seat , the video display unit is separate from the video player. The display strap system includes a display case for mounting the video display portion within the display case, and a mounting strap attached to the display case for removably attaching the display case to a vehicle seat. An opening is formed on the bottom side of the display case for fitting the video display portion of the display unit into the display case. The display case also has a holder for removably securing the video display portion within the display case such that the stand portion of the video display unit extends from the display case.

The present invention relates generally to the use of consumer appliances in vehicles and, more particularly, to an installation kit for releasably securing a display device and an electronic signal generating device to a vehicle seat.

Background technique

Video entertainment devices are becoming increasingly popular. VCRs, DVDs, and similar appliances are now commonplace in most homes, especially those with children and teens. These devices typically have a box-shaped housing with multiple plugs for connection to various accessory devices. Typically, these appliances do not have dedicated video display screens and are adapted to connect to conventional TV displays. As such, the portability of these devices is often limited by the video display device to which they are connected. Also, most households have a limited number of televisions, and when one family member uses the television as a video display device, other family members cannot watch traditional television programs. Therefore, there is a need for a small, detachable, and portable video display device, which is suitable for use in electronic video processing devices. Video players, such as DVD or VCD players and VCRs, have this particular need.

And, in order to take advantage of technological advances in making DVD players and other electronic devices completely portable, various carrying systems for portable appliances have been developed. These systems include bags and cases for personal carry, as well as carrying systems used in automobiles. Typical examples of backpack systems include: US Patent 6393745 to Miki, US Patent Application Publication US2003/0029755 to Ho, and US2002/0088726 to Chou, each of which is incorporated herein by reference. Typical examples of automotive systems include: US Patent Application US2002/0105507 to Tranchina, US Patent 6097448 to Perkins, US Patent 5842715 to Jones, US Patent 5395023 to Naymark, US2001/0011664A1 to Meriot, each of which is incorporated herein by reference.

While the prior art includes many methods of portability, the systems cited are generally overly complex and/or do not provide sufficient support for portable appliances, especially in automobiles. The present invention improves the above-mentioned disadvantages of the prior art, and provides a convenient mechanism for fixing a portable electric appliance and a video display unit independent of the portable electric appliance on a vehicle seat without being connected to an additional part of the vehicle.

Contents of the invention

The present invention is an installation kit for detachably fixing a video playing device, such as a DVD player, and/or a video playing unit on a vehicle seat.

The video display unit of the present invention is detachably installed on the video playing device. In a preferred embodiment, the video display unit includes: a video display portion including a viewing surface having a display screen; and a stand portion hingedly mounted on the video display portion. Likewise, the video playback device includes a player shell with at least one display support slot on it. The stand portion is seated in at least one display support slot of the player housing to provide a selectively detachable connection between the player housing and the video display board. And, the rear plate of the video playback device has a release lever, and the release lever includes a locking plate, which cooperates with the matching notch formed in the support part of the video display unit, and firmly connects the video playback device with the support part of the video display unit. Preferably, the release lever is shaped as a deformable cantilever, integrated with and extending along the rear panel of the video playback device, for selectively bending the release lever into the video playback device, so that the locking piece is removed from the video display disengage from the mating notch on the stand portion of the unit, and remove the video display unit from the video playback device. The release lever has a ribbed button surface adapted to be pressed to disengage the locking tab from a mating notch in the standoff portion. The video playback device is adapted to hingeably support the video display unit in a closed position and an open position. The video display unit is detachable from the video playback device and is independently supported by the stand portion on any substantially flat surface.

The mounting kit includes a player mounting system for carrying and securely mounting a video playback device, such as a DVD player, to a vehicle seat, and a display strap system for carrying and removably mounting a video display unit to a vehicle On the seat, the video display unit is separated from the video playback device.

The player mounting system is designed to securely mount video playback devices on the back of vehicle seats. The player mounting system includes a headrest strap that wraps around the upper portion of the seat, while a second strap (bottom strap) wraps around the bottom of the vertical back portion of the seat. A third strap, a cross strap, may be used that extends upwardly from the bottom strap and connects the bottom strap to the housing. The harness preferably has a three-point attachment system comprising first and second connections between each end of the head strap and the shell, and a third connection between the bottom strap and the shell.

The display harness system includes a display case for mounting the video display part in the display case, and a mounting strap mounted on the display case for detachably connecting the display case to the vehicle seat.

The display case has a front side, a rear side and a bottom side. An opening is formed on the bottom side of the display housing for housing the video display portion of the display unit in the display housing. The display case also has a holder for detachably securing the video display portion within the display case such that the support portion of the video display unit protrudes from the display case.

Preferred embodiments of the present invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. For the purposes of the following description, certain terms used in the following description are for convenience only and are not limiting. "Up", "Down", "Left", "Right" indicate directions in the drawings to which reference is made. "Inwardly" and "outwardly" refer to directions toward and away from, respectively, the geometric center of the invention and its indicated portion. However, it should be understood that the invention may assume various other orientations, except as specifically stated to the contrary. Terminology includes the words specifically provided above, derivatives thereof and words of similar meaning.

It should also be understood that the particulars illustrated in the drawings and described in the following description are simply representative embodiments of the gist of the invention. Specific dimensions and other physical characteristics related to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered limiting unless specifically stated otherwise. In addition, the word "a" used in the claims means "at least one".

The accompanying drawings represent a preferred embodiment of the installation kit for fixing the portable video player 5 and the detachable display unit 30 of the video player 5 to the vehicle seat 1 in a detachable (or detachable) manner. The mounting kit of the present invention includes mounting system 71 and display strap system 90 . The installation system 71 shown in FIG. 16 is used for carrying and firmly installing the video playback device 5 on the vehicle seat 1 . Likewise, the display strap system 90 shown in FIGS. 20A-26 is used to carry and detachably install the detachable display unit 30 independent of the video playback device 5 on the vehicle seat 1 .

As shown in FIGS. 18 and 19 , the vehicle seat 1 includes a substantially horizontal seat portion 2 , a backrest portion 3 and a headrest 4 protruding from the backrest portion 3 . Preferably, the mounting system 71 is used to firmly mount the video playback device 5 on the backrest portion 3 of the vehicle seat 1, and the strap system 90 is used to mount the detachable display unit 30 independent of the video playback device 5 on the vehicle seat 1 4 on the headrest.

1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings show a representative embodiment of a video playback device 5 and a separate video display unit 30, wherein the video playback device 5 includes an electronic video playback device such as a digital video disc (DVD) player 10, the video display The unit 30 is detachably attached to the video player 10 . It will be appreciated that other suitable electronic video playback devices, such as video CD (VCD) players, VCRs, video game consoles, etc., are within the scope of the present invention. Video player 5 is described in detail in pending U.S. patent application No.10/864802 filed on June 10, 2004, which is assigned to the assignee of the present invention, and is hereby cited as a reference in the present application middle.

Video player 10 is adapted to hingeably support video display unit 30 between a closed position (shown in FIG. 2 ) and an open position (shown in FIG. 1 ).

The video display unit 30 includes a support part 32 and a video display part 42, the support part 32 is detachably mounted on the video player 10, and the video display part 42 is hingedly mounted on the support part 32, as shown in FIG. 7 .

A video player 10 of a representative embodiment of the present invention, shown in detail in FIGS. 3-6, includes a generally box-shaped housing 12 having a top panel _12T and a bottom panel, a front panel _12F , a rear panel _12R , and opposing side panels. 12 _RS and 12 _LS . The right side panel 12 _RS of the housing 12 has a slot 14 for inserting a digital video fishing boat (DVD), as shown in FIG. 4 . As shown in Fig. 5, the left side panel 12 _LS of the case 12 has an exhaust hole 15, two monitor connection sockets 16, an S video output socket 17, a video output socket 18a, two audio output sockets 18b and a DC/AC adapter (not shown) socket 20. Sockets 17, 18a and 18b form a DVD inserter electrical interface, adapted to be operatively connected to the electrical interface of video display unit 30, and to transfer electrical signals therebetween. The top panel _12T of the housing 12 is substantially flat and includes a plurality of control buttons 22 for operating the DVD player 10 and a magnetic insert 29, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 6 .

Also, the rear panel _12R of the housing 12 has two opposite extensions 24a and 24b, each having an open support slot 25a and 25b for inserting the support portion 32 of the video display unit 30 to support the video display portion 42 .

And, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the rear panel _12R of the housing 12 has a release lever 26 including a locking piece 27, which cooperates with a matching notch formed on the support portion 32 of the video display unit 30 to secure the video playback device 10 It is firmly attached to the stand portion 32 of the video display unit 30 .

The stand portion 32 of the video display unit 30, as shown in FIG. 8, includes a support portion 34 and a pair of hinge portions 36a and 36b formed on opposite ends of the support portion 34. The support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 has a through hole 38 designed to provide access to the button surface 28 of the release lever 26 when the video display unit 30 is mounted on the video player 10, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 10 . The support portion 34 also has a lock notch 35 complementary to the lock tab 27 of the release lever 26 formed on the rear panel _12R of the housing 12 of the video player 10 .

The video display portion 42 of the video display unit 30, as shown in Figure 10, includes a hollow display housing 44, preferably made of a suitable plastic. The display housing 44 houses a display screen 46 . Preferably, display screen 46 is a substantially flat liquid crystal display (LCD). The display housing 44 is also equipped with a pair of built-in stereo speakers 48, located on both sides of the LCD screen 46, for producing stereo sound. Moreover, on the viewing surface 45 of the display housing 44, there are a plurality of (preferably four) elastic pads 50, such as rubber pads, for providing a gap between the video display portion 42 and the player housing when the video display unit 30 is in the closed position. A small gap is formed between the top plates _12T of 12. Also, the display housing 44 includes a magnetic slug 68 that aligns with the magnetic slug 29 on the top plate _12T of the housing 12 when the video display unit 30 is in the closed position. In this way, the magnetic inserts 29 and 68 act as a locking means for holding the video display unit 30 in the closed position.

Display housing 44 also includes various audio and video controls 52 and a pair of stereo headphone jacks 54a and 54b. Display housing 44 may also include other control and integration ports to allow video player 10 to interface with various auxiliary devices.

5, in the display housing 44 of the video display panel 42, the video display unit 30 has an audio/video/power signal port 58 located in the hinged portion 36a of the support portion 32, an S video input socket 60, and a video input socket. 62a, two audio input sockets 62b and a DC/AC adapter (not shown) socket 64. The audio/video/power signal port 58 is adapted to connect to the monitor connection socket 16 of a video player 10 via a cable (not shown). Preferably, a single cable is used for all-in-one connections (video, audio L/R, power, etc.) to increase ease of use, where the video display unit 30 is adapted to operate independently of the video player 10 . Additional audio/video jacks 60, 62a and 62b form the electrical interface of the video display unit 30 and are adapted to operably connect to and transmit electrical signals between the electrical interfaces of the video player 10, providing any video player with independent connections.

As shown in FIGS. 7 and 11, the lower end of the display housing 44 is hingedly mounted on the hinge portions 36a and 36b of the support portion 32 through continuous resistance means. The hinged connection allows the video display portion 42 to rotate at least 180° relative to the stand portion 32 . The lock mechanism includes a cantilevered release lever 26 having a locking tab 27 that cooperates with a lock notch 35 in the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 to form a detachable lock between the video player 10 and the video display unit 30. connect.

As can be better seen from FIGS. 2 and 11, when the video display unit 30 is attached to the video player 10, the opposite end portions of the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 are between the extensions 24a and 24a of the housing 12 of the video player 10. 24b formed in the support grooves 25a and 25b. By simply depressing the ribbed button surface 28 of the release lever 26 with a finger (button surface 28 is accessible through an opening 38 in the support portion 34), the release lever 26 is bent from the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 to the video player. In the casing 12 of 10, the user can easily separate the video display unit 30 from the video player 10. This action disengages the lock tab 27 from the lock notch 35 in the support portion 34 of the seat portion 32 . The video display units 30 may be electronically connected to the video display unit 10 by any method known in the art, such as by using a single cable harness connection through each video display unit 30 and a single audio/video port in the video playback device 10 . Such electrical connections are well known to those of ordinary skill in the art and a detailed description is not necessary. In this way, the audio/video signal is delivered to the video display unit 30 . Video display unit 30 includes conventional circuits and components for displaying video images and broadcast audio. Video display portion 42 includes associated audio and video controls 52 on display housing 44 for adjusting display screen 46 and speaker volume. Such video display portion 42 may include an LCD display. However, it will be appreciated that any display device capable of displaying video signals may be used. A separate power source may be used to power the video display section 42, or a battery pack may be used.

In operation, the user simply inserts the opposite ends of the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 into the support slots 25a and 25b formed in the extensions 24a and 24b of the housing 12 of the video player 10, as shown in FIG. The support portion 34 is sized to be inserted into the support slots 25a and 25b formed in the extensions 24a and 24b of the housing 12 . The front surface of the support portion 34 substantially conforms to a corresponding portion of the rear panel _12R of the player housing 12 so that the two surfaces abut each other when connected. The lock piece 27 of the cantilever release lever 26 protrudes outwardly from the rear plate _12R of the housing 12, so that when the support portion 32 is inserted into the support grooves 25a and 25b, the cantilever release lever 26 is pressed backward until the lock piece 27 is aligned with the corresponding The lock notch 35 fits. When the support portion 34 of the seat portion 32 is fully inserted into the support grooves 25a and 25b, the cantilever release lever 26 springs back due to its elasticity, and the lock piece 27 cooperates with the lock notch 35 . The overall structure provides a snap-fit detachable connection between the video display unit 30 and the video player 10 .

By being hingedly connected between the lower end of the video display part 42 and the support part 32, the video display part 42 can be adjusted and rotated between a closed position and an open position in which the display part 42 is substantially against the video player 10. The top panel 12 _T is in the open position and is suitable for viewing by the user. When the video display portion 42 rests against the top plate _12T of the video player 10, the arrangement of the present invention provides a compact complete portable video player.

As mentioned above, in the rotational (hinged) connection between the support parts 32, the video display part 42 of the video display unit 30 includes continuous resistance means, which requires a critical force to rotate the video display part 42 about the support part 32, This allows the video display portion 42 to be infinitely adjustable in various tilted positions, between the stored position and the open position. Preferably, the video display portion 42 can be rotated over 180°.

In order to release the video display unit 30 from the detached video player 10, the user simply inserts a finger into the through hole 38 of the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32, presses down the ribbed button surface 28 of the release lever 26 with the finger, and causes the The release lever 26 bends away from the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 into the housing 12 of the video player 10 and disengages the locking tab 27 from the corresponding lock notch 35 of the support portion 34 of the stand portion 32 . Then, the video display unit 30 can be simply pulled out from the support grooves 25 a and 25 b in the housing 12 to be separated from the video player 10 . The whole structure forms a detachable but firm connection between the video display unit 30 and the video player 10 , holding the video display unit 30 firmly in the video player 10 .

Also, the present invention allows the video display unit 30 to be detached from the video player 10 and independently supported on any substantially flat surface. As shown in FIG. 15 , stand portion 32 adjusts to an inclined position relative to video display portion 42 such that stand portion 32 independently supports video display portion 42 on substantially flat surface 70 . In other words, the stand portion 32 can act as an independent support for the video display portion 42 of the video display unit 30 when the stand portion 32 is rotated rearwardly away from the viewing surface of the video display portion 42 as shown in FIG. 15 .

Although the invention is described with reference to a DVD player, the invention is equally applicable to other electronic video playback devices, such as CVD and VCR players, video game consoles and other similar processing units that generate electronic video signals. Although structural materials are not described, they may include various compositions satisfying the functions of the present invention.

17-19 show the mounting system 71 of the present invention installed on the vehicle seat 1 . Mounting system 71 is disclosed in detail in co-pending US patent application Ser. No. 10/673,632, filed September 30, 2003, assigned to the assignee of the present invention, and incorporated herein by reference for the present application.

The mounting system 71 includes a bag 72 for holding the video playback device 5 and a bag strap system for firmly fixing the video playback device 5 on the backrest portion 3 of the vehicle seat 1 . The bag harness system includes a headrest strap 73 for securing the bag 72 to the headrest 4 of the vehicle seat 1 , and a bottom strap 74 for wrapping around the bottom of the backrest portion 3 of the vehicle seat 1 . Bottom strap 74 is connected to bag 72 by cross strap 75 . The cross strap 75 keeps the bag 72 in a central position and ensures that the bag 72 is firmly fixed, preventing relative movement between the seat 1 and the portable video player 5 .

As can be better seen from FIGS. 17-19 , the cross strap 75 extends between the back portion 3 and the seat portion 2 of the seat 1 and is connected to the bottom strap 74 at the front side of the seat 1 by a sliding strap loop 78 . Sliding strap loops 78 allow the connection between the cross strap 75 and the bottom strap 74 to be adjusted to suit the width of the seat 1 . The sliding strap loop 78 also allows the cross strap 75 to be positioned at any horizontal position on the base strap 74 .

The opposite end of the cross strap 75 is connected to the bag 72 . Bag 72 includes any type of attachment hardware known in the art, but a D-ring 79 is preferred. The end of the cross strap 75 used to attach the D-ring 79 of the bag has a suitable attachment joint, preferably a latch spring clasp 80 . The latch buckle 80 hooks into the D-ring 79 to form a secure connection between the cross strap 75 and the bag 72 , while the cross strap 75 functionally secures the secure connection between the bottom strap 74 and the bag 72 .

At the midpoint of the cross strap 75 there is an adjustment mechanism 81 which allows adjustment of the length of the cross strap to accommodate different seat types. The headrest strap 73 includes a similar adjustment mechanism 85 that allows the length of the headrest strap 73 to be adjusted. One end of the bottom strap 74 also has an adjustment mechanism 82 that allows the length of the bottom strap to be adjusted. While the adjustment mechanisms 81, 82, 85 may be of any type known in the art, a sliding buckle mechanism is preferred.

Similar to the connection point between the cross strap 75 and the pocket 72, the connection system between the pocket 72 and the headrest strap 73 is also designed to be strong and convenient. The attachment system may be of any type known in the art, but a D-ring and pin spring clasp system is preferred. As better seen in FIG. 1 , the bag 72 has two D-ring type joints 83 located on the top surface of the bag 72 and the headrest strap 73 has two latch snap rings 84 located at each end of the strap 73 . The latch snap ring 84 hooks into the D-ring 83 to form a secure connection between the headband 73 and the bag 72 .

For the reasons described above, it will be apparent that the present invention provides an improved system for securely and effectively securing a bag containing portable electronics in the interior of an automobile. The present invention includes a three-point attachment system that allows quick disassembly of the associated bag and facilitates disassembly at any time.

Various changes and alternative embodiments will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art. For example, although only a bucket seat is shown in the drawings, the bottom strap 74 could be lengthened to accommodate a conventional bench-type seat. Likewise, the bottom strap 74 described above encircling the bottom of the backrest portion 3 may also encircle the seat portion 2 of the seat 1 or a vertical support (not shown) that secures the seat 1 to the vehicle floor. Depending on the application, the bottom strap 74 can be omitted entirely and the cross strap 75 can be attached directly to the seat component, or to an anchor support on the floor. The cross strap 75 may also be omitted entirely, with the head strap 73 becoming a single point of attachment and used alone or with at least one cross strap. Additionally, additional straps can be added to form the preferred three-strap embodiment to further stabilize the bag.

Likewise, the headrest strap 73 can be attached to the ceiling or another anchor to function as the support pocket 72 . The headrest strap 73 can also wrap around the headrest and seat upper 4 (instead of just one), and the bottom strap 74 can wrap around two separate seats, positioning the bag 72 between the seats 1 . In this position, the bottom strap 74 may wrap around the console, or be attached to another anchoring portion, instead of wrapping around the seat 1 .

Although the present invention has been described above as mounting a portable electronic device on a car seat, the present invention may mount a portable electronic device on any type of seat, including a stationary (non-vehicle) seat, an airplane seat, a train seat, a ship seat, etc. The present invention can also be mounted on stationary furniture, or any other object or feature capable of supporting a bag.

Although materials of construction are not described, they may include any type of material that can perform some of the functions described above. For example, bag 72 may comprise a relatively soft material such as nylon, fabric, vinyl, leather, rubber, soft plastic, etc., or bag 72 may be a hard case comprising metal, fiberglass, hard plastic, or similar material. Also, if the design of the portable electronic device includes connection hardware, a "pocket" according to the lack of convenience is also within the scope of the present invention. The straps described in this invention may be elastic or inelastic, and may comprise nylon, fabric, vinyl, leather, rubber, plastic, or any other material capable of performing this function. Likewise, as noted above, the serial mechanism and hardware may be of any type known in the art. Such changes are not to be regarded as a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention, all such changes being obvious to one of ordinary skill in the art are therefore included within the scope of the following claims.
