Description

Air freshening device and method

The present invention relates generally to air freshening devices and the like.

Background technique

Air freshening devices are common devices used to improve and/or alter the olfactory properties of an environment. Such environments include bathrooms or lavatories, vehicles, cabinets, drawers, and the like. Such air freshening devices typically include aesthetically pleasing fragrances, such as floral fragrances, fruity fragrances, and the like.

One common type of air freshening device is a two-dimensional card of paper fibers that encloses the scent in a clear plastic wrapper. The cover is pierced to form an opening through which a portion of the refreshing device protrudes to release the fragrance. The air freshening device includes a cord or rubber band forming a loop for suspending the air freshening device. Such air freshening devices are commonly used in vehicles. One drawback of such air freshening devices is that the card is wet and may leak or run off, leaving stains on other surfaces such as the dashboard. The plastic cover and hanging loop prevent the card from coming into contact with other surfaces. Another drawback of such air freshening devices is that they are aesthetically unpleasing. Another drawback of such air freshening devices is that they have a more intense and immediate fragrance release, thus releasing most of the fragrance during the first few days of use.

Another common type of air freshening device has a disc-shaped housing or canister with a scented disc or gel inside. The case includes adhesive tape for sticking or adhering the case to a surface. One drawback of such air freshening devices is that the removal of the shell often leaves an adhesive residue on the surface, which is aesthetically unpleasing. Additionally, fragrances may leak and damage surfaces.

Some of the drawbacks of common air freshening devices include: 1) the fragrance fades quickly and lacks persistence; 2) non-linear or inconsistent fragrance release over time; and 3) the risk of staining. Some air fresheners dissipate fragrance too quickly, losing effectiveness over time, not as long as desired. Some air fresheners dissipate the fragrance quickly or quickly when turned on, then release the fragrance slowly or very little. Some air fresheners include materials that can leak and contaminate.

Another drawback of some air freshening devices is that they include non-solid and non-liquid materials, or gel-like materials, which must be contained in some type of container because the gel is flowable. The material can dry out and crack over time, giving it an aesthetically unpleasing appearance. Also, the fragrance may leak and mar the surface.

The present invention provides an air freshening device having fragrance dispersed within a flexible and resilient polymer matrix. The polymer matrix is compressible under an applied force and returns to substantially its original configuration after the applied force is removed. The fragrance is able to diffuse from the substrate into the surrounding air. According to one aspect of the invention, the polymer matrix may be a bonded elastomer having a self-supporting three-dimensional shape independent of supports. According to another aspect of the invention, the air freshening device may have sticky or sticky attachment surfaces for contacting and clinging to a support surface by mechanical or specific attachment.

Detailed ways

Reference will now be made to the exemplary embodiments illustrated in the drawings, and specific language is used herein to describe the same. It should however be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended. Variations and further improvements of the features of the invention presented herein, as well as other applications of the principles of the invention presented herein, may be made by those skilled in the art pertinent to this disclosure, and are to be considered within the scope of the invention Inside.

As shown in Figures 1-5, there is shown an air freshening device or fragrance device generally indicated at 10 according to the present invention for providing a desired and/or aesthetically pleasing fragrance, aroma, fragrance or neutralizer. Air freshening devices are one example of an area that would benefit from the present invention. The air freshening device 10 can be used in bathrooms, washrooms, vehicles, offices, bedrooms and the like. Desirable aromas may include, for example, floral, fruity, vanilla, berry, rosin, and the like. According to one aspect of the present invention, the air freshening device 10 may comprise a flexible and elastic polymer matrix, such as a polymer gel. The polymer matrix can be elastic and stick together. Thus, the polymer matrix can be compressed under an applied force and can return substantially to its original configuration after the applied force is removed. It has been found that polymer gels provide desirable aesthetics, flexibility, long life, substantially constant fragrance release, and leak resistance. According to another aspect of the present invention, the polymer gel may have a support-free self-supporting three-dimensional shape that does not substantially change upon release of the fragrance. According to another aspect of the present invention, the air freshening device 10 can be gripped or attached to a surface 14 without the need for mechanical fasteners or additional chemical adhesives. Thus, the attachment between the air freshening device and the surface is mainly by mechanical and/or specific attachment. Surface 14 may include a windshield, an instrument panel, a computer monitor, glass windows, mirrors, and the like.

The air freshening device 10 includes a fragrance portion 18 for providing a desired fragrance indicated by arrow 20 . The fragrance section 18 may include a carrier material 22 in which is dispersed a fragrance of a desired fragrance. The term "fragrance" is used broadly herein to denote a material having a perceptible or smelling fragrance, or even a neutralizing agent. The fragrance may be an identifiable odor to cover other odors, or a neutralizer to eliminate odors or provide fresh air. The fragrance spreads or diffuses from the carrier material 22 into the air or atmosphere where it can be perceived or can provide a detectable fragrance. The fragrance is believed to migrate or diffuse through and out of the carrier material or gel. Fragrances may be highly volatile, or highly volatile, and capable of evaporating or volatilizing at low temperatures. Fragrances may include scented oils. For example, suitable flavors may include pine, berry, vanilla, apple, coconut, cherry, pina colada, and the like.

Fragrance portion 18 and/or carrier material 22 may comprise a polymeric material, such as a polymeric gel 26 forming a polymeric matrix. The polymer matrix and/or polymer gel 26 may be elastic and cohesive. Thus, the polymer matrix is elastically deformable under normal conditions. The polymer matrix may be flexible and elastic such that the matrix or gel can compress under an applied force (42 in FIG. 5 ), but return substantially to its original state after the applied force is removed. configuration. The polymer gel 26, or polymer matrix, can have a self-supporting three-dimensional shape independent of supports. Thus, the polymer gel or polymer matrix may be sufficiently firm or strong to support or maintain its shape in a support-free manner without the need for a container. The three-dimensional shape can be any desired shape. The polymer gel 26 can be thought of as a solid material that is elastic and sticks together, being flexible and deformable, but not flowable. Accordingly, the polymer gel 26 may have a sufficiently high molecular weight, and/or a sufficiently high viscosity that it is a non-flowable gel. Additionally, the polymer gel 26 may be considered stable. Thus, the polymer gel is bendable, but substantially maintains its shape. A polymer matrix or polymer gel may behave as a glassy polymeric material substantially free of macroscopic flow. The polymeric material can have a glass transition temperature greater than about 110°F. The polymer gel 26 maintains its gel-like properties over time, does not dry out or crack, and thus does not harden or become brittle.

In one embodiment, polymer gel 26 may comprise a polyurethane material or may be a polyurethane gel. The gel can be formed by combining a polyurethane material with a fragrance oil. Surprisingly, it has been found that this combination provides the desired fragrance without staining or leaking on the surface in large quantities. In addition, fragrance portion 18 does not undergo visually detectable physical changes, such as drying or cracking. Thus, the fragrance department remains aesthetically pleasing.

In some embodiments, fragrance oils and polymerizable monomers may be combined with optional initiators or other reactants. Isocyanate reactive polymers have shown good results in combination with the present invention. For example, polymer gels and fragrances can be urethane polymerization products of fragrance oils combined with polyether polyols and then with diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymers. Thus, in some embodiments, the fragrance can be a fragrance oil that participates in a polymerization reaction between the polymerization reactants. For example, essential oils such as terpenes and the like can be mixed with, or even replace some of, the polymeric reactants. Without being bound by any particular theory, it is conceivable that at least partial replacement of mineral oil and/or polyol with scented oils, such as those listed herein, will result in at least some reduction or elimination of residues in the devices of the present invention. Other suitable isocyanates may include, but are not limited to, tolylene diisocyanate, methylene diphenyl isocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, prepolymers thereof, and the like. Those skilled in the art will recognize a variety of other isocyanate-reactive polymers, ie, polyurethanes, suitable for use in conjunction with the present invention.

Alternatively, the polymer gel 26 may comprise silicone, diffusion polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polymer encapsulated fragrance delivery platforms (concentrated fragrances) (PolyIFF®), thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), polypropylene, ethylene/methacrylic acid (E/MAA) copolymer in which the MAA groups have been partially neutralized with lithium ions (Surlyn® Dupont) etc. .

As a general guideline, polymer gel 26 may be formed from elastomers including, but not limited to, urethanes (including polyethers and polyether polyol/isocyanate polymerization products), polyacrylates, polybutadiene , Ethylene Propylene Elastomer, Silicone, Natural and Synthetic Rubber, Styrene/Butadiene Block Copolymer, etc. In some embodiments, the polymer gel can be formed from a thermoplastic elastomer. The thermoplastic elastomer may be a block copolymer such as polyurethane, polyamide, copolyester and styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer. Other thermoplastic elastomers may be elastomer/thermoplastic blends such as ethylene-propylene-diene monomer in an isotactic polypropylene phase or nitrile rubber dispersed in a PVC phase. As used herein, "thermoplastic elastomer" refers to an elastomer that can be heated and processed like thermoplastic materials. In particular, thermoplastic elastomers can be heated to a molten or flowable state and then cooled, resulting in reformation of the crosslinks and subsequent bonding without major changes in mechanical properties such as strength, flexural modulus, modulus of elasticity, etc.

As used herein, "elastomeric polymer" and "elastomer" are used interchangeably to refer to a polymeric material that is mechanically deformable and returns to its original shape after release. Elastomers that stick together are also non-flowable at or near room temperature. Additionally, "adhesive" and "tacky" refer to the property of a polymeric material to impart adhesion to most surfaces without losing the stickiness of the polymer. Typically, the removal of the elastomeric polymer matrix with the easy-adhesive attachment surface from the substrate does not result in large deformations, including temporary deformations, during flexing of the elastomer and/or the attachment surface. The easy-adhesive attachment surface can be provided directly through the polymer matrix, or in a separate layer as discussed in more detail herein. Attachment can occur via mechanical attachment or specific attachment. Specific attachments refer to attachments in which secondary intermolecular forces, ie, non-covalent bonds, predominate or entirely, although some covalent bonds may be formed.

The polymer gel 26 is freestanding and self-supporting, yet it is flexible and elastic. Thus, fragrance portion 18 and carrier material 22 may form a pliable and elastic structure or matrix that is selectively deformable and capable of returning to a substantially three-dimensional shape. Furthermore, the carrier material 22 and the polymer gel 26 are light-transmissive in an at least translucent manner, as will be explained in more detail below.

The air freshening device 10 may also include an attachment, grip, or base 30 disposed between the fragrance portion 18 and the surface 14 . Accordingly, the attachment portion 30 may act as a barrier between the fragrance portion 18 and the surface 14 to prevent potential contact of the fragrance with the surface and protect the surface. The air freshening device 10 or attachment 30 has a lower surface 34 that is disposed on and grips the surface 14 . Lower surface 34 may be "sticky" such that air freshening device 10 or lower surface 34 tends to rub against surface 14 in a frictional manner, as opposed to chemical or adhesive means, and without the use of mechanical fasteners. Lower surface 34 may be flat or substantially flat to provide a greater surface area against surface 14 . Alternatively, lower surface 34 may be contoured or may include notches to reduce surface area to facilitate removal of the device from surface 14 .

Attachment portion 30 may include pad 38, which may be composed of or include a material that provides "sticky," "tacky," or frictional properties. For example, pad 38 may comprise a molded polyurethane material. It has been found that the polyurethane material provides tacky or tacky properties that remain set on the surface. Furthermore, it has been found that such polyurethane materials can generally be disposed on surface 14 without damaging or chemically interfering with the material of many surfaces, such as a vehicle fascia. It should be appreciated that many surfaces, such as vehicle dashboards, have finished surfaces configured to be aesthetically pleasing and attractive. These surfaces are formed of plastic or leather materials and are expensive to replace or repair. It should also be understood that some surfaces are subjected to extreme conditions, such as heat and sunlight. It has been found that the polyurethane material generally adheres to the surface 14 without chemically reacting with or damaging the material of the surface. The polyurethane material of attachment portion 30 forms a temporary, non-chemical bond with surface 14 . The air freshening device 10 or the attachment 30 can be removed from the surface 14 without leaving any residue or damaging the air freshening device 10 . In this way, the air freshening device 10 can be easily moved to any position desired by the user. Since the air freshener or pad comprises polyurethane material, it can be easily washed with soap and water and still retain its stickiness, allowing it to be reused. The fragrance portion 18 may be formed or disposed on the liner 38 or the attachment portion 30 and may protrude from the liner or the attachment portion.

The attachment portion 30 allows the air freshening device 10 to be positioned at a desired location and even relocated as needed. For example, the air freshener can be relocated to be located in sunlight, near a vent, or at a higher location for ease or optimal fragrance release. Leaving the gel in the sun heats the gel and is believed to increase fragrance release. The air flow from the vents can carry the scent across the area, also increasing the scent release. The aroma or scent is considered heavier than air. Therefore, locating the air freshener at a higher position increases travel and fragrance diffusion. The air freshening device may be positioned to avoid contact with other objects, such as clothes in a cabinet, to avoid contamination. In addition, the air freshener can be located in a safe place in the vehicle so that it does not obstruct the driver's view.

Fragrance portion 18 and attachment portion 30, or carrier material 22 and liner 38, may form a pliable and resilient structure capable of being selectively deformed and capable of returning substantially to its original shape or configuration. It is believed that selectively extruding the carrier material may temporarily result in a greater amount of fragrance diffusion. Thus, the user can selectively deform the carrier material, as indicated by arrow 42 in FIG. 5, when greater fragrance is desired.

The shape and size of the fragrance portion 18 can be configured to determine the amount of fragrance released. For example, the fragrance portion 18 may have a shape that maximizes or controls the surface through which the fragrance diffuses. Fragrance portion 18 may be bulbous, hemispherical, hemispherical, teardrop, oval, rectangular, or the like. Accordingly, the attachment portion 30 may have a shape or profile that matches the shape of the fragrance portion. In addition, the materials and amounts of the flavor and fragrance components can be varied to determine the flavor release. It should be understood that the shape and design of the fragrance section may vary. For example, the shape of the air freshening device or its fragrance portion can resemble animals, flowers, stars, faces, geckos, and the like. Additionally, the air freshening means may include means to increase the surface area of the fragrance portion or carrier material, eg including slits, gaps, grooves, notches, dimples, protrusions, fins, ribs, and the like. For example, a plurality of alternating slots 46 and fins or ribs 50 may be formed in fragrance portion 18, carrier material 22, or polymer gel. Slots 46 may extend into the interior of the carrier material and/or fins or ribs 50 may protrude from the carrier material.

The slits 46 may be sized such that they terminate before the liner 38 so that there is a portion 54 of the fragrance portion that remains continuous. It has been found that providing the flavor portion with a continuous structure prevents the fins 50 from tearing apart. The bottom of the slit may be curved to reduce stress concentrations and prevent tearing.

The slot 46 can be used to receive and retain an item or item 56 as shown in FIG. 15 . For example, the item or items may include memos, business cards, instructions, and the like. Therefore, this fragrance device can be used to keep instructions while driving. Alternatively, the fragrance device may be formed or configured to hold other items, such as nose bridges for eyeglasses or sunglasses, compact discs (CDs), and the like.

A barrier layer 58 may be provided between the fragrance portion 18 and the attachment portion 30 , or between the carrier material 22 and the liner 38 . The barrier layer 58 may be a layer of heat and oil resistant material such as a sheet of nylon, TPU, polyester or polypropylene, or other synthetic material. The barrier layer 58 prevents the fragrance or fragrance oil from migrating, leaking or soaking into the liner 38 to reach the surface 14 . Thus, the attachment 30 or liner 38, and the barrier layer 58 prevent any contamination of the surface 14 due to leakage of fragrance oil therethrough. However, it has been found that fragrance oils surprisingly do not leak and/or cause staining from the fragrance section. However, it is believed that the polyurethane material of the attachment portion 30 or pad 38 may be susceptible to leaching depending on the fragrance oil used. Thus, barrier layer 58 is intended to prevent such leaching. Barrier layer 58 may be smaller than attachment portion 30 and fragrance portion 18 to leave peripheral attachment portion 25 extending around its perimeter so that fragrance portion 18 may be directly attached to attachment portion 30 .

The air freshening device 10 includes an attachment 30 or pad 38, which may be flexible and bendable to conform to the curve or details of the curved surface 14b, as shown in FIG. Attachment 30 or pad 38 may also have a flat configuration and be used on a flat surface. The air freshening device 10 may have a backing or release layer that prevents or prevents the liner 38 from sticking to or against any packaging or packaging of the air freshening device. The release layer may include indicia thereon, such as instructions for the use and care of the air freshening device. The release layer may protrude beyond the periphery of the liner 38, for example with protrusions, to facilitate removal of the release layer from the air freshening device. A removable wrap can be formed around the air freshening device to protect the air freshening device before use. The packaging and backing layer can be removed prior to placing the air freshening device on a surface.

The air freshening device 10 may include indicia 62 ( FIG. 2 ) disposed on an outer surface of the air freshening device 10 or fragrance portion 18 . Indicia 62 may include artwork, logos, advertisements, instructions, branding, trademarks, and the like. Indicia 62 may be formed by printing on the exterior surface, or molded into the interior of the exterior surface material, or the like.

As mentioned above, the air freshening device 10, the fragrance portion 18 or the gel may be light-transmissive at least in a transparent manner. Thus, the perfume active gel can be transparent or translucent. Indicia 66 (FIG. 1) may be positioned below or behind the fragrance portion 18 and be visible through the fragrance portion. Thus, fragrance portion 18 may protect indicia 66 from abrasion. Additionally, the use of translucent or transparent gel materials and the shape of the fragrance portion can provide a unique visual appearance. Likewise, the sign can be a logo, advertisement, instruction, brand, trademark, etc.

A light color may be provided behind the fragrance portion 18 or carrier material 22 to give a translucent or transparent material a luminescent or brighter appearance. For example, barrier layer 58 may have a light color, such as white.

The air freshening device 10 can be used as a promotional device for promoting products or services. For example, indicia 62 and/or 66 may include logos or trademarks for products, services, businesses, and the like. A method for utilizing an air freshening device and/or for advertising includes providing the air freshening device with indicia indicating advertising on or within the air freshening device. This air freshening device 10 can be presented as a publicity item. The user can then mount such an air freshening device 10 on, for example, his or her car, so that the indicia is located where it is often visible.

The methods of using the air freshening device 10 described above include removing the air freshening device 10 from any packaging, and/or removing any backing layer from the liner. The air freshening device 10 may be mounted to the surface by placing the cushion 38 against the surface 14 such that the cushion adheres to the surface. Surface 14 may be any desired surface, such as the interior surface of an automotive window, an automotive dashboard, a bathroom mirror, and the like. Fragrance from the fragrance portion 18 or the polymer gel may diffuse or permeate from the fragrance portion or the polymer gel. The air freshening device 10 may be placed in a location exposed to heat and/or sunlight, such as a car windshield or dashboard. Heat from sunlight or heat vents facilitates the release of fragrance from the fragrance unit. Additionally, air flow from heat or vents aids in the diffusion of fragrances. Additionally, the polymer gel of the air freshening device 10 or fragrance portion 18 may be flexible and squeezeable, causing the fragrance portion or gel to deform and release the fragrance. This pressure can cause the aromas to mix and move to the surface of the fragrance section.

Referring to Figures 6 and 7, a method of providing an air freshening device is shown. The method involves compounding the fragrance with a polymer matrix, such as a polymer gel. The polymeric material or polyurethane can be compounded with fragrance oil. In some embodiments, the scent oil can cause the polymeric material to gel. For example, the polymer matrix or polymer gel may be the polymerization product of fragrance oil, polyether polyol, and diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymer, or other polymerization reactants may be used. Fragrance oils can be combined with polyether polyols. Diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymers can be combined with polyether polyols and fragrance oils to form polymer gels. For example, rosin oil can be combined with polyether polyol such that the polyether polyol contains about 40% rosin oil content. The polyether polyol (with 40% retinol content) can be added to the diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymer in a ratio of 2:1 or 2 parts polyol to 1 part prepolymer.

The polymer gel is structured into a desired shape. For example, material 70 of fragrance portion 18, such as a polymer gel, may be injected into mold 74 having a mold cavity formed into a desired shape. In addition, a liner can be provided for the air freshening device. The material 76 of the liner 38 may be cast over the material of the entire fragrance section. Pouring one material onto another enables the two materials to bond or adhere to each other. Alternatively, the two parts can be molded separately and joined with an adhesive. The barrier layer can be placed prior to casting one material over the other. Furthermore, the device or parts thereof can be manufactured by injection moulding.

It should be understood that the air freshening device 10 can be configured or formed as various appearances of different objects. The shape or configuration of fragrance device 10 may provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance. For example, the shape and appearance of the fragrance device can be substantially different from conventional air freshening devices. Other air freshening devices often have a utilitarian appearance, such as a jug or canister, while some have an appearance associated with the air freshening device. Accordingly, the air freshening device 10 of the present invention may have a shape and appearance not normally associated with an air freshening device. For example, the air freshening device 10 may have the general appearance and shape of an insect or bug, as shown in the figures. Various surface treatments, such as ribs or slits, can be added to the appearance, for example by adding narrow strips or the like. In addition, the air freshener or carrier material can have a color that adds to the appearance. It should be understood that other shapes or appearances are also possible. For example, the air freshening device can be configured to blend with the environment in which it is used. For example, the fragrance device may be formed or configured to look like a button blended with a dashboard. Alternatively, the shape, size and color of the air freshening device can be prominent for use as a promotional device or advertisement. For example, the shape of the air freshening device may be a car manufacturer's logo.

Additionally, one or more air freshening devices may be provided as collectibles. For example, the air freshening device may be formed, constructed, or printed to indicate commemorative events, such as business anniversaries, holidays, and the like. As another example, a family or group of multiple different air freshening devices may be provided, each having a different size, shape and/or color, as shown in FIG. 16 . As another example, a plurality of different air freshening devices may have different shapes that fit together or cooperate with each other to form another object, such as a flower, etc., as shown in FIG. 17 . The air freshening device 78 may include cooperating protrusions 78b and recesses 78c such that the air freshening devices may fit together to form another object or pattern.

As mentioned above, air freshening devices can have various markings. Such indicia can be molded or printed on the top or fragrance portion of the air freshening device. The fragrance portion or gel can be translucent or transparent and the indicia can be placed on top of the barrier or liner. Thereby, the marking is visible through the fragrance portion or gel. The air freshening device may be placed eg on a windshield so that the fragrance portion or gel is exposed to light or heat when light shines through the fragrance portion or gel. The liner and barrier layer can also be translucent or transparent so that the entire air freshening device can be translucent or transparent so that light can shine through the entire air freshening device. As noted above, a barrier layer 58 or other reflective material may be provided behind or under the fragrance portion or gel to reflect light.

Additionally, a phosphorescent material may be provided in the base or in the fragrance portion so that the air freshening device or parts thereof are luminescent or luminescent. Additionally, indicia may include phosphorescent materials. Furthermore, another material may be added to the fragrance portion or gel such that the fragrance portion or gel changes color due to changes in temperature or light. For example, a fragrance section or gel can be one color in daylight and another color in dark or darker conditions.

Additionally, the air freshening device may include an end-of-life indicator indicating when the air freshening device should be replaced. The useful life of the fragrance device may vary and may be a typical period of time, eg 30 days. For example, an air freshener or fragrance section may include materials that change color or other characteristics over time. For example, an air freshener or fragrance section can change from translucent or transparent to opaque. Alternatively, the air freshener or fragrance section can be changed from opaque to translucent or transparent. Indicia such as "replacement time" can be placed on the underside of the fragrance section such that the indicia becomes visible over time. Alternatively, the air freshener or fragrance section can change from one color to another.

Additionally, the air freshening device is sized to be non-clogging and may be formed from non-toxic materials. Additionally, the air freshening device, or portions thereof, may include bitter-tasting materials to discourage an individual from placing the device in their mouth.

Referring to Figure 8, there is shown another fragrance or air freshening device 10b which is similar in many respects to the air freshening device described above. The air freshening device 10b includes a carrier material 22b similar to that described above, such as a polymer matrix or a polymer gel with scented oils therein. The air freshening device 10b may also include a suspension means 80, such as a cord, thread, clip, etc., from which to suspend or suspend the carrier material 22b or polymer gel. As noted above, polyurethane gels have been found to be able to substantially maintain their shape. Additionally, it has been found that the fragrance oil surprisingly does not leak from the polymer gel and/or stain surfaces. Thus, the air freshening device 10b can be hung or hung as desired.

Referring to Figures 9-11, there is shown another fragrance or air freshening device 10c which is similar in many respects to the air freshening device described above. Similar to that described above, the fragrance portion 18c may include a carrier material 22c and the base 30c may include a tray 90 . Similar to that described above, the carrier material 22c may be a polyurethane gel with scented oil. Alternatively, the carrier material may comprise scented gypsum. Tray 90 may include a depression or notch 94 in its interior formed by a peripheral lip 96 extending around the tray. Tray 90 may be formed from nylon and may act as a barrier between fragrance portion 18c or carrier material 22c and surface 14 . Attachment means may be provided at the bottom of the tray 90 to attach or secure the tray to the surface 14 . As noted above, the attachment means may include polyurethane material 98 that frictionally grips surface 14 . Other attachment means may also be used including, for example, adhesives, tapes, hook and loop type fasteners, and the like.

Buttons 102 may be used to secure fragrance portion 18c or carrier material 22c to tray 90 and/or to provide viewing surface 104 . The viewing surface 104 may be formed on the proximal end of the shaft and may be formed on an enlarged head capable of receiving a marker thereon. The mark includes signs, advertisements, instructions for use, warnings, etc.

The button 102 may include a shaft 108 extending through an aperture or hole 112 in the fragrance portion 18c or carrier material 22c. The distal end 116 of the shaft 108 may be secured to the tray 90 , eg, in the recess 118 , by suitable means, including sonic welding, press fit, mating screw threads, snap fit, or the like. Button 102 may be permanently or temporarily secured to fragrance portion 18c or carrier material 22c. The whole air freshening device can be detachable, or the fragrance part 18c can be removed and replaced.

The air freshening device may be round or rectangular and may have a partial bulbous or partial spherical shape. The fragrance portion 18c or carrier material 22c may include a notch or recess 122 that receives the button 102 or its head. Thus, the button or head may be flush or substantially flush with the fragrance portion 18c.

Referring to Fig. 12, another air freshening device 10d is shown, which is similar in many respects to the above-mentioned air freshening device. The air freshening device 1Od may be configured to maximize or control the amount of fragrance diffused. The fragrance portion 18d or carrier material 22d may have a hollow interior or cavity 130 with an inner surface to maximize the surface area of the fragrance portion 18d or carrier material 22d to increase the amount of fragrance released. Additionally, internal ribs or fins 134, and/or grooves or grooves may be formed within the fragrance portion 18d or carrier material 22d. A gap 138 may be formed between the fragrance portion 18d and the head of the button 102d. The gap 138 may extend into the cavity 130 . Thereby, fragrance can be released from the hollow interior through the gap.

Button 102d may be adjustably coupled to tray 90d and selectively movable relative to the tray. For example, button 102d may be threadedly coupled to tray 90d by mating screws. Alternatively, button 102d may snap between two or more positions. Thus, the button 102d can be selectively positioned relative to the tray and the size of the gap 138 can be selectively adjusted to selectively control the amount of fragrance released.

Referring to Figure 14, the carrier material or polymer gel of the present invention can dissipate at a substantially constant rate, or have a substantially constant or linear fragrance release over time. Fragrance release can be determined by measuring the weight of the device over time. As the fragrance is released, the fragrance diffuses outwardly from the carrier material, causing the weight of the carrier material to decrease. As shown in FIG. 14 , the flavor release or weight loss (weight loss) extends substantially linearly over time, represented by solid line 150 . The carrier material and fragrance can be designed to release a substantial amount of fragrance over a predetermined period of time, for example between 2 and 30 days. The dotted line represents a typical prior art air freshening device that releases fragrance quickly.

Referring to Fig. 18, another air freshening device 10f is shown, which is similar to the above-mentioned air freshening device in many respects. The shape and dimensions of the air freshening device 10f, or the carrier material 22f or the gel can be substantially flexible or bendable. For example, the air freshening device may be thinner and easily conform to the surface 14c, which may also be curved. Thus, the air freshening device can have a thin polymer substrate. The thin polymer matrix can be flexible and conformable, yet elastic and able to return to its original configuration. The air freshening device 10f or carrier material 22f may have an attachment surface 160 for attachment to a surface, such as glass. As noted above, the attachment surface 160 may be sticky or sticky so that the surface can be snug to the surface without the need for chemical adhesives or mechanical fasteners. Thus, the air freshening device 10f can be a simple device that can be detachably mounted to a surface such as a windshield or a mirror. Additionally, the air freshening device 10f may include a support surface 164 configured to hold or support another object 168, similar to that described above. The support surface 164 may also be sticky or sticky for adhering other objects.
