Abstract

This invention discloses a garments that utilize complex panel shapes to minimize the total number of panels used, the number of seams, and total seam length. The invention is particularly suitable for the manufacture of wetsuits which may be used for water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, diving, swimming or other similar activities. Background technique

Tight-fitting garments are garments that closely conform to the shape of the wearer's body. A wetsuit is an example of such a garment, where the fit of the garment helps create a thin layer of water between the fabric of the garment and the skin of the body. This thin layer of water provides the main insulation for the wetsuit. It is therefore preferable that no further water enters the wetsuit after the initial thin layer of water has formed and has been warmed by the body.

Tight-fitting garments such as wetsuits are made of several panels joined together at seams by sewing and/or gluing. A template combining several panels of different shapes and sizes is used to create a wetsuit or other garment that is "sculpted" to closely fit the shape of the wearer's body. Since the garment conforms to the shape of the wearer's body, parts of the garment are often named after the parts of the wearer's body that come into contact with the garment. Clothing generally consists of various types of garment pieces. Of particular interest here are the outer panels. These panels are garment panels that are typically (a) used to cover undergarments, underwear panels, or body parts of the wearer and (b) form the outer surface of the garment. For garments of relatively simple shape, such as diving suits, the outer panels constitute most, if not all, of the outer surface of the garment. Other garment panels may include panels that form pockets, flaps, and pads, or that are used to form surface gathers or trims. Although the term "panel" generally includes various types of panels, it is used hereinafter only to describe outer panels. Some garments utilize "point seams" (usually tapering pleats) to adjust the fit of the garment. Such point seams generally involve joining together two or more points of a single piece, if the points are edge portions of separate pieces that are sewn together. Unfortunately, traditional point seams become problematic when the thickness of the panel material increases because the wrinkled portion of the panel prevents the fit of the garment.

Many fabrics used in garment production are known and need not be described in detail here. It is worth noting, however, that typical fabrics used in wetsuit fabrication include nylon, spandex, polyolefin, or a combination of these materials bonded to neoprene (fiberless rubber) insulation. Various thicknesses of fabric are used depending on the temperature rating of the wetsuit. These materials are generally flexible and stretchable, allowing freedom of movement for the wearer. This is important for wetsuits used for intense sports such as surfing. While the techniques used to form wetsuit seams also provide softness and stretch, the seams are often not as soft as the fabric they are joined to.

Newer wetsuits designed primarily for surfing tend to have bends at the elbow and knee joints to more precisely conform to the normal position of the wearer's arms and legs when standing on a surfboard. While this is beneficial to the wearer, it also means that the wetsuit must include additional panels of appropriate shape and size that, when joined together, can form the desired shape at the elbow and knee joints. However, aspects of the present invention are generally applicable to clothing in general and are not limited to wetsuits.

One aspect of the present invention provides a tight-fitting garment comprising a first panel of fabric having a torso portion shaped to substantially surround the waist region of the wearer's body, and having the ability to be formed in the finished garment ( All garment parts have been sewn together) extending outward to the upper part of the underarm area of the body, so there are no garment seams in the armpit area of the body. The legs of this garment are made to fit the shape of the body more closely by using pointed seams in the knee and calf areas. The pointed seam and corresponding removed area preferably extend from the medial knee area to the front of the knee and down to the outside of the calf. This helps to form the garment into the desired three-dimensional shape.

Garments according to this feature of the invention may also employ such pointed seams to form a bend in the knee joint area such that the thigh portion forms an angle with respect to the calf portion. In this way, the legs of the garment can be produced to more closely match the common position of a surfer's leg, without the need for additional panels to be added to the legs of the garment.

Yet another aspect of the present invention provides a bodysuit having a pair of sleeves configured to closely fit the shape of the human body and having a bend in the elbow region so that the forearm portion of the sleeve forms an angle with the upper arm portion of the sleeve, in which each sleeve is made from a single piece of fabric and the bend is formed by a point seam which, in the finished garment, begins at the seam on the upper rear side of the upper arm, in the area near the elbow termination.

Garments made according to this feature of the invention include sleeves that more accurately reflect the shape of the arm and its usual position, while avoiding the addition of additional fabric panels and the seams associated therewith.

When developing the garment of the present invention, in order to reduce the seam, the inventor broke the traditional concept and did not consider the yield of the fabric too much. Although a wetsuit produced according to the present invention would require more fabric, thereby increasing costs, this cost increase would be compensated for by the faster manufacturing process, as there would be less cutting and stitching in the production of such a wetsuit up. Wetsuits made in accordance with the present invention can also be slightly lighter than conventional wetsuits due to the shorter length of seams in such garments and thus the lower amount of adhesive and stitching used. It is believed that garments according to the invention generally have a shorter overall seam length. It is believed that the preferred wetsuit will have a total seam length of less than 26 feet for a small full body suit, less than 27 feet for a medium full body suit, and less than 29 feet for a large full body suit. Detailed ways

Referring now to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a standard "MX" series wetsuit manufactured by the applicant. Referring now to Figures 4 and 5A to 5C, another more preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown.
