The present invention relates to absorbent articles which can be worn in underwear to absorb bodily fluids and include items such as sanitary napkins, panty liners or incontinence pads.

Background technique

Sanitary napkins have traditionally come in two basic configurations, which are described below.

The first configuration consists of a sanitary napkin that does not have side panels for additional securement. Tabless tampons are discreet and can be worn over bathrobes, skirts, gym shorts, or other women's clothing without others noticing that the user is wearing the tampon. However, the lack of additional securement provided by the side panels allows the tampon to move relative to the wearer's panties, which can lead to discomfort and menstrual leakage - a particularly uncomfortable condition for the wearer.

This possibility of tampon movement is particularly critical when a woman is doing sports or other activities that move her legs a lot. The above disadvantages have contributed to the limited acceptance of tabless sanitary napkins in the consumer market.

A second configuration includes a sanitary napkin with side panels for additional securement. Traditional tampons are formed of opaque and/or opaque materials that hide any absorbed fluids, such as menstrual blood. The flaps are flexible and, in use, can be folded over the crotch portion of the wearer's panties. There is usually an adhesive on the covering side of the flap, which results in a correct and secure fixation, thus freeing the user from the above-mentioned annoyance. According to the present invention, there is provided a sanitary napkin comprising a substantially planar and elongated main body having two longitudinally extending side edges. The primary body comprises an outer garment layer of impermeable material, an inner body layer of liquid permeable material and an absorbent core inserted into the body between the outer layer and the inner layer. Detailed ways

According to a preferred embodiment, and as can be seen from Figures 1-4, the sanitary napkin 1 of the present invention consists of a substantially planar and elongated absorbent main body 4 having two substantially rectilinear longitudinal side edges 5 and two substantially curvilinear transverse end portions 7, the center of curvature of each transverse end portion 7 being substantially inside the area bounded by the longitudinal side edge 5 and the transverse end portion 7. The main body 4 consists of a liquid permeable cover layer 6 which, in use, contacts the wearer and absorbs any menses that may be present. Beneath the liquid permeable cover is an absorbent element 3 which absorbs and retains menses. Beneath the absorbent element 3 is a liquid impermeable outer layer 10 which prevents any absorbed liquid in the absorbent element 3 from leaking out of the sanitary napkin 1 . The outer layer has a primary adhesive layer 8 applied to its outer surface which, in use, contacts the wearer's underpants and enables the user to releasably secure the sanitary napkin 1 to the underpants. A release liner (not shown) covers the primary adhesive layer 8 before the sanitary napkin 1 is used.

The sanitary napkin 1 further comprises two flexible flaps 2 each protruding substantially laterally outwards from each longitudinal side edge 5 of the body 4 . Each flap 2 is substantially trapezoidal, the large sides of which are combined with respective longitudinal side edges 5 . The two wings 2 are made of transparent and/or translucent light-transmitting materials. In a preferred embodiment, each flap 2 has a secondary adhesive layer 9 on its outer surface, as described above for the primary adhesive layer 8 .

It is an advantage of the present invention that such grooved sanitary napkins provide retaining flaps which are transparent and/or translucent and are therefore ideally suited to be worn with swimwear, shorts, skirts or other women's clothing for displacement and movement. Highly resistant so that the woman wearing it is undisturbed and wears it without others noticing that the woman is wearing a sanitary napkin, since transparency and/or translucency cannot be noticed when viewed from a distance fins.

To use the tampon 1, the release liner of the primary adhesive layer 8 is removed and the tampon 1 is placed on the crotch portion of the underpants to be releasably secured therein. Next, the release liner is removed from the secondary adhesive layer 9 of the flap 2 and the flap 2 is folded over the edge of the crotch portion of the panty opposite the surface on which the sanitary napkin 1 is placed. As shown in FIG. 3 , the side panels 2 may be formed from a separate layer of transparent and/or translucent flexible material and secured to the body 4 of the sanitary napkin 1 during the process of manufacturing the sanitary napkin 1 . A separate layer of transparent and/or translucent flexible material can be secured between the cover layer and the outer layer, as shown in FIG. 3 . Alternatively, the layer of transparent and/or translucent flexible material may be secured to the cover layer on the body surface of the tampon, or to the outer layer on the garment surface of the tampon. However, alternatively, a sanitary napkin 1 may be provided having a liquid-impermeable outer layer made of a flexible, transparent and/or transparent and/or translucent flexible light-transmitting material, as shown in FIG. Show. In this configuration, the flap 2 is just a continuous extension of the liquid impermeable outer layer. Suitable transparent and/or translucent flexible materials include, but are not limited to, films formed from polymers such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and the like.

The sanitary napkin 1 and flaps 2 may be of other shapes known in the art, and the number of flaps 2 may be varied without making the invention substantially different from the preferred embodiment described herein.
