Abstract

A refiner plate for the face of a refiner disc comprising a plurality of refiner segments arranged side-by-side on the face of the disc to form a substantially annular refining region. Each refiner segment has a plurality bars, chicanes and grooves for refining a lignocellulosic material and forming a zig-zag path for receiving and transmitting steam generated during the refining process. The chicanes define a series of substantially arcuate lines extending from a position intermediate the junction of the inlet and refining zones to the outer edge of the refiner plate in the counter-rotation direction.

Description

This invention relates generally to disc refiners for wood fiber material and, more particularly, to refiner plate modules for such devices.

In a high-density mechanical pulp refiner, wood fiber is processed between two counter-rotating discs on which are mounted refiner plates. The plate generally has radial ribs and grooves. Due to this refining process, a large amount of steam is generated between the refiner plates. For refining to be effective, the fibrous material must remain on the surface of the refining plate spacer despite the high velocity of the steam and the enormous centrifugal force. Typically, the steam is exhausted through channels and dams are provided in the channels to block the flow of the material and thereby increase the residence time of the material in the refining zone.

In a typical refiner plate with radial baffles and grooves, the baffles provide shocks or pressure pulses to detach and fibrilize the fibers. The grooves make it possible to guide the supply of fibers radially and to discharge the steam. Near the circumference of the refiner discs, high velocity steam flow and high centrifugal force act to prematurely sweep the fibers from between the plates, thereby reducing the refining effect. Due to the small gap between the opposing plates and the filling of the grooves with fibers, the flow is restricted, resulting in a vapor pressure peak between the plates, located radially inward from the circumference. This pressure spike is the main source of refined thrust loading and can produce control instability at higher motor loads. Ideally, the steam generated during refining is removed from the refining zone as quickly as possible, while the pulp remains in the refining zone for as long as possible.

Briefly, the present invention includes a refiner plate that is constructed from a plurality of refiner plate tiles. Each tile is formed with a pattern comprising a refined region having a plurality of radially arranged barrier segments. Each barrier segment has oppositely disposed radially inner and outer ends. A chicane extends obliquely from the outer end of the inner fence segment to the inner end of the outer fence segment, forming a zigzag rib. Adjacent ribs form a plurality of zigzag grooves with alternate ribs. The bends form at least one substantially arcuate line extending radially and transversely across the at least one finishing zone.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a refiner plate for the surface of a refiner pan that facilitates venting steam to obtain a satisfactory pulp quality while keeping the pulp in the refining zone.

In a preferred embodiment, this object is achieved by providing bends which form a zigzag path for the large volumes of steam generated during the refining operation. Sloped guide surfaces on each bend guide the wood fiber material into the gaps between the refiner plates for comminution on the grinding surfaces of the stalls. Although, the influx of wood fiber material into the refining gap restricts the flow of steam through the gap in the vicinity of the bend, the bend is positioned to form an arc extending to the circumferential edge of the disc. The steam flowing in the gap can then flow to the edge of the disk in the arcuate corridor formed between the bent lines.

Thus, the aim of obtaining high quality fibers and good control of the steam is achieved by providing bends which guide the fibers into contact with the grinding surface, while providing multiple flow paths for guiding the steam through the refining gap to the peripheral edge of the disc . To the best of the inventor's knowledge, no one has previously provided kinks that distribute steam in a manner that facilitates the flow of steam into the refining gap.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, a refiner plate according to the present invention comprises a plurality of refiner plate tiles 10 . These refiner plate segments 10 may be secured to the front surface 12 of a generally circular refining pan 14 (FIG. 2). Although in the illustrated embodiment each tile 10 has two regions 16, 18 each having a set of differently oriented graphics, each tile 10 may alternatively have one, three or more Multiple regions, each with a corresponding set of graphics (Figure 1).

Plate segments 10 are attached to disk surface 12 in any convenient or conventional manner, such as with bolts (not shown) passing through holes 20 . The bolt engages the disc 14 at one end and has a head structure at its other end which bears on the surface of the borehole. Disk 14 is only partially shown, having a center and generally rounded edges. The coil rotates around its center. The refiner plate segments 10 are arranged side-by-side on the surface 12 of the disc 14 forming a generally annular surface and are indicated generally at 22 (FIG. 2). When surface 22 faces another refining disc carried by another disc, forming part of the refining area,

1, each refiner plate segment 10 has an inner edge 24 near the center of the disc, an outer edge near the circumference of the disc, and front and trailing edges 28, 30. 30 abut against leading and trailing edges 30, 28, respectively, of adjacent refiner plate segments 10' (FIG. 4). The following description will refer to a single panel segment 10, but it should be understood that all segments forming the annular panel are preferably substantially similar. Barriers 32, 34 and grooves 36, 38 extend substantially radially, ie, radially or parallel to the radius of the disk, or obliquely at an acute angle to the radius. The plate block 10 has on its surface one, preferably two or three barriers of different shapes and grooves between the barriers, so that the material to be refined can pass from the plate block 10, 10, the general direction of flow from the inner edge 24 to the outer edge 26.

The first or inlet region 16 has a plurality of baffles 34 and grooves 38 between adjacent baffles 34, all extending in a generally radial direction. This pattern is particularly suitable for receiving wood chips, pulp, etc. and performing preliminary refining work on them to reduce the size of the material, which is then funneled radially outwards into a second zone, the refining zone 18 . The refining zone 18 has a plurality of bars 32 and grooves 36 between adjacent bars 32 which also extend approximately radially parallel. A third, outer zone (not shown) may be disposed between the finishing zone 18 and the outer edge 26 of the plate. As shown in FIG. 1, each region 16, 18 may comprise a plurality of segments, each segment having a consistent pattern. In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the tiles have two sections in each area. This pattern promotes steam flow radially outward toward the outer edge 26 of the disk 14 and inward toward the inner edge of the disk 14 to evacuate the steam while retarding the flow of material to ensure adequate refining of the material.

As the disk 14 and plates rotate, the partially refined material is directed radially outward due to centrifugal force. A large amount of steam is also generated in the finishing zone 18, creating a steam flow with a high radial velocity. Especially with larger discs, the centrifugal force acting on the steam and partially refined wood chips increases significantly as the material moves more and more radially outward. While it is highly desirable to vent steam quickly, it is essential that partially refined fibers not be vented prematurely with the steam. This condition is influenced by the radial pressure distribution along the disk surface 22 due to the steam produced at high density refining. Since the pressure spike is between the inner and outer edges 24, 26 of the plates, the steam flows forward (radially outward) from the outside of the pressure spike and backward (radially inward) from the inside of the pressure spike, impeding the material feed in.

54。In the first embodiment of the present invention, the refining region 18 of the refiner plate block 10 includes a plurality of radially extending first rib segments 40 . Referring to Figure 3, each first rib segment 40 is connected at its radially outer end 42 by a bend 46 to the radially inner end 44 of the next outer first rib segment 40'. Each bend 46 includes a second rib segment extending obliquely in the direction of disk rotation 48 from the inner first rib segment 40 to the outer first rib segment 40' forming a radially extending zigzag fence. Referring again to FIG. 2, the inner side 50 of each bend 46 slopes from its top 52 toward the adjacent bend 46'

Grooves 36 formed between adjoining ribs 32 define a zig-zag path generally through finishing region 18 for fiber movement. The wood fiber material moving in the groove 36 is drawn into the corners of the bends 46 and up the inclined surface 54 by centrifugal force. Thus, wood fiber material is directed into the spaces or gaps between opposing refiner plates for further comminution. Thus, the zigzag path slows down the movement of the wood fiber material, preventing the material from being discharged from the refiner without being sufficiently refined. The main part of the steam, less affected by centrifugal force, continues to move in the grooves 36 to the circumference of the plate, where it exits the refiner.

26。Referring to FIG. 1 , the bends 46 form a series of curved lines 56 . In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the radially innermost end 58 of the wire 56 defines an arcuate segment 60 intermediate the outer edge 26 of the plate and the junction of the inlet and refining regions 16,18. Each line 56 extends from an arcuate segment 60 to the outer edge 26 of the plate in a direction opposite to the direction of disk rotation 48 such that the arc distance point P formed by the lines of the bends 46 has approximately the same radius. The bend 46 of the present invention causes an upwelling of material that limits the supply of gaps in the plates adjacent the bend 46 . However, steam generated during the refining operation may flow radially through the passage 82 between the lines 56, 56' of the bend 46. Alternatively, the innermost ends of the lines of the bend 46 may be positioned at the junction of the inlet and finishing regions 16 , 18 and the lines may not extend to the outer edge 26 .

In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 , an interrupted fence 84 may be provided intermediate each pair of zigzag fences 86 , 88 . The interrupted barrier 84 is formed by forming a gap 90 between a radially outer end 92 of an inner rib segment 94 and a radially inner end 96 of an outer rib segment 98 . The gap 90 is arranged in the middle of the bend 100 of the pair of zigzag bars 86 , 88 and thus extends obliquely in the direction 48 of disc rotation.

Referring again to FIG. 4 , the radially outer end 62 of each line 56 of the bend 46 terminating on the trailing edge 30 of the refiner plate segment 10 is positioned so as to be in front of the adjacent refiner plate segment 10 ′. The radially inner ends 63 of the lines 56 of the bends 46 on the side edges 28 are adjacent. Thus, the line of bend 56 may extend across both refiner plate segments 10, 10', providing a continuous line from the arcuate segment to the outer edge 26 of the plate.

While preferred embodiments have been illustrated and described, various modifications and substitutions can be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, the invention may also preferably be implemented in three-region tiles. Accordingly, it is to be understood that the present invention has been described by way of illustration but not limitation.
