Abstract

Description

光/电插头连接器
技术领域
本发明涉及光连接器，更具体来说，涉及包含有电连接器的光插头。
发明背景
光纤所具有的非同寻常的带宽促进了光通信的发展。这种带宽能够在发丝般细的纤维上同时传送数千条电话线路和电视频道，这种纤维是由高品质玻璃材料制成的。尽管如此，单凭带宽还不能满足一些可由电缆轻易应付的非常简单的要求。例如，电信号是能与现有通信底层设施(例如：标准电话设备)相互作用乃至操纵简单指示灯的唯一实用方式。于是看来最理想的缆线是将电线和光纤相结合，以使设计人员能够利用每一媒体的最大优势。尽管现在已有混合(即：电/光)缆线，但用于将这些缆线与其它通信设备相连的硬件目前仍太大、太贵或太不方便。
例如，接插板被用来在特定用户及设备与其它特定用户及设备之间建立互连，且必须精确地进行互连。美国专利第5,394,503号示出一种系统，其公开了一种带有末端连接器的光纤接插缆线，该连接器能够有效地与接插板耦合器相连。每条接插缆线包含一条或多条光纤以及一个或多个电导体。然而，这些末端连接器及耦合器比较笨重、横截面积较大，每个都具有许多单独部件，不适合于机械装配。因此，它们的空间效益和成本效益都很低。在这类接插板中，是很重视空间的，具有较小足迹(即：横截面积)的光/电连接器是比较理想的，易于在接插板中将间隔紧密的连接器插入或拆除的能力也同样重要。
现有技术中已知其它混合型连接器，示于美国专利5,109,452号、美国专利5,159,651号、美国专利5,473,715号以及美国专利5,745,622号中。然而，这些连接器并没有达到理想的成本效益和空间效益。一些连接器具有多个闩锁，而其它则需要旋转，这就意味着连接器之间要留有额外的间隙，以便在安装和拆除过程中安装人员的手指能够放在连接器两侧。
许多已知的插头连接器具有另一缺点：在安装过程中要花费很大气力对准连接器，因为需要同时进行电连接和光连接。这是试图同时对准多个连接所产生的必然后果。
因此，需要一种光/电插头连接器，它可以容易地插入插座而无需费力对准。此外，理想的是该光/电插头连接器的横截面积相对较小、零件数量较少，并且能够容易地插入紧密排列的接插板或从其上拆除。
发明内容
一种用于端接在光、电传输媒体末端的光/电插头连接器克服了上述缺点。该插头连接器含有绝缘外壳，包围住光纤固定装置，该装置支承着从外壳前开口伸出的光纤。该插头连接器在外壳上还有后开口，用于接纳光纤。一个单悬臂式闩锁安装在外壳顶侧，其固定端朝着前开口定位、其自由端伸向后开口。该闩锁适于与相应的插座接合形成互锁。导体固定装置位于外壳底侧，适于接纳若干绝缘的电导体。导体固定装置含有相同数量的金属刀刃端，它们伸进外壳底侧、刺穿电导体的绝缘体并与之电接触。
在本发明的一个优选实施例中，插头连接器被设计成端接在一条光纤和四个相互绝缘的电导体的末端。例如，该光纤可以是玻璃纤维或塑料纤维。在优选实施例中，光纤和电导体均包含在同一条缆线中。
本发明的光/电插头连接器适用于高密度接插板安装方式，因为闩锁定位在外壳的顶侧，而接电装置位于其底侧。这种构造使插头连接器的左右两侧不会被闩锁机构所妨碍。实际上，由于侧面只需要很小的空间，因此这种具有紧密间隔(并排式)插孔的插座结构可用于高密度用途中。
此外，本发明的插头连接器包含一个光插头部分，它可在连接器的电插头部分接合之前先进入相应的插座中。尽管在产生电接触前，只需要大约百分之二十(20％)的外壳部分插入插座就可以令人满意地对准，但在本发明的优选实施例中，电插头部分的金属刀刃端大约位于外壳中点处。在该点处，连接器的光插头部分对电插头部分的对准已起到充分的辅助作用。

具体实施方式
本发明解决了与电、光传输媒体相结合有关的多个问题。如上所述，每种不同传输媒体有其本身独特的优点和缺点，没有哪种媒体能胜任那些由其它媒体不费力就能完成的任务。例如，光纤是电的不良导体，即使是少量电流也不行；而电导体也达不到光纤所能轻易获得的带宽。因此，已经开发出含有光和电两种传输媒体的缆线，以做到物尽其用。图1示出了这种缆线之一的剖面图，该缆线10含有带缓冲层的光纤15和四条均以数字13标示的绝缘电导体。这些传输媒体由许多细丝状(纱状)加强件11包围住，这些加强件最好由聚芳基酰胺纤维制成。加强件11使缆线10具有足够的拉伸强度并且保护光纤免受不适当的应力，这种应力是在使用和处理过程中可能施加给缆线的。尽管只示出了一条光纤和四条电导体，但是应当理解，该缆线可包含任意数量的光纤和电导体，而并不背离本发明的原理。
在这种示例缆线中，带缓冲层的光纤15由玻璃纤维17(直径约为125微米)构成，其具有一层或多层保护性涂履材料(这时总直径约为250微米)、以及一层对光纤起缓冲作用的聚合材料16例如尼龙(此时总直径约为1毫米)。可选地，带缓冲层的光纤15也可以是塑料纤维，其直径同样约为1毫米。在这种情况下，不需要使用圆柱状套管来支承光纤、也不需要缆线中的加强件。然而，在图示的缆线10中，电导体13由直径为26的铜丝外包一层聚偏二氟乙烯绝缘材料构成。最后，缆线10还含有由聚氯乙烯(PVC)制成的外层护套12。由于这种特殊缆线是用于建筑物中，PVC材料将混合有提供阻燃特性的填充材料。
光/电插头连接器
图2和3中示出缆线10与一种新颖的光/电(混合)插头连接器相连。插头连接器由两片外壳结构20，30构成，尽管很显然也可将该外壳构造成单体结构，就象序列号为09/524,335(Driscoll 6-40-6-6-9)的申请书中所展示的那样。外壳结构20中的前开口21伸进一个凹腔中，该凹腔包围住由圆柱形套管40和基座构件42组成的纤维固定结构，该基座构件通常被称做“套筒”。一条轴向通道41贯穿整个套管延伸，该通道的大小适于容纳玻璃纤维17的末端部，该末端是在除去其保护性涂履层与缓冲层16之后。玻璃纤维17通过粘接剂固定在轴向通道41中，并且缓冲层16被固定在套筒42后端的孔47中。举例来说，套管由陶瓷材料例如锆构成，且被固定在套筒42内的圆柱形孔中，该套筒一般由金属或塑料制成，且在其前端含有一个轴向孔，该孔形状适于容纳并固定住圆柱形套管40的末端部。一个塑料管46围在套筒42的后端，两者均被螺旋弹簧构件45所环绕。弹簧的一端顶住套筒上的凸缘43，而其另一端顶住外壳结构30的开口31内部的阻挡块，以便推动套管40的前端穿进外壳构件20的开口21中。
第一外壳结构20在其顶侧具有单悬臂闩锁22，其设计用于与相配的插座440(见图4和图5所示)形成互锁。该悬臂具有固定端24，其朝着外壳结构20的前开口21定位，而其自由端伸向外壳结构的后部。该悬臂可向下偏转，从而使一对儿台肩23-23可以插入插座440中并与其中的边缘441或442互锁。
第二外壳结构30含有前向突出部33，它装配在外壳结构20后端的开口中。这两个外壳结构20，30通过外壳结构30上的楔形凸台39以及外壳结构20中的匹配槽口29方便地互锁。前向突出部33上的开口31沿轴向贯通整个外壳结构30、并穿过圆柱形金属弯边管件35，该管件安插固定在外壳结构30的后端。
外壳结构30在其顶侧还含有一个悬臂触发器32，其设计用于与外壳结构20上的悬臂闩锁22相互作用。悬臂触发器32具有固定端，其朝着外壳结构30的后端定位，而其自由端伸向外壳结构30的前方。当其受压时，触发器32的自由端能够与闩锁22的自由端滑动啮合并使其向下偏转。优点在于：触发器32不仅可以在通过一束软线向后拉动时防止两个外壳结构20，30阻碍其它缆线，而且可使闩锁22易于操作。
在组装过程中，将弯曲限制装置18、热缩管19、以及金属弯边套管34安装在未剥开的缆线10上。然后将各缆线元件的适当长度除去。这些元件例如可包括：缆线护套12；缓冲层16；玻璃纤维17上的保护性涂履层；以及聚芳基酰胺加强件11。然后用注射器将粘接剂注入孔41和47中。将绝缘的导体从金属弯边套管34中抽出，将缆线10的剩余部分插入连接器300中，从而使玻璃纤维17留在套管40的轴向通道41中，缓冲层16留在圆筒42的孔47中。聚芳基酰胺加强件11履盖住弯边管件35的外表面且被夹在弯边管件35和弯边套管34之间，后者经一种工具变形从而将它们牢固地连接在一起。除摩擦力外，金属弯边管件35外表面还开有沟槽，以增强加强件11和弯边管件之间的机械连接。
然后将电导体13布线在弯边套管34周围，并伸进外壳30的底侧部，它被设计用作电插头。若干狭槽37适于接纳相同数量的导电末端刀刃36，这些刀刃的加工形状能够刺穿电导体13上的绝缘体。刀刃36向上压入外壳30的底侧部，从而与每个绝缘导体13相接合。当弯边套管34经过变形安装在弯边管件35上、且安装完电导体13后，将热缩管19向前移动一段长度以包围住至少一部分弯边套管34。然后将热缩管19加热从而将外护套12(见图1)和导体13固定在弯边套管上。最后将弯曲限制装置18向前推到外壳30的后端，为的是增大缆线10在该点的弯曲半径。急剧弯曲会增大光纤的传输损失。需要说明的是：热缩管19的长度要比弯曲限制装置18略长一些，其作用是增强缆线在弯曲限制装置18背后区域内的刚性，在光负载下该区域最先发生严重弯曲。
图3是光/电插头连接器300在与缆线10组装后的剖面图。图3所特别关注的是位于外壳结构30底侧部的电连接装置的设计结构。举例来说，电导体13加工成扁平软线，由一个整体成形的支架构件38将其固定在外壳30的底侧部。该支架构件的形状能够减少导体13的应变，并且当它被压向软线后，能够与外壳结构30的相邻部位形成互锁。用于刺穿绝缘体的刀刃36、刀刃容纳槽37以及支架构件38的设计均公开于第3,954,320号美国专利。
有利地，上述光/电(混合)插头连接器300的结构基本上与例如美国专利第5,638,474号所公开的现有LC型连接器插头相似。因此，可以与例如美国专利第5,647,043号所示的现有光插座向后兼容。不过，如本文图4所示，已将这类现有光插座改造成能够进行电连接。然而，与许多先有技术中的混合连接器不同，附加的电连接并不增加安装过程中的对准难度。在插头连接器300(见图3)中的电接点36与插座440中的金属丝弹簧449接触前，插头连接器的前端已经伸进插座440内并引导电接点相互对准。实现方式是通过使电接点36远远位于插头连接器前端之后(即：落后距离超过外壳结构总长度的百分之二十)。此外，插头连接器300的设计结构使安装人员无需握住插头连接器的两侧并旋转来与插座接合。其结果是，如图4所示，插座440中用于容纳光插头的凹腔443可以间隔紧密地并排排列，以更密集的阵列来容纳插头连接器。
光/电插座

图6讨论插座640的另一实施例，它被设计用于安装在如图7所示的印刷线路板710(PWB)上。在此，金属丝弹簧648，649向下弯折以便插PWB。PWB710上的导电线路730使金属丝弹簧648，649之间、这些金属丝弹簧与PWB上的其它任何元件750，840之间形成连接。例如，PWB710包含集成电路750，它用来处理电信号并与进行光、电信号转换的光学装置840之间进行交换。图7示出了本发明的插座(例如：插座640)可兼容现有的光插头。举例来说，光插头100是在美国专利第5,719,977中所公开的一种已知装置。在此，插头100端接在带缓冲层的光缆210末端，该光缆内不含电线。图7还图示出本发明的光/电插头连接器(例如：连接器200)可被构造成不含如图2所示的用来操作闩锁22的触发器构件32；而且本发明的光/电插头连接器可以端接在一对儿分离的缆线末端，一条带缓冲层的缆线210只含有光纤，而另一条缆线220只含有电线。
现参照图8所示的光学装置840的剖面图，其包含前端区810和后端区820，它们之间由光学平面802-802分隔开，安插在凹腔830内的光插头之套管的端面在该平面处被带有孔823的阻挡块822有效阻挡住，该孔的直径在0.3~0.5毫米之间。凹腔830具有常规矩形开口，其形状适于接纳例如LC型光插头。纵轴801-801贯穿凹腔830和凸起821，该凸起支承住光插头的套管。凸起821的中心线与该纵轴801-801是同轴的。例示地，电-光转换器850，诸如检测器或半导体激光器，安装在光学装置840的后端区820内。其用于沿中轴801-801分别收集或发射光线。由于双向光传输比较理想，因此光学装置840一般包含一对儿如图7所示的并排式插座：一个用于经光纤短线头(未示出)传输光信号、另一个用于接收光信号。从光学装置840向下伸出管脚845，它们与转换器850相连；还伸出有金属丝弹簧849，用于与光/电插头连接器例如连接器300(见图2)形成电连接。
光缆示踪系统
图9示出了一种缆线示踪系统，适用于采用上述光/电插头连接器和上述光/电插座连接器的光纤。理想的是：混合型缆线通过光纤提供高带宽，同时通过电线提供连接精度，电线用于操控缆线一端或两端的指示灯。详细来说，所推荐的系统提供一种直观技术来检测光纤跨接件两端所处物理位置，跨接件用于在光纤分布构架中进行交叉连接。断开错误的跨接缆线将会使另一条光纤通路的服务中断，这使得正确鉴别跨接缆线变得非常关键。本系统解决了下述问题，即：由于将不正确的路径断开使服务中断而导致重大收益损失及用户不满等等。这对于光纤系统是非常重要的，因为该系统中一条光纤可能承载有数千条电话线路及电视频道。
图9示出一种含有多个光插座940的光纤交叉连接板90(通常被称作接插板)，这些插座需要交叉连接以提供、维护以及重新调整服务。成对儿的插座是通过含至少一条光纤的跨接缆线10交叉连接的。尽管为易于说明本发明，图9示出为在同一接插板90上插座之间的交叉连接，但应理解：当缆线延伸在隔开相当大距离的一对儿接插板之间时，例如在建筑物的不同楼层之间时，鉴别跨接缆线相对端的能力才更有价值。缆线10的每一端连接有一个插入光插座940的光插头。通过向光缆路径增加至少一条电线的方式，本发明提供一种快速、准确鉴别光缆相对端的能力。优选为通过使用如图1和2所示类型的缆线来实现，该缆线同时含有光、电传输媒体。此外，优选为通过将缆线10的每一端连接一个如图2和3所示类型的光/电插头连接器来实现。在每一端带有连接器的缆线通常被称作“跨接件”。最后，优选为通过使用如图4-6所示类型的光/电插座来实现，尽管图10示出了一种更加适用于缆线示踪系统的光/电插座设计方案。继续参照图9所示，应指出一点：指示灯941位于每个插座940上方。指示灯941可以是插座940的一部分，也可以是直接装在接插板90上的单独的灯。还需指出一点，开关93位于每个插座940的顶侧。缆线10的每一端插入插座940中。一端在位置901处插入插座，而另一端在位置902处插入插座。实现缆线示踪是通过：开启位置901的开关93，它使位置902的指示灯941点亮。或者，开启位置902的开关使位置901的指示灯点亮。在本发明的另一实施例中，开启缆线任意一端的开关93，可使两端的指示灯941均点亮。可达到这种效果的装置将在后面加以描述。
图10是图9所示接插板90局部的分解透视图，图解说明了插座940安装进接插板的情况。插座940适用于接纳如图3所示的插头连接器，该连接器向上述接插板传送光、电信号。与插座940之间的电连接是通过位于沟槽946中的导电元件949形成的，这些沟槽模制在插座940底侧。导电元件949从插座伸出，便于装进接插板90内的镀金通孔914(有时被称作“通路”)中，该接插板90例如由一块印刷线路板构成。导电元件949还在插座的前端围绕突起942卷绕起来，其作用是构成弹簧接点，用于与插头连接器中的相配端子形成电连接。例如，导电元件是由0.015英寸(0.38毫米)金属原料冲压后再对突起区域942镀金制成的。导电元件作为一个整体单元来制造，它就是通常所说的“引线框”，定位在插座的沟槽946中。由于引线框的一部分被用作弹簧接点，整个引线框由弹性金属例如铍-铜制成，当然也可使用其它多种金属合金得到相同结果。插座940例如可由热塑性材料例如聚碳酸酯制成。一旦引线框安装完毕，即加热沟槽946以使其变形，从而将导电元件949锁定就位。
插座940还含有指示灯941，例如发光二极管(LED)，通过向电线线对948-948施加小电压来启动该灯。LED941及其相关的电线线对被模制在插座940内。电线线对948-948从插座伸出，以便于插入通路912中。尽管可以方便地将灯941模制在插座940中，但是应当理解也可以将该灯单独安装到接插板90中，以提供所需的视觉指示。
例示地，开关93是单刀单掷(SPST)开关，它安装在接插板90上靠近开口94处，该开口的形状适于接纳插座940。优选地，开关93包含一个弹簧构件，当松开后可使开关回到初始状态。图11和12示出了用于在每个位置901，902(见图9)处使灯和开关相互连接的两种不同设计方案。
在一个实施例中，当所需状态为：在启动缆线近端(例如位置901)的开关93时，只会导致缆线远端(例如位置902)亮灯，此时可在每个位置901，902安装图11所示电路。图示为开关93处于通常状态，借此使端子114存在一个电压(零伏或“接地”)，该电压经发光二极管(LED)941和限流电阻112接地。在位置901，端子114通过接插板90上的导线路径与插座940(见图10)上的导线949之一相连，该接插板例如可由一块印刷线路板构成。光/电插头连接器300(见图2，3)在位置901插入插座940，并使位置902产生零电压，在该位置902连接有如图11所示的相似电路。此时整个电路由分别位于等电压(接地)之间串联电路每一端的LED941、电阻112、以及开关93构成。然而，当一端的开关被压下时，即向电路施加另一个电压(+V)，致使处于另一端的LED点亮。这是由于开关93被设计为闭合成一条从接地端只经过一个LED到达正电压+V的电路。
在另一实施例中，当所需状态为：在启动任一位置的开关93时，可导致缆线两端(例如位置901和902)均亮灯，此时可在每个位置901，902安装图2所示电路。图示为开关93处于通常状态，借此使端子114存在一个电压(接地)，该电压经发光二极管(LED)941和限流电阻112接地。在位置901，端子114通过接插板90上的导线路径与插座940(见图10)上的导线949之一相连，该接插板例如可由一块印刷线路板构成。光/电插头连接器300(见图2，3)在位置901插入插座940，并使位置902产生接地电压，在该位置902连接有如图12所示的相似电路。此时整个电路由分别位于等电压(接地)之间串联电路每一端的LED941、电阻112、以及开关93构成。当一端的开关被压下时，即向电路施加另一个电压(+V)，致使两端的LED都点亮。这是由于开关93被设计为闭合成一条从接地端经过两个LED到达正电压+V的电路。
在上面所述的任一实施例中，跨接缆线一端与接插板90中的插座940的连接图示于图13中。在优选实施例中，LED941模制在插座940座体内，向LED传送电流的电线线对948安装在接插板中。插座内的电导体949在接插板与光/电插头连接器300中的金属刀刃36之间传送电信号。为了完整起见，需要说明一点，图11和12中所示电路中的端子114是与导体949之一相连接的。在插头连接器300与安装在插座940之开口943内的另一插头连接器(未示出)之间传送光信号。这种另一插头连接器含有光纤，该光纤伸进凸起945中，该凸起设计用于接纳光纤并能够与插头连接器300中所含光纤对准。
尽管已对本发明的各种特定实施方案做了图示和描述，但可以在本发明范围之内加以改变。这些改变包括如下内容但并不局限于此：使用塑料光纤而不是玻璃光纤；使用多光纤阵列而不是单光纤；使用一个电导体而不是图示中的多个；使用一个单独安装在接插板上的灯而不是模制在插座中的LED；插头连接器为单件式外壳而不是图示中的两件式外壳结构；以及由多片构成的插座而不是图示中的单件式结构。

Claims (10)

1.一种用于端接在光、电传输媒体末端的插头连接器(300)，该连接器含有：
光纤固定装置(40)，用于容纳并固定光纤(15)的末端部；
绝缘的外壳结构(20，30)，具有由一个或多个内表面限定而成的第一凹腔，该凹腔封围住光纤的末端部，该外壳结构还包含：(i)第一凹腔中的后开口，用于接纳光纤，以及(ii)第一凹腔中的前开口(21)，光纤从该前开口伸出；
单悬臂式闩锁(22)，用于与相应的插座(440)接合形成互锁，所述闩锁安装在外壳结构的顶侧，其固定端朝着前开口定位，其自由端伸向后开口；
其特征在于：
在外壳结构中，由一个或多个内表面限定成第二凹腔，用于接纳数N个电导体(13)；以及
相同数量N的金属刀刃端(36)，从外壳结构的底侧伸进第二凹腔中，并与每个电导体形成电接触。
2.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：金属刀刃端(36)位于外壳前开口(21)之后，落后距离超过外壳(20，30)总长度的百分之二十。
3.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：还具有由固定在外壳结构(20，30)顶侧的悬臂构成的触发器(32)，其固定端朝着后开口定位，其自由端伸向前开口(21)，当其受压时，触发器的自由端的位置可与闩锁(22)的自由端滑动啮合。
4.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：光纤(15)由玻璃纤维(17)构成。
5.如权利要求4所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：光纤固定结构包含：
具有轴向孔(41)的圆柱形套管(40)，用于接纳玻璃纤维(17)；以及
基座构件(42)，用于固定套管的末端部，所述基座构件含有轴向孔(47)，该孔与套管的轴向孔是同轴的。
6.如权利要求5所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：还包含有圆环弹簧(45)，设置在基座构件(42)周围并且顶住其凸缘(43)，所述弹簧还顶住第一凹腔的内表面之一，以推动光纤固定装置(40)的一端伸进前开口(21)。
7.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：外壳结构(20，30)包括互锁的第一和第二外壳结构，第一外壳结构(20)包括所述单悬臂式闩锁(22)，第二外壳结构(30)包括悬臂式触发器(32)；第二构件包括前向突出部(33)，其与第一构件的后端部相接合并互锁。
8.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：电导体(13)是分别绝缘的，每个金属刀刃端(36)的加工形状可刺穿绝缘的电导体的绝缘体。
9.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：N大于1。
10.如权利要求1所述的插头连接器(300)，其特征在于：还包含与之相连的一段缆线(10)，所述缆线包含至少一条光纤(15)和至少一个电导体(13)。
