The main furniture piece (110) and the auxiliary furniture piece (120) are fixedly arranged in an L-shape. The main furniture piece (110) comprises a hinge (150) allowing the main furniture piece (110) to be transformed from a first configuration (110A) to a second configuration. The second configuration corresponds to a bed having a substantially horizontal sleep surface and having a longitudinal extension corresponding to an intended head-to-foot sleep orientation of the user. The hinge (115) extends parallel to the longitudinal extension (L 110) of the second configuration.
Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to furniture devices and, in particular, to furniture devices that are convertible to provide different functions.
Background
Different types of convertible furniture have been on the market for some time. One main purpose of such furniture is to provide the desired function when needed, and by rearranging different parts of the furniture, another configuration is possible, for example for another need of the owner/consumer or for space saving purposes.
One example of convertible furniture is a wall bed. Such beds are typically mounted to the wall by means of a hinge at the head end and by raising the foot end the bed will pivot towards the wall. By fixing the bed to the wall, the bed will no longer occupy floor space and for this reason, the wall bed is very popular, especially in compact living apartments and the like.
The above-described hidden beds have certain disadvantages; first, proper installation requires high stability of the support wall. Second, the installation is quite complex and particularly strong connectors must be used to ensure safe use of the bed. Third, the hinged connection between the bed and the wall is critical because it must be able to support heavy persons sitting at the ends of the foot. Fourth, they are not suitable for all areas because the entire length of the bed is folded outwardly from the wall.
In view of the above drawbacks, there is a need for other solutions that can provide the desired versatility of convertible furniture in a safe manner, but that require less critical components and installation procedures.
Disclosure of Invention
The object of the present invention is to provide a new furniture device which is an improvement over the prior art and which obviates or at least mitigates the above-mentioned disadvantages. More specifically, it is an object of the present invention to provide a freestanding furniture device that can be used as more than one furniture piece. These objects are achieved by the technique set forth in the attached independent claims, wherein preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent claims related to the independent claims.
In a first aspect, a freestanding furniture device is presented that includes a primary furniture piece and a secondary furniture piece. The main furniture piece and the auxiliary furniture piece are fixedly arranged in an L-shape. The main furniture member includes a hinge member that allows the main furniture member to transition from a first configuration to a second configuration. The second configuration corresponds to a bed having a substantially horizontal sleep surface and a longitudinal extension corresponding to an intended head-to-foot sleep orientation of a user of the bed. Furthermore, the hinge extends parallel to the longitudinal extension of the second configuration.
In one variation, the main furniture piece is transitionable between the first configuration and the second configuration by pivoting the transition portion of the main furniture piece about the hinge. This is advantageous because it allows a convenient way of transforming the main furniture piece and may provide different configurations at opposite sides of the transforming part.
In one variation, the main furniture member comprises a rectangular frame, and wherein at least a portion of the transition portion is disposed within the frame when the main furniture member is configured in the first configuration. This is advantageous because the height of the main furniture piece is the same, regardless of the configuration in which the main furniture piece is configured.
In one variation, the first configuration corresponds to a shelf, sofa, or wall panel.
In one variant, the auxiliary furniture piece has a height which is smaller than the height of the main furniture piece. This is advantageous because it allows an increased degree of freedom for interior decoration and the like.
In one variant, the height of the auxiliary furniture piece is less than 50% of the height of the main furniture piece. This is advantageous because it allows an increased degree of freedom for interior decoration and the like.
In one variation, the auxiliary furniture piece is a shelf, a cabinet, or a sofa.
In one variation, the auxiliary furniture piece is configured to reversibly transition from the first configuration to the second configuration. This is advantageous because it provides an additional furniture part in the furniture device and is thus further used in the furniture device.
In one variation, the first configuration of the auxiliary furniture member corresponds to a sofa and the second configuration of the auxiliary furniture member corresponds to a bench.
In one variation, the first configuration of the auxiliary furniture member corresponds to a cabinet and the second configuration of the auxiliary furniture member corresponds to a table.
In one variation, the primary furniture member is configured to be selectively transitioned from a first configuration to a second or intermediate configuration. This is advantageous because it provides an additional furniture part in the furniture device and is thus further used in the furniture device.
In one variation, the first configuration of the main furniture piece corresponds to a sofa and the intermediate configuration of the main furniture piece corresponds to a bench.
In one variation, the first configuration of the main furniture piece corresponds to a shelf and the intermediate configuration of the main furniture piece corresponds to a table.
In one variant, the longitudinal extension of the second configuration of the primary furniture piece is adjacent to the extension of the secondary furniture piece. This is advantageous because the bed is folded in an L-shape and the total area required for the furniture device is reduced.
In one variation, the furniture device further comprises an L-shaped bottom frame. The main furniture piece and the auxiliary furniture piece are fixedly arranged on the L-shaped bottom frame. This is advantageous in that the L-shaped bottom frame can be used as a platform in the production of furniture devices with differently configured main furniture pieces and auxiliary furniture pieces.

Detailed Description
Hereinafter, certain embodiments will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided by way of example so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art, such as defined in the appended claims.
The term "coupled" is defined as connected, although not necessarily directly, and not necessarily mechanically. Two or more items that are "coupled" may be integral with each other. The terms "a" and "an" are defined as one or more unless the disclosure expressly requires otherwise. As understood by those of ordinary skill in the art, the terms "substantially," "about," and "about" are defined as largely, but not necessarily entirely, what is specified. The terms "include" (and any form of inclusion, such as "comprises") and "comprising", "have" (and any form of having, such as "has") and "having", "include" (and any form of containing, such as "includes") and "comprising", "and" contain ") are open-ended, connected verbs. Thus, a method that "comprises," "has," "includes," or "contains" one or more steps possesses those one or more steps, but is not limited to possessing only those one or more steps.
A furniture device 100 that addresses at least some of the above disadvantages is illustrated in fig. 1. Fig. 1 shows an isometric view of a freestanding furniture device 100. The furniture device 100 is self-contained in the sense of being sufficiently stable that it can be freely disposed on any suitable surface without the need to support an external structure, such as a wall or ceiling. The freestanding furniture device 100 includes a primary furniture member 110 and a secondary furniture member 120. The furniture parts 110, 120 are fixedly arranged in an L-shape, so that their mutual arrangement provides the necessary stability for the independence of the furniture device 100. Forming the furniture device 100 in an L-shape is advantageous because it provides a stable construction that can be freely arranged in a room without being limited by walls or ceilings. In addition, the freestanding furniture device 100 having an L-shape does not need to be anchored to a wall, floor or ceiling, but is sufficiently stable itself. The L-shape enables the furniture device 100 to also function as a room divider in case the furniture device 100 can be used as a dividing wall for a division.
In fig. 1 to 5c, the main furniture piece 110 and the auxiliary furniture piece 120 are arranged at an angle towards each other. More specifically, the primary furniture member 110 is disposed perpendicularly (i.e., 90 degrees) with respect to the secondary furniture member 120. However, the primary furniture member 110 may be disposed at an angle of between about 45 degrees and 135 degrees relative to the secondary furniture member 120.
The furniture elements 110, 120 are preferably different furniture elements 110, 120 and at least one of the furniture elements 110, 120 can be transferred from the first configuration 110A, 120A to the second configuration 110B, 120B (see fig. 2a to 2B and fig. 4a to 4 c). The primary furniture member 110 extends along the primary longitudinal extension L 110 and the secondary furniture member 120 extends along the secondary longitudinal extension L 120. Preferably, the primary longitudinal extension L 110 is substantially perpendicular to the secondary longitudinal extension L 120.
It should be emphasized that within the scope of the present disclosure, the term transition means a bidirectional transition. The transition from the first configuration 110A, 120A to the second configuration 110B, 120B also means a reverse transition, i.e. a transition from the second configuration 110B, 120B to the first configuration 110A, 120A. The configurations 110A, 120A, 110B, 120B may be considered different articles of furniture or different uses of the furniture device 100.
In a preferred embodiment of the free standing furniture device 100, the main furniture piece 110A is capable of being converted into a second configuration 110B in the form of a bed 110B. This is illustrated in the cross-sectional side view of the main furniture piece 110 of fig. 2a to 2b, wherein the main furniture piece 110 comprises a transition portion 111. The transition portion 111 is pivotally attached to the main furniture piece by a hinge 115. The transition portion 111 is configured such that the first side 110A of the transition portion 111 serves as a functional surface of the first configuration 110A and the second side 110B of the transition portion 111 serves as a functional surface of the second configuration 110B. Hinge 115 allows transition portion 111 to transition from first configuration 110A to second configuration 110B in the form of bed 110B. The hinge 115 has a longitudinal extension parallel to the longitudinal extension of the main furniture member 110. The hinge 115 extends along the main longitudinal extension L 110, i.e. parallel to the main longitudinal extension L 110. The extension of the hinge 115 reduces the torque force transferred from the second configuration 110B to the main furniture piece 110. In addition, since the hinge 115 extends along the main longitudinal extension L 110, the hinge 115 may be disposed in close proximity to the rear side of the main furniture piece 110, resulting in the second configuration 110B extending less into the room space. Further, the engagement between the main furniture piece 110, such as the frame 112, and the hinge 115 may be disposed adjacent and proximate to the floor surface. Thus, the L-shape of the furniture device 100 may be designed in a very neat and slim manner while still providing a stable second configuration 110B (e.g., the bed 110B) that is not tilted. Thus, the combination of the longitudinal hinge 115 and the furniture device 100 as a separate component provides a cleaner and thus cheaper and stable furniture device 100 that does not require any wall attachment.
As illustrated in fig. 2a, when the main furniture piece 110 is configured as a bed 120B, the transition portion 111 is rotated about the hinge 115 by about 90 ° such that the functional surface of the first configuration 110A faces the floor and the functional surfaces of the second configuration 120B, the bed 120B face the ceiling, see fig. 2B. Thus, the transition portion 111 pivots about the hinge 115 along the main longitudinal extension L 110.
When the transition portion 111 is in the first position, the transition portion 111 is substantially vertical and the main furniture piece 110 is configured in the first configuration 110A. When the transition portion 111 is in the second position, the transition portion 111 is substantially horizontal, i.e. parallel to the auxiliary longitudinal extension L 120, and the primary furniture piece 110 is configured in the second configuration 110B.
To further increase the stability of the freestanding furniture device 100, particularly when the main furniture piece 110 is configured in the first configuration 110A, i.e. when the bed 110B is in the upright hidden position, the bed 110B may be configured with a longitudinal extension parallel to the hinge 115, i.e. along the main longitudinal extension L 110, which corresponds to the intended head-to-foot sleeping orientation of the user of the freestanding furniture device 100. That is, the bed 110B will be arranged such that a person sleeping on the bed will be arranged perpendicular to the auxiliary longitudinal extension L 120. In this configuration, the center of mass of the primary furniture member 110 will be closer to the hinge 115 (and thus provide less load on the hinge 115) when the primary furniture member 110 is occupied by a person lying in the bed 110B than would be the case if the user's intended end-to-end sleep orientation would be parallel to the auxiliary longitudinal extension L 120.
In the embodiment of the main furniture piece 110 illustrated in fig. 2a and 2B, the functional surfaces of the first configuration 110A and the second configuration 110B are arranged on opposite sides of the transition portion 111. When the transition 111 is in a substantially horizontal position, i.e. when the main furniture piece 110 is configured as a bed 110B, the height of the main furniture piece 110 is different from the height of the main furniture piece 110 when the transition 111 is in a substantially vertical position. In other words, the height of the primary furniture piece 110 may be different between the first configuration 110A and the second configuration 110B.
In order to keep the height of the main furniture piece 110 constant, the main furniture piece 110 may comprise a rectangular frame 112, see fig. 1, which rectangular frame 112 is configured to accommodate at least a part of the transition portion 111 when the main furniture piece 110 is configured in the first configuration 110A. This configuration further increases the suitability of the freestanding furniture device 100 as a partition section of, for example, a room, since regardless of the configuration of the main furniture piece 110, there is always a vertical partition of constant height, i.e. the frame 112. The extension of the hinge 115 along the main longitudinal extension L 110 also reduces the torque force transferred from the second configuration 110B to the frame 112.
Referring to fig. 3a to 3b, one non-limiting embodiment of a furniture device 100 according to the present invention will be presented. In fig. 3a, a furniture device 100 is shown, wherein a main furniture piece 110 is configured in a first configuration 110A. The first configuration 110A is a wall panel 110A. The wall panel 110A may be partially or fully covered by a drawing board, such as a whiteboard or chalk board, and may also be provided with a horizontal shelf 110A1. The auxiliary furniture member 120 is formed as a bookshelf at an end near the main furniture member 110, wherein the intermediate shelf extends along the auxiliary longitudinal extension L 120 to form a bench 120A. As seen in fig. 3B, the main furniture piece 110 may be configured in a second configuration 110B in the form of a bed 110B. This is achieved by pivoting the transition portion 111 about the hinge 115 (not shown in fig. 3a to 3 b) of the main furniture piece 110 such that the transition portion 111 is in a horizontal position substantially parallel to the auxiliary longitudinal extension L 120. In this embodiment, the bed 110B is held in its horizontal position by means of the holding element 113, the holding element 113 being arranged to prevent the transition section 111 from rotating beyond its horizontal position. The holding element 113 may be any suitable element connected to the frame 112 and the transition portion 111, such as a wire, an extendable rod, a sliding mechanism, or the like. When the main furniture piece 110 is configured in the first configuration 110A, the holding element 113 may be hidden from view by the transition 111 inside the frame 112.
The retaining element 113, which is configured as illustrated in fig. 3B, allows the bed 110B to be held in its horizontal position above the floor without having to extend support legs or the like from the transition portion 111. This is made possible by the stability of the L-shaped freestanding furniture device 100, which prevents the furniture device 100 from tipping over. The freestanding furniture device 100 of fig. 3 a-3B has many uses and may be particularly suitable for use in a child's room because it may be configured as a bed 110B without having to clean floors filled with toys or other debris.
Furthermore, as indicated in fig. 1, 2a and 2b, the free standing furniture device 100 comprises a main furniture piece 110 and an auxiliary furniture piece 120 as well as a hinge 115. Although not shown, the primary furniture member 110 may be arranged to be in the second configuration 110B while supported only by the hinge 115, the primary furniture member 110, the frame 112, and/or the auxiliary furniture member 120. Thus, the primary furniture piece 110 may be arranged in the second configuration 110B without the need for the retaining element 113. In one configuration, the primary furniture member 110 is supported only by the hinge 115 in the second configuration 110B. In one embodiment, the primary furniture member 110 is supported only by the frame 112 in the second configuration 110B.
In another non-limiting embodiment of the furniture device 100 according to the invention illustrated in fig. 4a to 4c, the auxiliary furniture piece 120 is also configured to be reversibly transformed from a first configuration 120A to a second configuration 120B. In this embodiment, the first configuration 120A of the auxiliary furniture member 120 is a sofa 120A as shown in fig. 4a, and the second configuration 120B of the auxiliary furniture member 120 is a bench 120B as shown in fig. 4B. The transition from the first configuration 120A to the second configuration 120B may be provided by folding the back 120A3 of the sofa 120A onto the seat section 120A2 of the sofa 120A such that the back side of the back 120A3 forms the top for the bench 120B. The backrest 120A3 may be formed with a triangular or tapered cross-section and the seating section 120A2 may be formed with a corresponding triangular or tapered cross-section such that when the backrest 120A3 is seated flat on the seating section 120A3, a generally flat horizontal area is provided as the seating surface 120B1 of the bench 120B.
Alternatively or additionally, the back support 120A1 of the sofa 120A may be configured to support the back 120A3 of the sofa 120A when the auxiliary furniture member 120 is configured in the first configuration 120A, i.e., the sofa 120A. When the auxiliary furniture member 120 is configured in the second configuration 120B, i.e., the bench 120B, the back support 120A1 may be configured to be deployed on the bench parallel to the main longitudinal extension L 110 to form the seating surface 120B1 of the bench 120B.
The use of the backrest 120A3 is beneficial when converting the sofa 120A into a bench 120B because it provides storage for the backrest 120A 3. In addition, the seating height of the bench 120B will be greater than the seating height of the sofa 120A, and the seating section 120A3 is a generally flat horizontal area, which provides a more suitable configuration for, for example, dining, as compared to the sofa 120A.
In fig. 4a and 4b, the main furniture piece 110 is configured in a first configuration 110A in the form of a wall panel 110A, the wall panel 110A comprising one or more cabinets 110A2. In this embodiment of the furniture device 100, the main furniture piece 110 can also be configured in an intermediate configuration 110C. As in the present embodiment, the main furniture piece 110 may be transformed from a first configuration 110A, a wall panel 110A, into an intermediate configuration 110C in the form of a table 110C or in particular a dining table 110C. The dining table 110C is hingedly connected to the transition portion 111 of the main furniture piece 110 such that it can be folded about an axis parallel to the main longitudinal extension L 110 and masked as a cabinet 110A2 when the main furniture piece 110 is configured in the first configuration 110A or the second configuration 110B.
As illustrated in fig. 4c, the main furniture piece 110 is also reversibly transformed from the wall panel 110A into a second configuration 110B in the form of a bed 110B. As shown in fig. 4 a-4B, the retaining element 113 is attached to the wall panel 110A and may function as a lever or handle when converting the wall panel 110A into the bed 110B. When the main furniture 110 is configured as a bed 110B, the holding element 113 may serve as a support leg for the bed 110B, allowing the size of the bed to be increased without concern as to whether the frame 112 is capable of supporting the bed 110B. Bed 110B may additionally or alternatively be supported by benches 120B and/or cabinet 110A2, which further reduces stress on frame 112 and/or support legs (retention elements 113).
The freestanding furniture device 100 of fig. 4 a-4 c is shown as including an L-shaped platform 130 as an L-shaped bottom frame 130. The L-shaped platform 130 is arranged as a support for the main furniture piece 110 and the auxiliary furniture piece 120, such that the main furniture piece 110 and the auxiliary furniture piece 120 are arranged on the L-shaped platform 130. The primary furniture member 110 and the secondary furniture member 120 may be attached to one another via an L-shaped platform 130. In other words, a fixed arrangement of the main furniture piece 110 and the auxiliary furniture piece 120 in an L-shape may be provided by the L-shaped platform 130. The L-shaped platform 130 may be common to different embodiments of the freestanding furniture device 100 such that the L-shaped platform 130 may be provided with differently configured primary furniture pieces 110 and auxiliary furniture pieces 120. The L-shaped support platform 130 may be any suitable material capable of supporting the primary furniture member 110 and the secondary furniture member 120.
In fig. 5a to 5c, a further non-limiting embodiment of a furniture device 100 according to the invention is illustrated. In this embodiment, the first configuration 110A of the main furniture piece 110 is a sofa 110A, see fig. 5a. The sofa 110A may be similar to the sofa 120B as described in the embodiment of fig. 4 a-4 c or configured in any other suitable manner. The auxiliary furniture member 120 is configured in a first configuration 120A in the form of a cabinet 120A.
Similar to the cabinet 110A2 of the embodiment of fig. 4 a-4 c, the cabinet 120A of the present embodiment may be configured to transition to a second configuration 120B in the form of a table 120B of fig. 5B. As seen in fig. 5b, the sofa 110A may be converted into a neutral configuration 110C in the form of a bench 110C. The transition from the first configuration 110A, the sofa 110A to the intermediate configuration 110C, the bench 110C may be provided as in fig. 4b by folding the back 110A1 of the sofa 110A onto the seating section 110A1 of the sofa 110A such that the back side of the back 110A1 forms the top for the bench 110C. The backrest 110A2 may be formed with a triangular or tapered cross-section and the seating section 110A1 may be formed with a corresponding triangular or tapered cross-section such that when the backrest 110A2 is seated flat on the seating section 110A1, a generally flat horizontal area is provided as the seating surface 110C1 of the bench 110C and the backrest 110A2 is conveniently stored.
As illustrated in fig. 5c, the main furniture piece 110 can also be configured in a second configuration 110B in the form of a bed 110B. As described elsewhere, the retaining element 113 may be attached to the wall panel behind the first configuration 110A and the intermediate configuration 110C and may act as a lever or handle when converting the first configuration 110A or the intermediate configuration 110C into the bed 110B. When the main furniture 110 is configured as a bed 110B, the holding member 113 may serve as a support leg for the bed 110B, allowing the size of the bed 110B to be increased without concern as to whether the frame 112 is capable of supporting the bed 110B.
Although not specifically shown, it should be emphasized that the first configuration 110A, 120A may include more than one shelf 110A1 that effectively forms a bookshelf or the like. In some embodiments, the shelf 110A1 may be hinged such that it remains always in a horizontal orientation when the primary furniture piece 110 transitions from the first configuration 110A to the second configuration 110B to prevent items from falling off the shelf 110A1, and vice versa.
The first configuration 110A may also be equipped with a table (not shown) that is folded down. In addition, it may be covered or partially covered by artwork or the like, thereby providing the aesthetic appearance of the first configuration 110A.
The embodiments illustrated and described herein are generally configured with an auxiliary furniture piece 120, the auxiliary furniture piece 120 having a height that is less than the height of the main furniture piece 110. This is not necessary, but is advantageous because it allows a more spacious degree of freedom in decorating and positioning the furniture device, because the auxiliary furniture piece 120 can be low enough so that it does not block windows or the like. Thus, in a preferred embodiment, the height of the auxiliary furniture piece 120 is less than 50% of the height of the main furniture piece 110.
It should further be mentioned that within the scope of the invention, the combinations presented by the first configuration 110A, 120A, the second configuration 110B, 120B and the intermediate configuration 130A, 130B of the main furniture element 110 and the auxiliary furniture element 120 may be freely combined with each other. Although the auxiliary furniture member 120 does not assume an intermediate configuration, any intermediate configuration 110C presented herein may be used as part of the auxiliary furniture member 120.
Modifications and other variations to the described embodiments will come to mind to one skilled in the art having the benefit of the teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated drawings. Therefore, it should be understood that the embodiments are not limited to the particular example embodiments described in this disclosure, and that modifications and other variations are intended to be included within the scope of this disclosure.
