The video system also includes ports for connecting to external devices, and a wireless transmitter for transmitting wireless signals in a plurality of channels, wherein the wireless signals include at least one of audio signals and video signals.

The display can be mounted to the front of the cover, and the media player can be mounted to the rear of the cover. The cover is pivotable relative to the base within an angular range of approximately 0° to 180°. The lid may be pivotally connected to the base using a hinge.

When the cover is in the closed position, the display screen and media player are operable, and when the cover is in the open position, a data storage medium can be inserted into the media player. The headrest of the vehicle seat may include at least one vent for dissipating heat. The media player may include at least one of the following: a DVD player, a CD-ROM player, a video game player, a video cassette player, a television tuner, a radio tuner, and a computer-processed video file capable of playing and one of the audio files.

The media source may include a port for connecting to an external device, and a wireless transmitter for transmitting wireless signals, wherein the wireless signals include at least one of audio signals and video signals.

The entertainment system also includes a display screen operably connected to the media source, where the display screen may be one of handheld, mounted to the housing, or mounted in the vehicle at a location remote from the housing. The display screen may be operatively connected to the media source via at least one of a direct connection, through a housing connection, or a wireless connection. An array of pins can also be used to electrically connect the media source to the housing.

The entertainment system may also include a cover pivotally connected to the housing with a hinge, wherein the hinge may be located on the top, bottom or side of the cover. A display screen can be mounted to the cover. The seat may include an opening in line with the slot in the media source for receiving data media to be inserted into the slot. The media source may include a storage device capable of storing at least one of a plurality of audio files and a plurality of video files.

In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a docking station for supporting a detachable video system includes a connector for electrically connecting the docking station to the detachable video system, and at least one port for connecting a media source to the docking station, Wherein data from the media source is provided to the docking station through at least one port and may be provided to the detachable video system via a connector.

Detailed ways

Referring to FIG. 3A, the portable video system is embodied as a slot-type video system 301 that includes a slot 302 that receives data media into the , MPEG Player 3 (MP3) discs, or data on media such as video game discs. The video system 301 is fixed on a docking station 303 (docking station). Video system 301 also includes hinge 304 . The head restraint 308 also includes vents 310 for dissipating heat. A cooling fan 311 for enhanced airflow can also be added inside the headrest. The cooling fan 311 is located behind the air vent 310 in the headrest 308, so that the cooling fan 311 can be concealed.

Referring to Figures 5A to 5D, a flip-type portable video system 501 is fixed on the docking station. The portable video system 501 includes a cover 502 and a base 503 connected by a hinge 504 . The lid 502 is pivotable on a hinge 504 away from the base 503 . Hinge 504 may be positioned on either side of lid 502 . The cover 502 includes a video display 505 , controls 506A, and an infrared (IR) transmitter and/or receiver 507 . The video system is capable of receiving a data medium 508 containing readable data. When the cover 502 is closed, the data medium 505 is secured. Lid 502 can be opened by depressing a button that disengages lid 502 from base 503, or by pulling lid 502 away from base 503, wherein hinge 504 as described herein is a friction fit. A media player 509 is concealed in the cover 510 . Lid 510 can be opened, for example, by pressing button 511 . The video system 501 is detachable so it can be detached from the docking station 303 .

The base 503 includes a control board 506B. The control panel 506B includes a plurality of controls for controlling various functions of the media player, such as volume control, previous, next, pause, eject and play, and also includes a power on/off button. The control devices 506A and 506B may be buttons, switches, touch-sensitive liquid crystal displays and the like.

Referring now to FIGS. 6A and 6B , the docking station 303 includes an array 601 of pins for connecting to another array 602 of pins of a video system 603 . The video system 603 may be a slot-type device, a clamshell-type device, or any other type of device that can be secured to the docking station 303 . When the video system 603 is fixed on the docking platform 303 , the pin array 601 and the video system pin array 602 can transmit data to the video player 603 . Therefore, the video player can be connected to external devices through the docking station 303 . The external devices include a secondary video display mounted on another head restraint, a security system, and the vehicle's audio system. In case the video system 603 is permanently installed in the headrest, the docking station can be omitted and the connection to the vehicle power supply and/or the data bus can be connected to the video system 603 via electrical leads.

The docking station 303 is connected to the electrical system of the vehicle. For example, docking station 303 may be wired to a 12V vehicle power supply. Power is supplied to video system 603 through pin array 601 and 602 . The docking station 303 can also be connected to the data communication bus of the vehicle. The data communication bus can transmit data to external devices.

Referring to FIG. 7A , docking station 303 includes a quick release mechanism for securing and detaching video system 701 . The quick release mechanism includes a button 702 for releasing a latch 703 which can be fastened to the video system 701 by pressing the video system 701 secured to the docking station 303 . The latching mechanism includes a latch 703 accessible to the bottom of the video system 701 . When the video system 701 is connected to the docking station 303, the latch 703 can be moved immediately. A spring 704 secures the latch 703 to the bottom of the video system 701 . The button 702 can be pressed to align the latch 703 with the opening at the bottom of the video system 701 and the video system 701 can be pulled away from the docking station 303 . As shown in FIG. 7B , the rear portion 705 of the video system 701 can be secured by a raised portion 706 that fits into a recessed portion 707 of the docking station 303 . When video system 701 is pressed into docking station 303, one wall 708 of the docking station flexes away from the rear of the video player until raised portion 706 aligns with recessed portion 707. The raised portion 706 and the recessed portion 707 cooperate to secure the video system 701 to the docking station 303 . Thus, the wall 708 of the docking station may be made of a flexible thermoplastic rubber. Other means of securing video system 701 to docking station 303 are also contemplated, such as clasps, locks, latches, and the like.

Referring to FIG. 8, a video system 801 includes input ports and output ports. For example, there is an audio/video input/output port 802 , a headphone port 803 and a power port 804 . It should be understood that other types of ports could also be provided, such as USB ports or RCA jacks for connecting game control devices. In addition, the video system 801 also includes a wireless transmitter for transmitting, for example, audio radio frequency signals, Bluetooth ^(R) or Whitefire ^(R) signals to wireless headsets. Video system 801 also includes an infrared (IR) port 805 for transmitting and/or receiving remote control signals. These ports may be located at any suitable location on the video system 801, such as at the bottom of the video system base, on the front or side of the video system base.

When the video system is removed from the docking station 303, as shown in FIG. 9, the cover 901 can partially cover the docking station. Cover 901 may be made of a material such as plastic, wood, leather and/or aluminum. The cover 901 can be secured by the same mechanism as the video system shown in Figures 7A and 7B. Thus, the cover 901 and the video player can have one or more common features, such as an opening for receiving a latch or the like.

It will be appreciated that the portable video system according to the present invention can be easily removed and operated outside the vehicle, such as in a home or office environment. Alternatively, the video system can be permanently attached to the headrest support structure via screws, hooks and adhesives.

Referring now to FIG. 10 , both video system 1001 and video slave unit 1002 are connected to a power source 1003 . The video slave unit receives display data from the video system 1001 via the data bus 1004 . The data bus 1004 can also be connected to other devices 1005, such as the audio system or the navigation system of the vehicle. The connection between video system 1001 and external device 1005 may be a wireless connection (not shown). Likewise, the connection between the video system 1001 and the video system slave device 1002 may also be a wireless connection (not shown).

Although clamshell-type and slot-type video systems have been described, the video system can also be embodied in other forms of construction, such as a system that includes drawers and spindles for securing data media. Referring to FIGS. 12A to 12C , an entertainment system 1200 includes a docking station 1203 and a video system 1201 mounted on the docking station 1203 . The docking station 1203 is preferably installed in the vehicle or on the roof of the compartment, and it includes a fixed part 1207 and a swing part 1209 . The docking platform 1203 can also be installed on other parts of the vehicle, such as the inner wall or seat of the vehicle. In addition, the docking station 1203 can also be installed outside the vehicle, such as under a cabinet or on the wall or ceiling of a home or office. The docking station includes holes 1208 and 1210 in the fixed portion 1207 through which the screws 402 can pass into the surface on which the docking station 1203 is mounted. The docking station 1203 may be mounted on a surface using clamps 401 , screws 402 , brackets, adhesives, nails, rivets, or any suitable mounting mechanism known to those of ordinary skill in the art.

When the docking station 1203 is installed in a vehicle, it includes a light 1212 similar to a standard dome light that can be turned on or off by the user or by a manipulation wire so that the light is turned on or off and can automatically turn on when the door is ajar . The video system 1201 is mounted to the swinging portion 1209 of the docking station 1203 using a quick release mechanism or a female/raised portion similar to that described for Figures 7A and 7B. Referring to FIGS. 6A and 6B , an electrical connection is provided between video system 1201 and docking station 1203 through pin arrays 601 and 602 . The pin array 601 of the video system 1201 is located on the rear of the video system housing. Through the pin arrays 601 and 602 , the video system 1201 can be used for data transmission and transmission, such as transmission of video signals or audio signals. As shown in Figure 12B, the swinging portion 1209 abuts against the fixed portion 1207 so that the video system 1201 can be hidden when not in use and takes up less space. The swing portion 1207 is preferably locked in place using a latch mechanism which can be released by pressing the button 1214 .

The video system 1201 is capable of playing video programs received through the docking station 1203 . For example, docking station 1203 may include a television tuner capable of receiving television signals for play through a video system installed in the docking station. The channel display 1260 and the channel selector button 1261 for selecting a TV channel are arranged on the side panel of the docking station 1203 , and of course they can also be arranged at other suitable positions on the docking station 1203 . Additionally, the docking station may also have a radio tuner (not shown).

Docking station 1203 also includes ports, such as a universal serial bus (USB) port, and input/output ports 1263 for connecting to external media drives. For example, audio input ports include XLR and RCA jacks, and video input ports include S-video connectors, RCA connectors, F-connectors, and component video. The docking station 1203 includes slots 1264 and 1265 of different sizes for receiving DVDs, CDs, flash memory cards, secure digital (SD) cards, smart media (SM) cards, memory stick (MS) cards. Referring to FIGS. 13A-13B , video system 1201 is connected to desktop docking station 1303 . The docking station 1303 can be freestanding and can be placed on a desk, table or counter. Similar to the docking station 1203 connection, the video system 1201 can be secured to the docking station using quick releases or recessed/raised portions similar to those shown in Figures 7A and 7B, or by other means such as clasps, locks, latches, etc. 1303 on. Ports 1282, 1283 and slots 1284, 1285 may be located on the front, side or rear of video system 1201.

The video system 1201 can be operated independently of the docking station 1203/1303 by means of a power source supplied either through a connection to a standard power source (such as an adapter to a household outlet) or by the battery pack 1501 . A media player, such as a DVD player, may be embedded in the video system 1201 or connected to the video system 1201 through ports 1282 and 1283 .

When connected to the docking station 1203/1303, the video system 1201 can receive video and audio programs via the docking station 1203/1303 from within the media player connected to the docking station 1203/1303. In addition, the video system 1201 is capable of playing video programs received from a media player embedded in the video system 1201 or directly connected to the video system 1201 through ports 1282 and 1283 . Video system 1201 includes speakers 1232 for playing audio programs or audio associated with video programs. Referring to FIGS. 16A-16C , a video system 1601 is mounted on the headrest 102 . Cover 1602 can protect video system 1601 . Cover 1602 is swiveled away from headrest 102, revealing video system 1601. Lid 1602 may be attached to the docking station by hinge 1603 or other retention means. When the video system 1601 is removed from the headrest 102, the cover 1602 can be closed to conceal the docking station.

Referring to FIG. 16B , video system 1601 includes video display panel 1604 . The video display panel 1604 is hinged to a base 1605 of the video system. Multiple hinges can also be provided.

A first hinge 1606 is provided to movably connect the base 1605 of the video system to the stand 1607 . The bracket 1607 can be movably connected to the video display panel 1604 through the second hinge 1608 . The first hinge 1606 is disposed along one edge of the base 1605 . The second hinge 1608 is connected at a point between two opposite sides of the display panel 1604 so that the display panel 1604 can be positioned against the base 1605 facing or facing away from the base 1605 . Manipulating first hinge 1606 and second hinge 1608 in a plane perpendicular to video system base 1605 causes display panel 1604 to move about first hinge 1606 in an arcuate direction. Therefore, the display panel 1604 can move in an arc direction around the first point of the base and a plurality of second points defined along the arc at the same time, wherein the arc is located on a plane perpendicular to the base.

The hinge can move along multiple axes. For example, the second hinge 1608 can move in a plane perpendicular to the video system base 1605, and can also rock from side to side. According to another embodiment, the hinge may be a ball-and-socket type hinge, which enables the display panel 1604 to be positioned on any one of a plurality of planes.

Referring to FIG. 16C , video system 1601 can be permanently mounted or attached to docking station 1609 of headrest 102 . The docking station 1609 is fastened to the headrest 102 , in particular to the inner headrest support structure 1610 . For example, the docking station 1609 can be fastened by using the hook 401 shown in FIG. 4A and the screw 402 shown in FIG. 4B . The controls 1705 for detaching the display panel 1604 may operate latches or other retaining features capable of retaining the display panel 1604 on the base 1605 . Referring to FIGS. 17B and 17E , both the first hinge 1606 and the second hinge 1608 are connected to the bracket 1607 . Bracket 1607 combined with first hinge 1606 and second hinge 1608 connects display panel 1604 to the base of the video system docked in docking station 1701 . The display panel 1604 includes a display screen 1709 on which data can be displayed. The display screen 1709 is visible when the display panel 1604 is closed, such as when it is locked on a base, or may be protected by the rear portion 1710 of the display panel 1604 . As shown in Figures 16A-16B and 17E, the display panel 1604 can be locked to the rear with the display facing the back for storage or the display facing the back for viewing.

Referring back to FIGS. 6A-6B , like docking station 303 shown in FIG. 6A , docking station 1701 is connected to the vehicle's electrical system. For example, docking station 1701 may be connected to a vehicle power source, such as 12V, via a wiring harness. Like the video system 603 shown in FIG. 6B , power can be provided to the video system 1601 through the pin arrays 601 and 602 . The docking station 1701 can be connected to the data communication bus of the vehicle. The data communication bus can transmit data to external devices.

Referring back to Figures 7A and 7B, like the docking station 303, the docking station 1701 includes a quick release mechanism as shown in Figure 7A or a concave portion 707 that matches the raised portion 706 as shown in Figure 7B for Video system 1601 is fixed and detached.

It will be appreciated that the portable video system according to the present invention can be easily detached and operated outside the vehicle, such as in a home and office environment. Referring to FIGS. 19A-19C , a video system 1900 mounted on a headrest 1901 includes a cover 1902 connected to a base 1910 by one or more hinges 1904 . The cover 1902 includes an entertainment device 1950 and a display screen 1920 formed on opposite sides thereof. By way of example, the entertainment device 1950 and other entertainment devices described herein may include a DVD player, CD-ROM player, video game console, video cassette player (VCP), television and radio tuner, MP3 player, or similar A device capable of downloading and playing computer-processed video and/or audio files, or a combination of any of the above media sources. Connection between display screen 1920 and entertainment device 1950 may be made through appropriately positioned openings in cover 1902 . Alternatively, the cover 1902 may be formed from a centrally open member surrounded by a frame, wherein the display screen 1920 and the entertainment device 1950 attached to its back are suitably fitted in the central opening bounded by the frame. section. Both display screen 1920 and entertainment device 1950 can also be secured to cover 1902 by screws, hooks, adhesive, molding, press fit, and/or other means known to those skilled in the art. A hinge 1904 at the top of the cover 1902 enables the cover 1902 to pivot away from the base 1910, thereby exposing a slot 1952 of a slot-type entertainment device 1950 for receiving a data medium 1955, such as a DVD. Hinge 1904 may be positioned on the top, side, or bottom of cover 1902, and depending on the location of hinge 1904, slot 1952 may be positioned on the top, side, or bottom of entertainment device 1950. The display screen 1920 for displaying video information is a thin panel display screen, preferably an LCD display screen. The control panel 1980 on the display screen 1920 includes control buttons 1981 for controlling display characteristics of the display screen.

Display 1920 may include input and output ports. For example, an audio/video input/output port 1982, a headphone port 1983, a power port 1984, and an infrared port 1985 for transmitting and/or receiving signals such as remote controls. It should be understood that other port types could also be provided, such as RCA jacks or USB ports for connecting game consoles or headphones. These ports may be located in any conventional location on video system 1900, such as the bottom, top, or side of video system 1900.

A speaker (not shown) for presenting audio information related to the audio program being played is mounted in the headrest 1901 or mounted to the cover 1902 , base 1910 , display 1920 or entertainment device 1950 . Alternatively, audio may be provided to vehicle occupants through the existing vehicle audio system.

To enable audio reception through the wireless headset, the display 1920 may include a wireless transmitter 1995 to enable wireless signal transmission to the wireless receiver in the wireless headset. Wireless signals may include audio radio frequency signals used in Bluetooth ^(R) , or infrared ( ^IR ) signals used in Whitefire(R). Preferably the wireless transmitter 1995 should be able to transmit wireless signals from multiple channels at different frequencies for each channel. The use of multiple channels can avoid interference between multiple wireless earphones when the user watches different programs on the display screen. The wireless signal can also be encoded to prevent interference between wireless headphones. For example, such coding can be based on spread spectrum. Wireless transmitter 1995 can include an optical transmission device (eg, LED, laser, etc.) and an antenna for wireless transmission of IR signals and RF signals, respectively.

Video system 1900 can be connected to a vehicle power source, eg 12V, through a wiring harness. The video system 1900 can also be connected to a vehicle data communication bus for data transfer to external devices. Thus, the video system 1900 is able to interface with external devices, which may include a slave video display unit installed in another headrest, a security system, and a vehicle audio system.

As shown in FIGS. 20A-20E , the lid 2002 is attached to the base 2010 by one or more hinges 2004 . The cover 2002 includes the display screen 2020 and the entertainment device formed on the opposite side thereof, which is the same as the cover 1902 and the entertainment device 1950 in the previous embodiment. Both display screen 2020 and entertainment device 2050 can be secured to cover 2002 and base 2010 can be secured to headrest 2001 by the same or similar means as previously described for headrest 1901 .

A hinge 2004 at the top of the lid 2002 enables the lid 2002 to pivot 180° away from the base 2010 to reveal the lid 2052 of a clamshell entertainment device 2050 that can be opened to insert a data medium such as a DVD into the Entertainment device 2050. If the lid 2052 can be easily manipulated and the data medium can then be inserted or removed from the entertainment device, a hinge 2004 that allows the lid 2002 to pivot more than 180° or less than 180° would need to be employed. Same as the display screen 1920 in the previous embodiment, the display screen 2020 is a thin panel display screen, preferably an LCD display screen, which includes a control panel 2080 with control buttons 2081 for controlling display characteristics of the display screen.

Similar to wireless transmitter 1995 and input/output ports 1982-1985 described above, wireless transmitter 2095 and input/output ports 2082-2085 may be located at any suitable location on cover 2002, display 2020, or base 2010. Additionally, audio may be provided to the vehicle occupants through an existing vehicle audio system or speakers installed in the head restraints 2001 . For example, the figure shows that the speaker 2057 is installed in the entertainment device 2050 . Similar to the audio system 1900 described above, the audio system 2000 can also be connected to a vehicle power source or external devices.

Additionally, controls 2056 for controlling the entertainment device 2050 may be located on the cover 2002 , the display screen 2020 and/or the entertainment device 2050 , similar to the controls 1956 .

21A-21D illustrate yet another embodiment of a video system 2100 mounted in a headrest 2101 in which an entertainment device 2150 is incorporated in the headrest 2120 along with a display screen 2120 .

As shown in FIGS. 21A-21D , the lid 2102 is connected to the base 2110 by one or more hinges 2104 . The cover 2102 includes a display screen 2120 formed on the front thereof. The display screen 2120 can be secured to the cover 2102 by means such as screws, hooks, adhesive, molding, press fit, suitably fitted into the central opening portion of the cover 2102 bounded by the frame, And/or other methods known to those skilled in the art. The base 2110 is secured to the headrest 2101 by the same or similar means as the other embodiments described above.

Hinge 2104 at the top of lid 2102 enables lid 2102 to pivot away from base 2110 to reveal clamshell-type entertainment device 2150 within base 2110 . Alternatively, a button (not shown) can also be pressed to remove the cover 2102 from the base 2110 . The cover 2152 can be opened by pulling a tab (not shown) and/or pressing a button 2153 that separates the cover 2152 from the entertainment device 2150 . The lid 2102 can be closed by reengaging the disengaged side of the lid 2102 with the base 2110 . A desired program can be played for viewing while the lid 2102 is in the closed position.

Similar to the displays 1920 and 2020 of the previous embodiments, the display 2120 is a thin panel display, preferably an LCD display, which includes a control panel 2180 with control buttons 2181 for controlling the characteristics of the display .

Similar to wireless transmitter 1995 and input/output ports 1982-1985 described above, wireless transmitter 2195 and input/output ports 2182-2185 may be located at any suitable location on cover 2102, display 2120, or base 2110. Additionally, audio may be provided to vehicle occupants through an existing vehicle audio system, or through speakers mounted in the headrest 2101 , in the entertainment unit 2150 , on the lid 2102 , on the base 2110 , or on the display screen 2120 . Like the video system 1900 described above, the video system 2100 can also be connected to a vehicle power source and external devices.

Additionally, similar to controls 1956 , controls 2156 for controlling entertainment device 2150 may be disposed on cover 2102 , display screen 2120 and/or entertainment device 2150 . For example, a control device 2156 shown in FIG. 21D is provided on the entertainment device 2150 .

When the video system is not in use, as shown in FIG. 23, the cover 2300 can hide the video system. Cover 2300 may be made of plastic, wood, leather, vinyl, fabric, and/or aluminum. Depending on the material chosen for the cover, the cover 2300 can be secured by latches, hooks, snaps, Velcro and/or zippers. Cover 2300 may include an opening for receiving a latch or the like.

Media sources 2450, 2550 may include DVD players, CD-ROM players, video game players, video cassette players (VCPs), television or radio tuners, as well as MP3 players, digital video recorders (DVRs) or downloadable, A similar device that records, stores (eg on a storage device such as a hard disk) and/or plays video and/or audio files or programs. Media sources 2450, 2550 may also include any combination of the above media sources. Referring to FIGS. 27A-27D , an entertainment system 2700 is installed in a vehicle seat 2701 , wherein a housing 2702 for a media source 2750 is incorporated into the headrest of the vehicle seat 2701 or the body of the vehicle seat 2701 . A display screen 2720 is connected to the housing 2702 . Similar to housings 2402, 2502 and media sources 2440, 2550, housing 2702 is also attached to seat 2701, and media source 2750 is mounted into housing 2702 in a manner similar to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 24 and 25. Media source 2750 may also include any of the devices listed above in relation to media sources 2450 and 2550 . Lid 2730 is connected to housing 2702 by one or more hinges 2732 as shown in FIGS. 27A-27D . The cover 2730 includes a display screen 2720 formed on the front thereof. The display screen 2720 can be secured to the cover 2730 by means such as screws, hooks, adhesive, molding, press fit, suitably fitting into the central opening portion of the cover 2730 bounded by the frame, And/or other methods known to those skilled in the art.

Hinge 2732 at the top of cover 2730 enables cover 2730 to pivot away from housing 2702 to reveal cavity 2710 within housing 2702 for receiving and supporting media source 2750 . The display screen 2720 is a thin-plate display screen, preferably an LCD display screen. The specifications of the display screen 2720 may include a TFT color liquid crystal display screen and a color TFT active matrix display screen with a diagonal length of 4-8 inches. Display 2720 may include a control panel 2740 with control buttons 2742 for controlling display features and input and output ports 2743 for devices such as external devices or headphones. It should be appreciated that such a display screen 2720 may be attached to the housing 2402, 2502 via a cover, or directly to the housing using fasteners, screws, hooks, molding, snap fit mechanisms, or the like. To enable reception of audio via a wireless headset, display screen 2720 or media source 2750 may include a wireless transmitter 2775 for transmitting wireless signals via radio frequency (RF) or infrared signals (IR) to A wireless receiver in a wireless headset. The wireless transmitter 2775 can transmit wireless signals from multiple channels with different frequencies for each channel, so that when the user watches different programs on the display screen, interference between multiple wireless earphones can be avoided.
